Game Thread Ohio State @ Purdue - 10/20/18, 7:30PM (ABC)

Fleck would get more out of this team than UFM.
I’d rather lose to Purdue looking like a high school team than have forced celebrations for 4th downs and other hokey displays of faux unity. That dude put fucking boat oars on the helmets of a team that has nothing to do with boats. He’s a marketing department personified. Kill me if we ever force our players to all run around like they just won the super bowl with fists in the air in a choreographed douchefest.

So, I know I posted this back...I think last season or the year before in a discussion about assistants, and given that we're wondering about assistants yet again, I'll say it again. I don't understand why OSU should be (or want to be) a place where the assistant coaches are revolving doors just looking to get a stop with Urban for 2 or 3 seasons and parlay it into a HC gig. We should be able to attract and pay assistants to stay for at least a full recruiting class cycle, and frankly want it to be that way. If that's an Urban thing, I think it needs to be something Gene has a serious talk about changing the mindset of. If that isn't his "thing" but just something he's come to expect and tries to plan for, I think its time to stop it.

Clearly we've lost a lot of coaching firepower over the last few seasons and the replacements have so far proven underwhelming, if not deserving of finding their own way home from West Lafayette tonight, for some(one). Some turnover is just going to happen (Coombs, Fickell, Vrabel, all understandable and two left after decent to long stretches with the team), but expecting the top assistants to leave every two years seems...less than ideal. I know the thought is you're getting the best up and comers and at least you're getting them for two years, but I think it creates an inherent instability in the program. Kids won't ever be coached by the same people, under the same styles and philosophies for their entire time with the team, so they have to learn new schemes and styles basically every other year.

Sure, that wasn't the issue tonight, but I don't think it helps anything. Anyway, just my .02 after the embarrassment that was tonight's game.
Tell Bama that the assistant revolving door doesn't work.

Sorry for the long post ahead but I just need to vent, I'm a new member here, and the truth is I wasn't born in an American Football country, in fact I was about 14 by the time I fell in love with your (American) football. At that time there was a channel named ESPN America that played all the major American sports league games, and ncaa football and basketball games, and for some reason one day the scarlet and gray were on TV. It was love at first sight, and I can't really explain to you why, maybe it was the Block O, maybe it was the tradition, maybe it was The Vest, or maybe it was Terrelle Pryor's quarterbacking style, but ever since then I barely lost an Ohio State football game. Bare in mind that I've been through a lot of heartbreak, like the MSU B10 conference championship loss, the Penn State lost 2 years ago, both Clemson losses, but also experienced a lot of joy, like only seeing the Bucks lose to TTUN once, and obviously the Playoff games in '14, I actually pulled an all nighter just to watch the Oregon game, but man the next day it didn't event matter I was so happy I barely skipped a beat.

But with that being said I have to express just the absolute void left by both losses to Purdue and of course to Iowa. How is it that a team so freaking talented can lose both those games in that fashion, without fighting, being out coached, its just so embarrassing. I love Urban, but his nepotism is costing our program, big time. You can't have guys like Zach Smith, Bill Davis or Studrawa coaching our guys just because you've got a personal attachment to them. The WR's were trash, and you didn't even need the scandal to have an excuse to fire Smith, the LB's are pathetic, and the OL has gone from having gritty players to soft, mentally unprepared guys. How is it that we keep getting multiple top 3 recruiting classes, but for some reason that metric isn't being evidenced on the field of play. Has Urban lost his edge ? I don't know, he's been a great coach for our program, but with the amount of talent we're having on our rosters every year we've been under performing. You can't lose to MSU in '15 because you didn't want to hand the ball to one of the best RB's The Ohio State has ever seen, you can't keep Barrett in the game while getting your asses handed to you by Clemson, etc... That's why Saban is Saban, he doesn't give a f****, he'll fire you, he'll pull you out of a game, and f***ing embarrass you just to win.
I see people saying just beat TTUN, and win the Big 10, but with the amount of talent we have, its not enough, it just isn't, its always good to beat TTUN and win the conference, but we should be in the playoff every single year, we should be in the final every single year, and we aren't because of the amount of wrong and incomprehensible coaching mistakes by guys who have multi-million dollars wages.

Like I said I love Urban, and I believe that a fired up Urban, a willing Urban, an Urban Meyer with that edge, is the best coach we can ever have, but this Urban, the one that keeps shooting himself in the foot, that Urban, i'm not so sure....

Another head scratching beat down. Not a loss. A fucking beat down that is hard to even imagine how it could happen with the talent we have. Our Defense is so fucking predictable it is comical. The scheme is shit. The coaching on the defensive side of the ball is beyond shit. Fucking Withers wasn't even this fucking embarrassing I don't think. We are taking 5 stars, that would be ALL FUCKING WORLD at Bama or Clemson, schools that they turned down to come to Cbus, and our fucking defensive coaches are making them look like clowns. Bullshit.

Go get your fucking shines boxes Greg, Bill, and whoever the fuck else is condoning this bullshit defensive shit show.

Are you saying you don't like Schiano's scheme which walks two LBs into the A and B gaps only to be blocked out of the mesh thrown behind them to the WR that runs a 4.2 40?

Beck’s offense was absolute shit for an entire season. This was a game in the middle of probably the greatest passing offense we’ve ever had. Unless you’re saying Urban hiring incompetence is THE issue, there is a likelihood that there are different issues for different years.
What is Beck's offense? OSU runs Urban's offense. Just like Texas runs Herman's offense.

Urban just looks..not there.. It's weird.
This, 1000x’s this.

He seems like a mess- mentally and physically. He is so wound up and it is trickling everywhere. I’m [very much] on record of not being a fan of his sideline demeanor the last 2-3 years- the head down, the frustration and look of fear.

Tonight seemed even weirder. A lot of headset off moments. I’m not sure I can even describe it, but it wasn’t right.

I hope he gets it together- and I mean that beyond X’s and O’s.

To be clear. I don't see this team in a playoff but don't ignore the fact of winning out and beating a top 5 Michigan team and BIG Champ game that they can get in with that resume even after a shit show loss. Very unlikely

Do yourself a favor and hope we don't get a playoff spot. We're a one dimensional offense with a shaky defense. Remember 31-0? It could be worse with this team.

We can still beat scUM, win the B1G, and go to the Rose Bowl. Focus on that, because we ain't winning the CFP this season. No chance.
