I feel almost opposite.

I fear a stubborn attachment to the run when it's completely ineffective (like 5 straight run calls to start the game against Nebraska that resulted in exactly dick)

The thing the offense does is pass well and that includes short passes, slants and screens. The biggest weakness is running.

MSU defensive strength is stopping the run. MSU defensive weakness is short passing game.

IMO, if the once in a lifetime passing talent hands it off 20+ times, for 2 something ypc, they will lose.

I fear the fools gold of some limited running success against Nebraska is going to lead to OSU trying to replay the 2015 MSU game and run it too much.
The day Ohio State is afraid to run the ball against anyone is the day they stop being who they are.

MSU has the top rushing defense in the Solar System? So fucking what. Cram that fucker down their throats. We aren't Eastern Michigan or whoever else they padded that stat against.

Fuck them.

Speaking of series history, since the infamous 16-13 loss in 1974, the Bucks are 13-2 in East Lansing.

Ruin Championship-Caliber Buckeye Seasons? Spartans Will

Here’s a run through the five shocking Spartan upsets which ruined perfect OSU seasons.

1974
Before J.T. Barrett was part of a contentious spot in a big game between border rivals, it was Champ Henson.

The 1974 Buckeyes were ranked No. 1 in the country with an 8-0 record coming into their November 9 game in East Lansing.

Michigan State came in just 4-3-1, again having lost back-to-back-to-back games in humiliating fashion earlier in the year. This time it was UCLA, Notre Dame, and Michigan combining for a 96-35 drubbing.

Unlike two years earlier, the Buckeyes played well enough to win in this case. They were up 13-3 with less than 10 minutes left in the game before Michigan State roared back.

The Spartans scored a 44-yard passing touchdown with 5:30 left to cut the Buckeyes’ lead to 13-9.

Then, with 3:17 to play, MSU fullback Levi Jackson raced 88 yards off right tackle for a go-ahead touchdown. Just like that, the top-ranked Buckeyes were down 16-13.

But OSU had one last chance. They drove down inside the MSU 10 in the final minute. Fullback Champ Henson appeared to possibly score the winning touchdown with 29 seconds left, but the officials ruled he was down at the 1.

On the next play, they tried to ram it in from the 1, but were stonewalled.

Then, as MSU players held Buckeyes down to keep them from running another play, precious seconds ticked off the clock.

According to the official game report,

“The Buckeyes attempted to line up, as the final seconds ticked off, and did get a play started. The ball squirted between quarterback Cornelius Greene’s legs, was picked up by wingback Brian Baschnagel and carried well into the end zone.”

However, the officials ruled that the clock had run out before the snap. It took 46 minutes before Big Ten commissioner Wayne Duke, who was at the game, made the ruling official.

It was the only regular season loss for the Buckeyes that year. Just like two years earlier, they went to the Rose Bowl and lost to USC.

You can watch the final moments of the 1974 game below.

So we can't be a passing team for one season bc Archie won a couple Heismans 40 some years ago? Stubbornness for Stubbornness' sake is dumb. We may not be Eastern Michigan, but we just lost to a team that they beat mostly bc we can't run the ball for shit.

Cold and windy forecast could be a problem for a passing team, which we are this year whether we like it or not. Our defense seems to need at least 30 from the offense, and that could be difficult this week.

Obviously, JCOSU's perspective isn't based only on the fact that Griffin won two Heisman trophies, but on the fact (or perception) that inside power rushing is a long-term, consistent part of OSU's football identity. But I agree with you that OSU shouldn't try to force a nonfunctional running game against MSU solely in order to match that historical identity.

And if the most important thing this weekend is just to beat this weekend's opponent, passing 50 times against MSU might make sense. But I think we've gotten to the point where a glorious season isn't plausible, because this is not a great team and isn't likely to become one in the next month. And so success or failure right now hinges primarily on beating Michigan. For that reason, I'd like to see OSU make a strong, even stubborn, effort to run the ball against an above-average defense in MSU, and hopefully improve their ability to do so. Because I'm skeptical that throwing the ball 50 times, with no consistent running game, will be enough to win in the one game that truly matters now.

Stated differently, the big goals now seem vanishingly unlikely. Therefore, the team should be primarily preparing to beat Michigan, even to the detriment of most easily winning the intervening games.

Now that the MSU fan has liked this post, I feel obliged to retract it.
