Football: Dwayne Haskins has different leadership style than Trace McSorley

Ohio State redshirt sophomore quarterback Dwayne Haskins has watched Trace McSorley for years.

Haskins watched as McSorley, the quarterback at Briar Woods in Ashburn, Virginia, made four straight state championship appearances, winning three straight to start his high school career.

Haskins watched as the three-time state champion became a three-star recruit, committing to Penn State in the 2014 class. Haskins watched as McSorley blossomed on the field for the Nittany Lions, earning the starting quarterback job in 2016.

Now, in McSorley’s redshirt senior season, his final campaign as Penn State’s quarterback, Haskins will have the chance, not just to watch from the sideline, but to play against his friend as the starting quarterback at Ohio State.

“I look forward to every game, but a game like this, it makes everything that much more, you know, worth it,” Haskins said. “Me and Trace used to work out together back in high school, so just having the opportunity to go compete against him blow-for-blow, I’m excited for it.”

With his baseball swing celebrations and his salute to the stands after every touchdown, McSorley has a competitive edge to the way he plays, something Haskins said is fun to watch.

Haskins saw this competitive spirit as a high school quarterback in Potomac, Maryland, watching while he played opponents from Virginia. It was something he wanted to emulate in his own game.

“He’s a competitor, kind of like Baker [Mayfield] is,” Haskins said. “He has that type of personality, you know, competitive edge.”

However, from the moment he stepped on the field against Michigan after former Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett went down with an injury last season, Haskins defined what his leadership style would be as a quarterback.

And it was not in a similar style to McSorley.

“I always feel like that I was a good leader, but as far as speaking and like yelling and all that stuff, that never really was me,” Haskins said. “I just feel like, as a quarterback goes, the offensive line looks to you. When you get hit, you don’t want to act like you have been shaken up, they don’t want to see you be upset. I always wanted to be the even-keeled, calm, cool, collected.”

Two years ago: Bucks led by 14 going to the 4th...lost by 3.
Last year: Lions led by 15 going to the 4th...lost by 1.

It ain't over 'til it's over.
While true, keep in mind that in 2016 we dominated that game almost the entire time except when they got that blocked FG TD. Last year, we gifted them great field position several times and the special team gave up the game-opening kickoff TD. In other words, Penn State rarely, if ever, outplays us. Minimize/eliminate mistakes and execute the way we're capable of, and we win this game relatively comfortably...

I also look at who each of their opponents have beaten:

App State, only win is against Charlotte (Gardner-Webb game cancelled by hurricane?)
Pittsburgh, only wins are against FCS Albany and Georgia Tech
Kent State, only win is against FCS Howard
Illinois, only wins are against Kent State and FCS Western Illinois

So, out of six wins by Pedster opponents so far, three of them are against FCS teams, and one against a P5 team that is currently 1-2.

I guess, though, they could also look at who each of OSU's opponents have beaten:

Oregon St.: only win is against FCU Southern Utah (and they've lost to Nevada)
Rutgers: only win is against Texas St. (and they've gotten blasted by Kansas and Buffalo)
TCU: only wins are against FCS Southern and SMU
Tulane: only win is against FCS Nicholls (and they've lost to UAB)

True, but our best opponent (TCU) is markedly better than their best opponent (Pitt). I think our 54.5 ppg is a bit more impressive than their 55.5 ppg, plus we've only had one "meh" half while they've had at least two (I discount the second half of the Tulane games seeing as it was essentially Tate and the bench). We've come out and blew three of four teams into the weeds from the opening KO while the Pedsters have done so once.

The last time Ohio State lost to Penn State, they still got into the college football playoffs.
The last two times Ohio State beat Penn State, they didn't get into the college football playoffs.

Given how the Bucks performed in that playoff, I wouldn't count on getting the benefit of the doubt again. Especially now that two SEC teams getting in is acceptable.

Need to get out of Crappy Valley with a W.

I watched both games and know what went down. I just didn't feel the need to rationalize the outcomes. As for winning "relatively comfortably", that's not typically been the case in night games at their venue. While I hope it happens, I'm not going in there just expecting it. Especially after our dogfight with TCU in Jerryworld.
