Game Thread Ohio State @ Penn State - 09/29/18, 7:30PM (ABC)

Given how the Bucks performed in that playoff, I wouldn't count on getting the benefit of the doubt again. Especially now that two SEC teams getting in is acceptable.

Need to get out of Crappy Valley with a W.

Yep and the media campaign has picked up steam that even a 1 loss Notre Dame should get into the playoffs. Our margin for error is looking like it’s thin this year based on first 4 weeks.

Since the Pedsters joined the B1G:

Three of those 6 road losses happened in the 90's ('94, '97, '99). Three have happened since the turn of the century ('01, '05, '16)

And if anyone wants a good visual as to why Penn State is not a rival look at their annual win totals from this graphic.

They can only be a good 10+ win team for a couple of years here and there. Just like Wisconsin. Just like Michigan State. Etc, etc, etc.

Neither teams has gotten great (or even good) play from their LBs this year, so it seems to me that whichever unit plays better will probably win on Saturday.

Incidentally, does anyone know why kickoff is at 7:30 instead of ABC's more traditional 8:00?

AFTER WATCHING ISAIAH PRINCE'S STRUGGLES IN HAPPY VALLEY TWO YEARS AGO, THAYER MUNFORD LOOKING TO “STAY FOCUSED” AT PENN STATE

96917_h.jpg

Isaiah Prince surely has more than enough two-year-old stories to tell about his first game at Beaver Stadium.

But, Thayer Munford doesn’t need to hear them. Then a senior in high school on a trip to see Ohio State take on a tough road environment, he watched from the stands nearby while wearing a black jacket to stay warm amid thousands of white-clad Penn State fans.

“The first time I stepped in that stadium was ridiculous,” Munford said. “Everybody had on white. I was like, 'Wow, this is crazy. This stadium's crazy.'”

Munford watched as Ohio State fell apart down the stretch. He saw Prince struggle with the Nittany Lion pass-rush that racked up six sacks and 11 tackles for loss. The blown blocks, which played an integral role in his team’s 24-21 upset loss to unranked Penn State, haunted Prince for a while, and they still stick with him.

“We talked about it a little bit, but I haven't asked him a lot about it because I know this for sure, that's deep into him,” Munford said. “I was there for recruiting and I saw how he did. Like, yes, he messed up, but at the same time, he played his ass off. I'm sorry, he played his butt off. I know people hounded him for that.

“I know people did that, but at the same time, if he didn't have that situation, he wouldn't be the player like he is today.”

That might be true, but it’s what should worry Ohio State about Saturday’s game against the Nittany Lions. For the second time in three years, it must rely on a first-year starter at offensive tackle.

In 2016, Prince disappointed on a J.T. Barrett-led offense that mustered just 21 points at Penn State. Now, entering Beaver Stadium and playing in front of a crowd participating in the White Out, Munford will make just his fifth start of his young career — and first start at a raucous road venue.

Unlike Prince, who played in the pressure-packed environments of Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium at Oklahoma and Camp Randall Stadium at Wisconsin prior to the Penn State game, Munford has only started a single game at a neutral site. He has never started a true road game. Even in Arlington, Texas, a short drive from TCU’s campus, a majority of the crowd rooted for the Buckeyes.

Ohio State cannot afford him to have a repeat of Prince’s struggles in front of the vaunted crowd in Happy Valley.

“Sometimes, those linemen need a couple, three years,” offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson said. “And you look at the way Demetrius Knox has came on in a couple, three years. Sometimes, it takes a little time.”

MICHAEL JORDAN ADMITS BIG-GAME PRESSURE AFFECTED HIS SNAPS AGAINST TCU, BUT HE'S WORKING HARD TO PREPARE FOR PENN STATE

96916_h.jpg

While Ohio State’s new-look offensive line has received mostly rave reviews for its play so far this season, there was one clear low point in the Buckeyes’ third game of the season against TCU.

In the Buckeyes’ biggest game of the season to date, new starting center Michael Jordan consistently struggled with his shotgun snaps back to quarterback Dwayne Haskins, often delivering them too low, forcing Haskins to adjust and affecting the rhythm of the start of offensive plays.

Jordan’s snaps have been much more effective in Ohio State’s other games this season, including this past Saturday’s game against Tulane, but all three of those games were at home, and against defenses that were not nearly as talented as the one he faced against TCU – or the one he will face on the road at Penn State this Saturday.

Meeting with the media on Tuesday for the first time since the TCU game, Jordan acknowledged that the pressure of playing on the big stage – at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on ABC’s Saturday Night Football and against a team that was ranked in the top-15 nationally at the time – changed his mindset, and adversely affected his snaps as a result.

“I think that I just made TCU a much bigger game in my head, instead of calming myself down,” Jordan said. “I was able to calm myself down last week, get the snaps back up.”

That’s reason enough to feel uneasy going into this week’s game, as the stage will be just as big if not bigger at Penn State. Saturday night’s game is scheduled for ABC’s primetime slot again, the Nittany Lions are 4-0 and ranked ninth in both major polls and Penn State’s Beaver Stadium is considered to be one of college football’s most hostile environments for visiting teams.

Jordan is confident, though, that he will be up to the task in Happy Valley now that he will have two more weeks of experience playing center under his belt.

“By getting as much practice reps as possible so that I’m prepared,” said Jordan, who didn’t make the move from left guard to center until fall camp, in regards to how he is working to avoid making the same mistakes against TCU than he did against Penn State.

Despite Jordan’s off-target snaps, Ohio State’s offense still put up 526 yards and did not have any turnovers in its 40-28 win over TCU. Haskins didn’t allow himself to get flustered by the imperfect snaps, instead seeing it as his responsibility to adjust to the snaps and still make plays, and said his rapport with Jordan helped them work through Jordan’s struggles.

“I just tell Mike, ‘Just give me the ball, and I’ll make it work,’” Haskins said. “It doesn’t have to be perfect, I just want the ball in my hands. So I tell him every time we do it in practice, ‘The ball starts with you. Quarterback’s important, but you touch the ball every play, like how I do.’ So I mean, whenever we do warmup snaps, over there snapping against the ones or the scout team, every time you snap the ball is like a game rep.”

so were 2007, 2009, 2012 and 2014 iirc

EDIT

sorry, they claim only '05, '12 and '14 were white outs apparently

I call bullshit, every time we play those cocksuckers in HV it's at night and it's their fucking SuperBowl
Does the kickoff time affect it? I feel like the Boeckman Beatdown might have been a 330 kickoff
