Looks like they had (almost) a full house. I had no idea that many people would show up for a wrestling match.

Individual match results below and my comments. Overall a very good performance by the team in their first dual.

133 lbs | No. 20 Quinn Kinner (OSU) def. Brandon Kier (SU) | D, 7-1 Really nice win for Kinner, I like him at 133
141 lbs | No. 1 Luke Pletcher (OSU) def. No. 15 Real Woods (SU) | SV-1, 3-1 Close match but Woods is very talented...you can watch Luke get the win in OT on the Buckeye Wrestling Twitter page and its fun, he was real pumped when he got the takedown and the crowd was really into it
149 lbs | No. 5 Sammy Sasso (OSU) def. No. 19 Requir van der Merwe (SU) | D, 3-1 Close bout but glad Sammy got the win, tough opponent
157 lbs | Elijah Cleary (OSU) def. Tyler Eischens (SU) | SV-1, 10-8 Came back from a huge deficit and had 3 straight takedowns to win in OT, gutsy performance for Elijah...wondering if Hayes is going to move back up to 157 though, we need him at this weight
165 lbs | No. 8 Shane Griffith (SU) def. No. 20 Ethan Smith (OSU) | PIN, 6:15 Kharchla must be hurt, but disappointing to take the fall here
174 lbs | No. 21 Kaleb Romero (OSU) def. Foster Karmon (SU) | MD, 16-7 Really nice win for Kaleb, I hope he keeps wrestling like this
184 lbs | Zach Steiner (OSU) def. Nick Addison (SU) | D, 9-6 Looks like Steiner is the starter here
197 lbs | No. 1 Kollin Moore (OSU) def. No. 12 Nathan Traxler (SU) | MD, 19-8 Huge win for Kollin, smoked a tough opponent
285 lbs | Gary Traub (OSU) def. David Showunmi (SU) | D, 4-3 Awesome win for Traub, nice to have depth behind Singletary
125 lbs | Malik Heinselman (OSU) def. Jackson DiSario (SU) | 6-3 Glad to see Malik back on the W side

Guess we can now have beer in the Covelli, ---because we won the opener! Nice place. tOSU is spending money on some nice buildings (and updating classrooms and dorms - from my visit in June). Are all the sports facilities being paid for by the Sports budget, namely the paying sports of football, and men's and women's basketball? Seems to me that I read that somewhere, sometime. Not cash, but paying off the financing loans. Go Bucks!

We take on #15 Pitt on Friday in a dual that should be the stiffest test we have faced so far. The anticipated matchups are below. Interesting that Rocky is slated to start at 174, same for Hoffman at 184. Lots of top ranked matchups, should be a fun one.

One can never tell about wrestling, in that a lower or non-rated opponent can work into a pinning move against a higher rated opponent. Just looking at the ratings, the best matchup could/should be Chase and Demetrius at HWT. That's 'by the book'. LIke to see tOSU R-So's getting their noses into the fray. Don't see any of tOSU's vaunted freshman class matmen here. Still learning about collegiate wrestling(?) or injury (?) or just not up to snuff yet? Thanks to you guys (RB07) et al who are keeping us apprised of what's going on. End of football season and start of basketball season is putting wrestling on the back broadcast burner. Just like WBB. Oh well, we 'left coasters' will take what we can get. Any chance of a Totally Buckeye Channel coming soon? Go Bucks!

Wrestling Preview — Ohio State at Pittsburgh

No.3 Ohio State Buckeyes (1-0) vs. No. 15 Pittsburgh Panthers (1-0) Preview

The Wrestling Bucks head to the Steel City this Friday for their first road dual of the season. Pittsburgh looked impressive in their first dual against Campbell, winning 8/10 matches on their way to a 28-6 victory. Ohio State wrestled Stanford on Sunday November 10th, winning 29-6.

Probable Match Ups:

125 Pounds: No. 21 Malik Heinselman (4-3 So.) vs. Louis Newell (2-2, r-Fr)
  • Heinselman beat an unranked opponent against Stanford by a 5-3 decision. Newell lost by an 11-8 decision to an unranked opponent. I would give Heinselman an edge in this match making the team score 3-0 Ohio State.
133 Pounds: No. 18 Quinn Kinner (5-2, r-Fr) vs. Micky Phillippi (5-0, r-So)
  • Kinner defeated an unranked opponent against Stanford by a 7-0 decision. Kinner was able to keep his opponent from scoring but was ridden out the entire third period. Phillippi won by a 6-2 decision against the 12th ranked 133-pounder in the country. I would give an edge to Phillippi in this match, winning by major decision making the team score 4-3 Pittsburgh.
141 Pounds: No. 1 Luke Pletcher (6-0, Sr) vs. No. 17 Cole Matthews (4-0, r-Fr)
  • Pletcher defeated the 15th-ranked 141-pounder against Stanford by a 3-1 decision in exciting fashion. Matthews pinned the 13th-ranked 141-pounder in the country in his match. I would give the edge to Pletcher in this match due to his strength, flexibility, and superior defense. I think Pletcher will win by a decision making the team score 6-4 OSU.
149 Pounds: No. 6 Sammy Sasso (6-0, r-Fr) vs. Luke Kemerer (3-1, r-Fr)
  • Sasso beat the 19th ranked 149-pounder in the country by a 3-1 decision on Sunday. Kemerer secured a 4-0 decision against his unranked opponent. I expect Sasso to unleash his offense in this match to assist the Buckeyes with some bonus points. I think Sasso will win by a major decision making the team score 10-4 OSU.
157 Pounds: Elijah Cleary (2-2, r-Jr) vs. No. 10 Taleb Rahmani (3-2, r-Sr)
  • Cleary beat an unranked opponent in quite possibly the most exciting match of the night. Cleary was able to secure 4 straight takedowns to overcome a third period deficit and win in sudden victory by a 10-8 decision. Rahmani beat an unranked opponent by a 6-4 decision. I am very torn on this match, but I would give the slight edge to Rahmani, winning by decision. Team score 10-7 OSU.
165 Pounds: No. 21 Ethan Smith (5-2, r-So) vs. No. 15 Jake Wentzel (4-0, r-Jr)
  • Smith had a tough match against the 8th-ranked 165-pounder on Sunday. Smith lost by fall (pin) in the third period. Wentzel beat the 15th-ranked 165-pounder by a 9-1 major decision. I would give the edge to Wentzel in this match, winning by major decision. This makes the team score 11-10 Pittsburgh.

NO. 3 OHIO STATE POUNCES ON NO. 15 PITTSBURGH, 23-12 IN EARLY ROAD TEST

108955_h.jpeg

Ohio State raced out to a commanding lead, winning five of the first six matches on the road at Pittsburgh Friday afternoon. Ohio State faced an early road test against the No. 15 team in the country, and came away with a solid victory as six of Tom Ryan's ranked wrestlers took care of business in the Steel City.

Led by top-ranked captains Kollin Moore and Luke Pletcher – who both recorded major decisions – and highlighted by Slammin' Sammy Sasso's fourth pin of the season, Ohio State led the dual 20-3 after six bouts, and the meet was effectively out of reach for the home team.

Pitt didn't go down quietly, however, winning three of the final four matches by a combined score of 26-10.

WHAT WENT RIGHT
Ohio State's top dogs are legit. Moore and Pletcher took care of business, with Pletcher recording one of his most impressive wins of the young season with a 23-9 major. He orchestrated a bruising second period that included a 4-point near fall, and looked totally dominant on top throughout the match.

Pletcher may not be known for an explosive offense, but you'd never know it from watching his match versus No. 17 Cole Matthews.

Teammate Sammy Sasso, on the other hand, has now wrestled a full seven minutes just once all season. His win in #Pinzburgh was his fourth fall of the season, and he has two tech falls to his credit as well.

Chase Singletary was a welcome addition to the lineup as he returned after taking a few weeks to get back up to weight and recover from the U23 World Freestyle Championships in Budapest. He faced the No. 9 wrestler in the heavyweight class and not only won, but he rode his man the entire second period.

Malik Heinselman and Kaleb Romero each came away victorious, with Romero now a perfect 7-0 on the season at 174.

WHAT DIDN'T...
Before we get too deep in the weeds on the matches Ohio State dropped, Quinn Kinner deserves a nod. He lost a narrow decision to Micky Phillippi, one of the toughest wrestlers in the country and the No. 4 man in the class at 133... but barely three weeks after deciding to drop down to 133, he looks like he's going to be really good for the Buckeyes.

Kinner is a self-described brawler, and he took the fight to Phillippi Friday. The higher-ranked Panther just managed to stay out of danger, and wriggled into position to convert a Kinner shot into his own takedown. The match provided plenty for Ryan and staff to build on with their redshirt freshman.

On the other hand, Elijah Cleary and Gavin Hoffman looked out-horsed in their respective losses to Top-10-type opponents.

Friday was Hoffman's first day back in the lineup after doing well in open tournaments throughout the first half of the month. He didn't look quite ready for primetime at Pittsburgh, but there's little doubt the Pennsylvania native has the talent necessary to make an impact for the Buckeyes if he continues to mature and develop.

The match that got away was Ethan Smith's loss to No. 15 Jake Wentzel. Smith looked to be in command through most of the match, but gave up the go-ahead takedown late and couldn't recover. After the Stanford meet last week, Tom Ryan made a point that his team needs to work on wrestling with the same intensity the full seven minutes, and Smith's loss will be one that grinds Ryan's gears for just that reason.

@RB07OSU ....you got some explaining to do.....your boy Sasso got pinned by a Hokie from St. Paris Graham. What the hell, dude?!

Moore's a one trick pony and Sammy got caught in that one trick. Really wanted Moore in Columbus, but he was always going to land with his brother. Honestly quite disappointed in our team tonight, really piss poor effort from just about everyone except Pletcher, Smith and Moore. We need Hayes at 157 and 184 is inexplicably bad, Hoffman was supposed to be a stud this year. We better improve from here on out, because this is not close to our potential.
