Two-Minute Drill: Ryan Day “Lightning Round” Updates — Sept. 26

Ryan-Day-Press-Conference.jpg

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day spent a few minutes with reporters Thursday afternoon following his radio show. He answered questions about Saturday’s game at Nebraska and what kind of tests the Buckeyes will face in Lincoln. Day also provided a few personnel updates. Here are the highlights of everything that was said.

+ Mike Yurcich has a lot of juice and his Skull Session speech kind of came out of nowhere, but he’s got a lot of heart.

+ The defense has prepared for Adrian Martinez by facing Justin Fields over the last two months.

+ The offensive line didn’t grade out as champions because they didn’t grade out over 80% and they didn’t stay on their blocks long enough. They didn’t have a lot of reps, so the misses count for more.

+ Gunnar Hoak needs to continue taking meetings to the field. He still has his black stripe and has to continue to work on getting it removed, but he’s not been here long.

+ Jameson Williams and Garrett Wilson have had more opportunities than Chris Olave did a year ago at this time, but Day doesn’t think they are ahead of where Olave was at this time last year.

+ Being the head coach here is great, but it comes with expectations. Every place comes with its challenges, but that’s why you put a whistle around your neck.

+ The biggest enemy of road games is getting guys fired up too soon, but then you can’t also let them sit around all day. You keep them engaged, but it has to be smart.

+ The message this week has been toughness and playing harder than Nebraska.

+ The defense worked on conditioning in practice a lot this week because they are going to be on the field for more plays because they won’t be able to come off the field with Nebraska’s tempo.

+ OSU hasn’t had to make many adjustments this season, so that will be a test this week to see how they manage that. A good start is important, “but this is going to be a game for 60 minutes.”

+ Garrett Wilson made a statement that he wants to be the punt returner. He and Demario McCall will get those opportunities, but Wilson may be the main guy moving forward.

Four Game Observations:
Red Zone efficiency has been excellent. This was not the case last year. Hard to beat if we keep it up.
Balanced Offense. Nearly 50/50 pass vs rush
Spreading the wealth. A lot of players touching the ball on Offense. I can think of 12 players off the top of my head
who have scored touchdowns.
Leading the nation in sacks. You can read that again. This is with us playing a pretty vanilla Defense.
Team tackling. A significant improvement in tackling thus far. Night and Day. This will be tested against Nebraska as Martinez, Wandale, Speilman and Washington are all fast and elusive.
Giving up an average of only 1.7 yards per rush on D
Penalties. Another significant improvement. Probably what I'm most excited about. I hate penalties.
4 games no INT
Defense only allowing 8-9 points a game. Wasn't it 26 pts a game last year?
Winning the turnover margin.
No long runs against the D.
Only one really long pass against the D. Trick play.
Defensive Special Teams are playing off the charts. Another blocked kick would be sweet this week.
