Game Thread Ohio State vs UNLV, 09/23/17 @ 12:00 ET (BTN)

If this was a big-time opponent and we were utterly humiliating them by piling on, I would agree.

But this was predicted to be a blow-out, we're paying them many hundreds-of-thousands of dollars to play in what is essentially a glorified scrimmage, and our 3rd string is in. I think they'll be able to handle it.

well since this is a terrible team i think obviously running it up looks worse and is more disparaging to your opponent, but that's me. imo if the 2s and 3s wanted to be out there throwing the ball then they should be performing more in practice and proving they deserve to out there with the 1s. but i understand the skill gap between OSU 3s and UNLV 1s is still rather large..

it's a fair point, but still, i think they were plenty humiliated by halftime..

backups run the offense

the offense is a no huddle spread, you throw or pass based on what the defense gives you

no one in football puts in the backups and starts running FB dives

the offense also has plenty of huddle, stretch and iso. bubble screens etc are fine, but there's no need to be hucking 30-yd post-corners at that time.

but w/e..just my opinion.

You don't tell the QB to throw some passes if they are open but ignore the others no matter what because we don't want to embarrass the opponent

this isn't pop warner

I could give two shits about the downfield passing today. This is the only OOC game that Urban could treat like a scrimmage to work out the clusterfuck of a vertical passing game we have. UNLV was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Don't like it, then turn down the money or come in with a better team.

If this team were clicking, the passing game was crisp and we beat Okie by 20, then I think the second half plays out entirely different.

So if Ohio State is up 4 or more TDs by halftime, they should be taking knees and punting on 3rd down. Anything more would be considered classless.

I'm sure UNLV fans are outraged that Ohio State would have the audacity to attempt to see what they have in their 2nd and 3rd QBs in live game reps in front of their own fans..

Well in my opinion this was a huge wasted opportunity for the Buckeyes today. This is not a game plan that we will be executing against better teams and the fact that we threw the ball as much as we did in my opinion accomplishes nothing when it doesn't practice the tempo and the play selection that we are going to need in the future. We took our starters out Midway through the second quarter which I think is a little early.

I think we all know the reason why Dwayne Haskins isn't the starting quarterback as well because while he's shows major promise and extreme arm Talent you can tell on a few of his throws he really trust his arm a little too much right now.

I'm very disappointed in our back up defense as well with the fact that we could not control the line of scrimmage with our deep defensive line. That team should have never scored one touchdown and we let them have two subtracting the Pick 6.

Overall this should have been a game that we came away from with great confidence, great rhythm, and more importantly practiced the game plans that we are going to need to win the Big Ten.

I think the only thing we probably should have done differently all game was leave the starters in until halfway through the 3rd. The game just felt so disjointed and choppy because of the backups being in for the majority of the game. I understand that they need wraps but I am not a fan of wholesale changes that early in a game.

On the bright side JT looks strong, Dobbins looked like the player we have come to know, our receivers were awesome, our dline truly lived five yards deep into the backfield, and bottom line we were playing the ball well in the air minus Kendall Sheffield.

Speaking of which I really think there is an issue there with Kendall and perhaps we are seeing why he could not get on the field at Alabama. It is early yet and maybe he will grow into his role but right now teams are finding him and going down field because they know they'll either complete it or they'll get a pass interference

Practice time is tightly regulated by the NCAA to a set number of hours each week for every team. Thus, an additional two quarters of running plays is very important for our younger players, especially as we might need them later in the season. Check out the 10,000 hour rule.

And at the end of the day, there is no substitute for game-time experience. If Urban was trying to score points just to score points, you would have a point, but I think it was fairly evident that was not the case.

Anyways, here's to the next one.

UNLV fan can make me a fucking sandwich on their way out. They were paid $1.3M to provide a tune up game and were treated accordingly. I've seen Ohio State truly take the plunger to a team many times. This wasn't one of those games.

I am overly critical I realize that but once the backups came in Midway through the second it just felt like we let the foot off the gas and really struggle to finish the game strongly. It's a win and our starters really performed well but I think the momentum of the game really could have helped us surgeon to the next game had we finished strong.

Not upset but the game just didn't flow well with all the penalties and all the back ups

the starters practiced and refined the speed of play calling and the types of plays they wanted to work on which is clearly the "inside the box" stuff (RPO/crossing routes/etc). They did everything you could hope they would do against a bad team.

The back ups got a ton of valuable reps.

Not sure what else anyone can take away from this one.

On to next week, hope the performance of 2nd and 3rd team guys doesn't throw them off the beam too far to handle fucking Rutgers.

We need to be able to throw the ball to win the Big Ten. So I'm all for throing 40 to 45 times against UNLV and Rutgers to fix the pass game. You don't work on play selection for future games in blowouts you work on weaknesses that you need to be better at.

Also if you don't think our Dline controlled the line of scrimmage I don't know what the fuck you were watching. The Dline was in the backfield nearly every play all game long. The LB's and DB's were what let the defense down. Especially the backups.
