Game Thread Ohio State vs TCU (Arlington, TX) - 09/15/18, 8:00PM (ABC)

Can we not be intolerable hosts maybe?

No good brisket in Texas? I hate you now and do not care if you get a McNeiling. May God have mercy on your carcass because you obviously have no soul.

I’ll have to talk to others about the appropriate answers to my brisket and beer question. Because your lack of knowledge of this fundamental question is truly disturbing.

I would say the thing that TCU does well is use Patterson's schematic knowledge to contain the run. It is well documented that Patterson's teams (despite often being undersized) are usually some of the top teams against the run each year. The reason being is that he runs his 4-2-5 defense differently that just about everyone else. An interesting read on this is found here from 2015: http://grantland.com/features/hard-knocks-playing-defense-with-tcus-gary-patterson/
So what does that mean? Your coaches and players will be aware of it and will expect the running game to be tough sledding. But most fans just assume that they will be able to run the ball down TCU's throat all game and then are often frustrated when that does not happen. I also take comfort in the fact that the quality of athlete (on both sides of the ball) is much higher than in even 2014 and 2010 (arguably TCU's two best teams ever).

That said, as has been pointed out here, a lot of them are unproven. Turpin is a well known commodity, but true Sophmore Jalen Reagor may end up as one of the best WRs in the country when all is said and done (although he has not been much of a factor the first two weeks). Shawn Robinson is TCU's highest rated QB recruit, IIRC. He had offers from Bama, USC, OU, *ichigan, etc. As for the OL, hope springs eternal. TCU hired Chris Thomsen as OL coach last year and we noticed a marked improvement in the quality of OL play. The hope is that the next crop will have now been tutored by him for 2 years and will eventually be even better than the last crop. We'll see if they can hold up against OSU's DL.

Just for any of you OSU fans that may have missed -- please note this guy's use of the "*" in "*ichigan". If you are trying to ingratiate yourself here, that is a damn good way to do it. Welcome!

But while ive got you on the line discussing NFL stadiums, do you think the Bengals will make the playoffs this year? Do you think Andy Dalton will make his 4th pro bowl this year. Do you think Andy Dalton will be the best and biggest football star the state of Ohio has ever seen when his career is all said and done?

I'm going to go with "no, no, and no" on those three questions.

So is it not fair to say that TCU is built on defense to stop the passing attacks in the big 12? LBs playing DE and moving secondary players to lineback to get more speed?

I think that should help you all out when rushing the passer but it should hurt you trying to stop the run.
Not entirely. It is the same defense GP has employed at TCU since 1999. Sure, he has adapted his scheme when playing against the spread, but it is the same scheme that held Adrian Peterson to 63 yards on 22 carries in 2005, held OU to 25 yards on 36 carries in 2008; kept CJ Spiller in check for the most part and then held Doug Martin to 42 yards on 16 carries in 2009; held Jaquizz Rodgers to 75 yards and held up pretty well against Wisconsin in 2010. All of those pre-date TCU's inclusion in the Big 12 and the subsequent recruiting boost that followed. But there are other examples that create cause for concern. Baylor found success running the ball in 2014. OU throttled TCU's defense twice last year. Bryce Love had success in the Bowl game last year. So there are examples both ways, but the point is that TCU's defense is often undersized due to Patterson wanting to maximize speed on the field, but not necessarily that it is so that he can stop spread passing offenses to the detriment of facing a power running game.

More important than this ever-so-foreseeable pissing match is the brisket question. Where, close to AT&T, does one go for top notch brisket and then craft beer taproom?
Depends on where you are staying. I would recommend FW over Dallas, as Dallas is just like any other big city, but FW is still large, but with a more "Texas feel." In FW, Heim barbeque has carved out a strong following.

That's a good start, but I have a feeling @Nigel Tufnel wants to know how heavy they go on the BBQ sauce, and what kind it is.

Personally, I don't mind a lot of sauce. Others here, though, will (wrongly) want it dry if its a sweet type.

When are you going to grade the rest of my papers?

I'll have my thesis on your desk by morning.

Please correct any punctuation and spacing errors quickly so that I can get into the 8th grade.

Also why are you letting everyone else slide by with their gibberish? You have mistakenly overlooked many mistakes, now get to work I expect them all corrected by the end of lunch or you are suspended w/out pay.

On the serious side, I've noticed a trend of TCU folks thinking OSU will have trouble with the "speed" on both sides of the ball. I would enjoy nothing more than watching either JK or Weber leaving a TCU DB in the dust like Zeke did to Bama. On the defensive side, I think they'll find plenty of speed off the line with Chase, and then a couple in the back 7 can close fast. OSU will be bothered by TCU's speed about as much as that vaunted "SEC Speed!!1!11" and Oregon speed bothered them in '14.

But those teams were bad, OSU never played TCU that year so we will never know.
