Game Thread Ohio State @ Michigan State - 11/10/18, 12:00PM (FOX)

I know I know, different era, different coaches and all that.

Listen to the crowd and the energy. It's something that has been sorely lacking from this program both this year and most of last year too. It's not a surprise that sometimes the players look a little disinterested, there is literally no energy in the stadium on game days.

Sparty will be hungry for a season defining win. Ohio State needs to get physical at the point of attack and control the game. Scoring in 2 minutes is fine if you can score it every time you have the ball. 3 and outs can't happen or this will end up being a loss.

Two-Minute Drill: Mark Dantonio B1G Teleconference – 10.6.18

Mark-Dantonio.jpg

Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio took part in Tuesday’s Big Ten coaches teleconference. He provided some updates on his football team, but mostly looked ahead to Saturday’s game against the Ohio State Buckeyes. As someone from Ohio, Dantonio has a great understanding for Ohio State football and what this rivalry has meant between him and Urban Meyer. Here are the highlights.

+ Asked about RB Connor Heyward, Dantonio said he is coming into his own as a tailback. He didn’t really play much there in high school, so he continues to get better at it. He comes from a great family. He is a fast learner. He’s a great person and a great leader. He played quarterback in high school. He just has that persona about him and people gravitate toward him like they do his brother Cameron.

+ Dantonio has always told recruits not to commit if they are planning on taking other visits. If they are committed and they take visits, then they must not be that committed. When commits from other schools want to visit MSU, then he would prefer those players tell the schools that they are no longer and committed. He doesn’t like to offer official visits to players who are committed to other schools.

+ Asked who the best QB in the conference is that he has seen, he mentioned Clayton Thorson and Peyton Ramsey, and also Shea Patterson. Dwayne Haskins is a great player and they’ll see him this week. Almost every team has a great guy this year. Patterson does what he is asked to do. He dropped one right on the money against MSU to go up 14-7.

SKULL SESSION: REX RYAN TAKES SHOTS AT THE BOSAS, BRENDON WHITE NOT A STARTER YET, AND MICHIGAN STATE'S STOUT RUN DEFENSE

WE'RE ABOUT TO FIND OUT.
Ohio State could run the ball again on Saturday, but we'll know for sure if the running game is fixed with how the Bucks perform this weekend.

From Kyle Rowland of the Toledo Blade:

But it all comes with a caveat. Nebraska ranks 81st nationally in rush defense. Saturday’s opponent Michigan State is first, limiting teams to just 71.6 yards per game and 2.5 yards per carry. The Spartans have allowed seven rushing touchdowns all season.

“The mentality has to be the same,” Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said Monday when asked if OSU’s running success against Nebraska was sustainable.

Only two opponents have rushed for more than 63 yards against Michigan State — Penn State (205) and Michigan (183), who happen to be the two best teams Michigan State has played. The Buckeyes hope to fall in line and find similar results. The rest of Michigan State’s rush defense numbers read like a PowerBall ticket.
  • Utah State: 25 yards
  • Arizona State: 44 yards
  • Indiana: 29 yards
  • Central Michigan: 63 yards
  • Northwestern: 8 yards
  • Purdue: 62 yards
  • Maryland: 26 yards
I thought Nebraska was going to be the tell-all for how the rest of the season was going to go, but you can mark me down as fascinated to see how Ohio State looks against Michigan State this weekend in pretty much every aspect of the game.

This is the thing about MSU that makes us fans insane but also why Coach D is so successful. There is not much mystery about what MSU is going to do or when they will do it. They just dare you to beat their execution. Which seems like madness to me at times. Especially when it ain't working. But when it is working it is impossible to stop because you know what they are doing. No way to "adjust to stop" because you already knew what was coming. Coach D has that old school mind set and honestly when done right and with conviction it gives you 9-10 wins a season and once in awhile it will give you 11-12 wins. And that may not work at tOSU but at MSU the fans are just happy we don't suck anymore. Winning all the games you should and half the toss ups is the sign of a good program and is appreciated after many many years of being embarrassing.

I think I posted it already but if MSU and tOSU both play their "A" games OSU wins easy. But for some reason it seems OSU does not feel the need to play their "A" game this year. Maybe saving it for SCum.

I am likely taking OSU to cover in my weekly contest with some buddies. But it is really hard to pick games where both teams are so inconsistent. I would not be shocked if MSU won and I would not be shocked if OSU won by 20. I guess this is why the college game is so much fun. Well actually I would be shocked if OSU scored more than 30. MSU defense has been coming together nicely. And they seem to be peaking at the right time. Something has definitely "clicked" over the last few weeks for the Defense. The offense on the other hand has somehow gotten worse and worse each week. Or at least feels like that.
Heh.

Please.....do go on and describe this foreign concept of mysterious Tresselball and how it may not work at a place like Ohio State.

In all my years of following Ohio State Football, this is the year that I don't feel very good about. It sort of reminds me of the John Cooper years. The Talent is there (or was) but you have to remember about all the Injuries that they have sustained.
To me the Michigan ST game will be very pivotable. If we can win this game then there is hope for "THE GAME" with Scum. I guess the main reason I feel this way is because of all the distractions that we had to deal with in the beginning and the issue of Urbans health. I don't mean to compare this year with any of the Cooper years but that is what if felt back then and I am sorry if it came out that way. God only knows what disasterous years they were. Enough said...………….

That 2005 edition was such a weird game.

So maybe you guys have taken a deep pull from the trough. I mean Dantonio is literally a clone of Tressel. Did Tressel hate SCum as much as Dantonio? Because his eyes literally shoot death rays when anyone even mentions that team or coach or fan base. Like he tries to be calm but the eyes give out a seething rage that is unmistakable. What I can't figure out is how everyone (myself included) constantly doubt him and this team to only be punked. I actually expect MSU to win this weekend only because this seems to be what Dantonio does best. It is almost like he is not overly interested until the team begins to struggle or the chips are down then he puts on his magic coaching hat and wills the team to a victory.

I know this. Dantonio game plans year around for tOSU and SCum. This has been discussed often at MSU. He usually picks a 3rd team to breakdown in depth every Summer. But those other 2 teams are always on the list.

Dude had police dogs search their bus before they were allowed to get off once.

Another story is that Tress got pissed at Barton after the 06 1 vs 2 game for having a victory cigar. I've heard it from somebody that was in that locker room....Tressel wasn't the least bit upset at that. Were it not Michigan....I can believe he would've been.

C'mon now. I like the cut of Dantonio's Michigan-hating jib, solid success in putting them down, and appreciate his contributions to OSU's 2002 national championship. But Jim Tressel has a 10 year track record of successfully and thoroughly embitchening Michigan, so let's not hear talk of angry facial expressions.

However, according to Mark Dantonio, Lewerke is still his starting quarterback.

“I think you can go with that. That’s the foundation that he’s built here,” said Dantonio. “I didn’t see any velocity according relative to his arm strength.....if he was hurt, he would not be playing.”

Lewerke is the more experienced quarterback but has clearly been riddled with injuries for the past few weeks. In his last two starts he is 16-45 with 153 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He hasn’t looked like the same guy for much of this year, yet they keep electing to go with him over Rocky Lombardi.

“As I said after the football game, though, not afraid to use Rocky,” said Dantonio. “I think he made a big statement against Purdue in that football game, and I look at him as an ace reliever.”

I can only say that Dantonio is either drunk, lying, or stupid. I mean no one could have watched Lewerke the last 4 weeks and say that kids arm is sound. OK so velocity is still good. But it is a scatter gun now.
