I guess with the loss to Illinois I will pretty much follow the old saying that if you don't have anything good to say, don't say it at all. No way in the world we should have lost to Illinois...I know its the first match of the year but we looked terrible. Really the only positives in the Illinois dual are Sasso coming up with a huge fall against a highly ranked opponent and Malik really looks improved at 125, he has a sick duck under and I liked what I saw from him. Romero also looked solid but really need to see some bonus points in matches like that with the holes we have on this team. Other than that, piss poor performance.
On Wisconsin, we looked a lot better, albeit against weaker opponents. Ech looks way more active and looks able to hit the big move, but looks like he is gassed a bit after the 1st period...needs to fix that and I think he is the guy at 141. Malik had a very convincing win over a guy he lost to last year, good on him.
I had hoped it may not be this way but I think we're probably somewhere between the #6-10 team in the country this year. Enjoy the individual performances from Sasso and Romero, the rest might not be so pretty. My biggest frustration is that as a whole we continue to wrestle horribly on the mat, if we don't from our feet then we lose...that does not work at the college level. Smith looked average at best at 165, I wonder why Kharchla was not out there? Rocky looked decent in his win but I am not sure if he ever really breaks through to be a top 5 type of guy, which is disappointing because all the word was that he was head and shoulders above Bo and Micah, but that has not shown at all...its really amazing to me he can't get off the mat from bottom. But overall, if we wrestled like we did against Illinois like we did Wisconsin, we would have won.
Final note, I hope BTN never does another format like that. If we have another tri meet, just have one dual at a time, the two mat deal was confusing and difficult to watch and follow.
