Game Thread Ohio State @ Michigan State - 11/10/18, 12:00PM (FOX)

I damn near puke in my mouth at just the mention of the "M" word.

Hard to stomach how much everyone has been talking about them the last month. Tired of hearing about the "Revenge Tour". I think it's almost better for OSU though TBH. Been on the other side plenty of times when OSU was the better team and was expected to win and didn't.

If they can find a way to get to "The Game" at 10-1, with ttun being favored, and a lot to play for still, I give them a fighter's chance. I have come to grips that they aren't going to put a "complete game" together this week or the rest of the season. Too many glaring weaknesses and holes to be patched. At this point..... screw the beauty contest; just find a way to win football games the next 3 weeks.

We can do it with just a few things...

1. Continue a better balance on offense
2. Stop turning the ball over
3. Play our best players on defense

I'm really excited to see White really grab that starting spot. He's the bigger body/sure tackler I've really been hoping for.

Football: Ohio State brings run momentum to Michigan State’s No. 1 rush defense

IMG_7987-20vwkra-530x353.jpg

Week after week, Ohio State’s run game could not get it going for the offense.

Redshirt sophomore quarterback Dwayne Haskins threw for 400 yards or more in three straight games, while sophomore and redshirt junior running backs J.K. Dobbins and Mike Weber, respectively, failed to produce 100 yards in either of the past two contests.

But after a 36-31 victory against Nebraska, the rush offense is starting to turn a corner.

Dobbins and Weber combined for 254 rushing yards on 32 carries, with Dobbins finding his way to the end zone three times in a game that was much closer than expected.

Nebraska’s rush defense was ranked No. 79 in the country, and the Buckeyes exploited it. Now, Ohio State takes that much-needed momentum on the ground to East Lansing, Michigan, to take on Michigan State.

The Spartans allow 71.7 rushing yards per game, the fewest in the NCAA. Their 2.53 yards per rush allowed is No. 3 in the country, and the seven rushing touchdowns allowed is tied for No. 8.

Head coach Urban Meyer is well aware of the difficult matchup his run game is about to face, saying it “has to be” sustainable moving forward.

“That’s what we’re working on right now. Obviously you’re facing the No. 1 rush defense in the country coming up this next week,” Meyer said. “A lot of what you see schematically will change because [it’s] a completely different defense … But the mentality has to be the same.”

This season, Ohio State ranks No. 55 with 178.1 rushing yards per game on 4.52 yards per carry.

That improved on Saturday, with Dobbins and Weber running for more than seven yards per carry, including Weber going for 10.1 yards per rush on nine carries against the Cornhuskers.

Even with Weber’s high totals, it was Dobbins who earned the majority of the carries — 23 for 163 yards — including on the final drives to seal the victory for Ohio State.

Meyer said after the game it had to do with Dobbins’ ball security, with Weber fumbling twice against Nebraska.

On Monday, Meyer said he does not expect to make changes on the rotation of the two backs, allowing his coordinators to make that adjustment if it is needed.

“I’ve been OK with it. I don’t micromanage that too much, but if I have to, I’ll get involved in that,” Meyer said. “I think a fresh back that goes a good series and then the next guy gets the next series. And obviously near the end J.K. got a couple of extra series just [because] he was so tight with the football, we have to make sure Mike takes care of the ball.”

To win this game OSU MUST establish the run. If Haskins throws it 50 times, they lose.

I feel almost opposite.

I fear a stubborn attachment to the run when it's completely ineffective (like 5 straight run calls to start the game against Nebraska that resulted in exactly dick)

The thing the offense does is pass well and that includes short passes, slants and screens. The biggest weakness is running.

MSU defensive strength is stopping the run. MSU defensive weakness is short passing game.

IMO, if the once in a lifetime passing talent hands it off 20+ times, for 2 something ypc, they will lose.

I fear the fools gold of some limited running success against Nebraska is going to lead to OSU trying to replay the 2015 MSU game and run it too much.

I agree with this. MSU is #98 nationally against the pass and #1 nationally against the run. We're idiots if we think this o-line is going to go up to East Lansing and push people around.

I can only say that Dantonio is either drunk, lying, or stupid. I mean no one could have watched Lewerke the last 4 weeks and say that kids arm is sound. OK so velocity is still good. But it is a scatter gun now.
Well good news....I've got just the cure for terrible QB play.

Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaave you met Bill Davis?

This is my fear as well. I’d love for them to be able to run the ball against MSU, as it would be a huge relief, but relying on something over and over again that isn’t working could be a nail in the coffin.

Open up the short passing game, establish an early lead and then try to get the backs involved. If it isn’t working? It should be the Haskins and WR show.

And please, no reverses for huge losses. This D plays sound/fundamental football. No wildcat trickery drive killers, either. Let the young gunner sling it like we know he can. That’s the best hope against this D. If the running game happens to work along side it, even better.

To add to the ‘revenge tour’ Chase Winovich has a punchable face/attitude and also fuck that whole state.
