Ohio State Wrestling (2015/2017/2018 B1G Champs, 2015 National Champs, 2019 National Runners-up)

#3 Junior, Rocco Welsh, Makes His College Decision
Ohio State's recruiting hot streak continues with a big Pennsylvania pick-up.

Rocco Welsh, the #2 ranked wrestler at 170 lbs and #3 in the class of 2023, is headed to Columbus, Ohio to join the Buckeyes. The Waynesburg, PA native took to social media to announce his decision Wednesday afternoon.

.
Currently at 170 lbs, Welsh projects as a 174 or 184 in college. This would allow him to nicely slide into the Ohio State starting lineup after either Ethan Smith or Kaleb Romero.

Always enjoyable to see a PA kid commit to tOSU. Win-win, as tOSU gets a highly ranked recruit, and keep him away from PSU. Now, all he has to do is win multiple Nati's on the mat, and he becomes a recruiting tool for us. PS, what sort of NIL are these athletes signing? All the pub is about the football kids....Go Bucks!

Intrasquad finals tomorrow night on BTN +. Here are the matchups...

125 Malik Heinselman vs. A.J.Crews
133 Dylan Koontz vs. Andre Gonzalez
141 Dylan D'Emilio vs. Jordan Decatur (beat Echemendia 7-3 in semis)
149 Sammy Sasso vs. Klay Reeves
157 Paddy Gallagher vs. Jashon Hubbard edit..there will now be no match at 157.
165 Carson Kharchla vs. Cade Hepner
174 Ethan Smith vs. Fritz Schierl
184 Kaleb Romero vs. Rocky Jordan edit.. Kaleb Romero will not wrestle..no reason given
197 Gavin Hoffman vs. Tyler Stein
285 Tate Orndorff vs. Mike Misita

Looking with interest at 141 to see if Decatur moving up will be a good thing. Also to see Gallagher and Kharchla wrestle for 1st time as Buckeyes. I'm guessing whoever loses at 184 will challenge Hoffman at 197.

Results...
125- Heinselman made short work with an early 2nd per.tech. He should win a lot of matches this year.
133-Gonzalez won a close match against the veteran Koontz. He's fast and has good fundamentals. We'll see about his heart.
141- Decatur continued his comeback at a new wc by upsetting D'Emilio in OT. Still seems to get gassed late but hung in there.
149- Felt sorry for Reeves.
165-Carson is the real deal. Hope his leg holds up.
174- I've always liked Schierl, the guy goes balls to the wall every second of every match. But Smith just has too much talent.
184-Boring..Rocky Jordan just rode out some dude while the commentators talked about Kaleb Romero.
197- Hoffman looked improved, stronger
285- The Tater dominant against Misita.

I think we'll be better than last year, but almost certainly not title-contender good. Gotta have guys like Heinselman and Decatur finally step up and get on the podium. Curious to see Gonzalez, Koontz is a tough one to beat. And I REALLY hope Carson stays healthy because he can legit win a title this year. A little surprised Rocky didn't move up to 197 and take his chances with Hoffman, not a chance he'll beat Romero...shame Rocky never panned out, that was one that shocked me.

I think your first sentence is probably the most likely scenario although the Suriano stuff is still "out there". I read that OSU is one of 3 schools still in it and it will come down to NILdollars and cutting through red tape. Very complicated but worth the trouble I guess. Gonzalez' main weapon is his quickness. Don't know if he's ready for B10 varsity wrestling yet. Team really needs Paddy and Romero to get healthy ASAP but even then the B10 is SO tough.

Forgot about Paddy to be honest (because he didn't wrestle off), he could be huge if he lives up to the hype and is healthy. And Romero is a must, he really put it together last year and will be right near the top if healthy. And curious on Suriano, of course that would be a game changer.

Maybe the best wrestling recruiting class in NCAA history? Certainly the best in Ohio State wrestling history as Jesse Mendez has committed to the Buckeyes, giving Coach Tom Ryan the #1,#2, and #3 rated wrestlers in the 2021-22 class as well as #19. For those who don't follow as close, that's
1.Mendez
2.Bouzakis
3.Welsh
19.Shumate

edit...so excited I forgot to even mention Hwt. Nic Feldman!!
