Ohio State Men's Tennis (2014/2019/2024 ITA Indoor National Champs, 17 Straight B1G Titles)

Okay I must be losing my mind, I wrongly stated that the ITA website indicated new rankings to be released this week would include Team, singles and doubles. The site now lists Feb. 14 for team, singles and doubles rankings to be released.
Today only the Team rankings were released.
There was no movement in the rankings of teams 1-20, tOSU stayed at a strong 4 position. It is way early to talk about the end of the year tournament seeding scenario but top 4 is what Buckeyes want to maintain.
BIG 10 teams made some noise this past week and it is reflected in this weeks ITA rankings

Illinois held strong at #16, (w/ upset of #14 Duke, loss to #3 Tennessee)

TSUN moves up 1 to #22,

Minnesota is up 3 to #27.

Wisconsin stayed at #39.

MSU, unranked previously, entered the rankings at #56 after a major upset of former #21 Wake Forest.

Northwestern and Iowa both lost some ground but held on to the top 75 at #70 and #74 respectfully.

Also, LSU who will be the 3rd SEC team to travel to Columbus for a 2/12 match, moved up in the rankings from #46 to #33.

Chase Buchanan was voted the Big Ten's tennis athlete of the week award for his victories over highly ranked competition in single's and double's.
I foresee this honor becoming one of those awards (like the Sullinger/Big 10 Basketball Freshman of the week), renamed the Buchanan/Big 10 tennis athlete of the Week award. :wink2:
Congratulations Chase!

Ohio State's Chase Buchanan earned his seventh-career Big Ten men's tennis athlete of the week award and his first of 2011 after leading the fourth-ranked Buckeyes to wins against No. 18 Mississippi and No. 11 Georgia this past weekend. The New Albany, Ohio, native and 2010 Big Ten Athlete of the Year has won three matches against ranked opponents in singles action this season.
Buchanan, ranked 63rd, picked up a 7-6, 6-3 win over No. 32 Marcel Thiemann at No. 1 en route to a 6-1 Buckeye win Friday over the Rebels. Buchanan and Blaz Rola, the sixth-ranked doubles pair in the nation, teamed to defeat Tucker Vorster and Jonas Lutjen of Mississippi, 8-6, at No. 2 doubles.
Against Georgia at No. 1 doubles, Buchanan and Rola handed Javier Garrapiz and Hernus Pieters, the 14th-ranked pair in the country, an 8-6 loss. The junior then earned his second singles win of the weekend, downing 13th-ranked Garrapiz, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 2 in Ohio State's 6-1 win Sunday.
The No. 4 Ohio State men's tennis team will try to continue its undefeated start to the season this weekend as it hosts No. 46 LSU at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Varsity Indoor Tennis Center. It is the third-consecutive match the Buckeyes (7-0, 0-0) will face a team hailing from the Southeastern Conference. Admission is free.

Go Bucks!

Go Bucks!
I wonder how they selected Chase over Rola but that's okay with me:) because when the ITA individual rankings come out February 14 Chase will probably make the biggest leap of almost every player in the country.:osu:

Litl, I think the edge for the award goes to Chase because Buchanan's opponents were ranked a bit higher that Rola's, at least in the eyes of the BTen award givers, that is probably what they considered.
Ole Miss Thieman and UGa Garrapiz were #32 and #13 respectfully, and even though Spencer just won the SEC indoors, he didn't have the ranking yet.
Good problem to have but Rola will be seeing the Big 10 athlete of the week title many times this year.
The Official OSU tennis site announced the team captains for this year:
Seniors Matt Allare, Balazs Novak, and Shuhei Uzawa.
The article on the upcoming LSU match, the 3rd of 3 SEC teams to come to OSU Varsity Indoor Tennis Center also includes a paragraph about the next victory for Ty Tucker--it will be a milestone.
OSU official Tennis site.

The No. 4 Ohio State men's tennis team will try to remain undefeated when it hosts No. 33 LSU at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Varsity Indoor Tennis Center. On the season, the meeting will serve as the third-consecutive match the Buckeyes (7-0, 0-0) will face a team hailing from the Southeastern Conference. With all seven victories occurring in Columbus so far, Ohio State enters the match vs. the Tigers on a 117 consecutive home match win streak. The LSU dual is the last home match for Ohio State before it embarks on its first road contest of the season at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at North Carolina.
A Look Back
The Scarlet and Gray moved to 7-0 on the year with two wins this past weekend against Top 20 teams. Ohio State defeated No. 18 Mississippi, 6-1, on Feb. 4 to move to 3-2 all-time vs. the Rebels. The Buckeyes also handed No. 11 Georgia its first loss of the season Feb. 6 with a 6-1 victory. Ohio State improved to 3-10 vs. the Bulldogs all-time. With both wins, the Buckeyes have now defeated four teams ranked in the ITA standings. The other two victories took place during the ITA Kick-Off Weekend when Ohio State shut out No. 75 William & Mary, as well as No. 56 UC Irvine in the championship qualifier.
A Look at LSU
The Tigers travel to Columbus with a 3-2 overall record following a doubleheader sweep at home Tuesday. The Tigers downed UL-Lafayette, 6-1, and shut out New Orleans, 7-0, to push their winning streak to three matches. No. 26 Rice also fell victim to the Purple and Yellow last Sunday, 5-2. LSU's only two losses came in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend event hosted by Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas. The Tigers fell to the No. 15 Red Raiders, 4-0, in the first round before losing to Auburn, 4-1, in the consolation match.
The Rebels are coached by Jeff Brown, who is in his 12th season in Baton Rouge and has guided his teams to a 192-90 mark.
Buckeyes vs. Tigers
Ohio State is 6-5 all-time vs. LSU, winning the previous five meetings. Last season, the No. 3 Buckeyes traveled to Dub Robinson Stadium in Baton Rouge and came away with a 4-2 victory as Balazs Novak and Matt Allare led Ohio State in singles. Current assistant coach Justin Kronauge also came away with a 6-4, 6-1 win.
Buckeyes vs. SEC
Ohio State is now 40-58-1 vs. schools from the Southeastern Conference and 22-29 against SEC programs on the 2011 schedule after defeating Ole Miss and Georgia this past weekend. The Buckeyes improved to 3-2 vs. the Rebels and 3-10 vs. the Bulldogs. The Scarlet and Gray have one remaining match vs. an SEC opponent after LSU when they play at Kentucky at 3 p.m. April 6. Ohio State is 10-12 all-time against Kentucky. The Buckeyes also are 5-2 vs. Alabama, 3-0 vs. Arkansas, 1-2 vs. Auburn, 1-3 vs. Florida, 0-1 vs. Mississippi State, 1-4 vs. South Carolina, 3-8 vs. Tennessee and 4-7-1 vs. Vanderbilt.
Allare, Novak, Uzawa Named 2011 Team Captains
Senior Matt Allare, Balazs Novak and Shuhei Uzawa, were named 2011 team captains head coach Ty Tucker announced. . .
Tucker One Victory From 300
Head coach Ty Tucker has 299 career victories entering the match vs. the 33rd-ranked Tigers. His overall career mark as the Buckeye leader stands at 299-51. Tucker will become only the second coach in Buckeye men's tennis history to amass 300 wins. Tucker's head coach while playing at Ohio State, John Daly, currently has the most victories all-time as coach of the Buckeyes. Daly, who Tucker succeeded, was a combined 427-331 in his 28 years of coaching. Tucker's current .854 active winning percentage is the highest in Ohio State history.
Since his inaugural season in 1999-00, Tucker has guided Ohio State to five regular-season Big Ten Conference titles and six league tournament championships, including five-consecutive from 2006-10. Tucker's teams have never finished below fourth in the conference regular-season standings. In fact, after tying for fourth in 2000, Tucker and the Buckeyes finished second from 2001-2005 before winning the conference the last five seasons. Since that 2000 campaign, the Scarlet and Gray has won at least 20 matches each season and at least 30 the past three seasons.
Five Stay Streaking
Five Buckeyes are entering the weekend boasting at least six-match win streaks. Redshirt-freshman Nelson Vick leads all Buckeyes with a current nine-match win streak on the season for an overall mark of 13-3.
Junior Chase Buchanan and senior Balazs Novak each carry streaks of seven in a row. Buchanan impressively defeated No. 32 Marcel Thiemann of Ole Miss 7-6, 6-3 and Georgia's No. 13 Javier Garrapiz 6-3, 6-3 this past weekend to help keep his streak alive and move to 12-3 overall and 7-0 in dual single action. Novak's mark of seven-straight wins pushes his season record to 11-2 and 5-0 when playing at No. 4.
Freshman Blaz Rola and redshirt-sophomore Devin McCarthy, each have win streaks of six matches heading into the contest vs. LSU. Rola is 19-2 overall and McCarthy stands at 11-2.
Dominant in Columbus
The Buckeyes have won a school-record 117-consecutive home matches dating back to the 2002-03 season. They have won the first seven matches to begin this season at the Varsity Indoor Tennis Center; three coming against ranked teams. In the Big Ten, no other team in any sport has won as many consecutive contests at home than the Buckeyes. Ohio State was victorious in all 21 home matches last season, marking the seventh-consecutive year the team achieved perfection in Columbus. The home win streak began April 6, 2003 with a 5-2 triumph over Purdue. . .
Up Next
The Buckeyes will make their first road trip of the season Feb. 15 when they travel to No. 20 North Carolina. The Tar Heels currently are 2-1 on the year with their only loss coming to No. 11 Georgia during the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The match will begin at 2:30 p.m. from Chapel Hill.

The Rebels are coached by Jeff Brown, who is in his 12th season in Baton Rouge
 I don't think this would make our Tiger fans very happy.

With regard to Buchanan winning the Big Ten POW I thought about who he and Rola played this past weekend... perhaps Rola's win over Spencer would carry more weight but as you say this time to win the award is just a matter of time:io:

Lots of energy at the OSU Varsity Tennis Center last night powered the Buckeye's to a perfect 7-0 finish over the 3rd SEC opponent LSU.
With the victory Coach Ty Tucker hit the 300 win mark.
Recap from the OSU official Tennis Site.

The fourth-ranked Ohio State men's tennis team defeated its third-consecutive opponent from the SEC Saturday as it shut out No. 33 LSU,7-0. With the win, the Buckeyes extended their home win streak to 118 straight matches. The victory for the Scarlet and Gray (8-0, 0-0) also was the fourth in a row against a ranked opponent and sixth shutout in eight matches so far on the year.
The win against the Tigers (3-3, 0-0) served as head coach Ty Tucker's 300th career victory. His overall career mark as the Buckeye leader now stands at 300-51. Tucker is now the second coach in Buckeye men's tennis history to amass 300 wins. Tucker's predecessor, John Daly was 427-333 in 28 seasons from 1972-1999. Tucker has averaged 26.5 wins in 11 seasons and his current .854 active winning percentage is the highest in Ohio State history.
"Coach Tucker is a hard worker and puts in the hours", Matt Allare, senior co-captain, said, "He knows what he is doing and is a proven winner and in my four years, he has helped me become a better player.". . .

The Buckeyes got off to a quick start in doubles action against the Tigers. Senior co-captain Balazs Novak and Devin McCarthy, the 23rd-ranked duo in the nation, impressively defeated Roger Anderson and Oliver Borsos, 8-2, to move to 12-3 on the season. The sixth-ranked team in the nation, consisting of junior Chase Buchanan and freshman Blaz Rola, also easily won their match. The Buckeye tandem improved to 11-3 with an 8-2 win over Julien Gauthier and Tom Knights.
Also competing in doubles play, Ohio State's Allare and Peter Kobelt fell to the 27th-ranked team in the nation, Neal Skupski and Sebastian Carlsson, 9-8(3).
Allare was the first Buckeye to finish singles play, downing Sebastian Carlsson in straight-sets 6-3, 6-3. Rola picked up the third point for Ohio State, handing Borsos a 6-2, 6-4 loss at No. 1. Borsos held a 4-1 advantage in the second-set, but Rola rolled off the next five points to pick up the win and improve to 20-2 in singles action.
Buchanan captured the match-winning point in straight-set fashion, by beating Skupski 6-4, 6-2.
In other singles action, freshman Ille Van Engelen reeled off a 6-4, 6-2 victory over LSU's Mark Bowtell, while Novak was victorious over Gauthier 6-4, 6-4.
Redshirt-freshman Nelson Vick clinched the shutout for Ohio State, defeating Knights 7-6, 4-6, 10-4 to extend his win streak to 10 matches.
Up next, the Buckeyes will make their first road trip of the season Feb. 15 when they travel to No. 19 North Carolina. The match will begin at 2:30 p.m. from Chapel Hill.

No. 4 Buckeyes Set to Visit No. 19 North Carolina
The No. 4 Ohio State men's tennis team will try to remain undefeated when it travels to No. 19 North Carolina at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in Chapel Hill. The match will serve as the fourth-consecutive match the Buckeyes (8-0, 0-0) will face a team ranked in the ITA standings. With all eight victories occurring in Columbus so far, Ohio State enters its first road contest vs. the Tar Heels with 47-straight regular season road wins.

Last Time Out
The Scarlet and Gray moved to 8-0 on the year with a 7-0 shutout over No. 33 LSU Feb. 12. Ohio State improved to 7-5 all-time vs. the Tigers. With the win, the Buckeyes have now defeated five teams ranked in the ITA standings. They previously had downed two other SEC foes, beating both No. 18 Mississippi and No. 11 Georgia by a 6-1 score. The other two victories took place during the ITA Kick-Off Weekend when Ohio State shut out No. 75 William & Mary, as well as No. 56 UC Irvine in the championship qualifier. The Buckeyes have amassed six shutouts so far on the season.
A Look at UNC
The Tar Heels enter the match Tuesday with a 3-2 overall record following a 7-0 shutout loss at No. 28 Auburn Feb. 23. North Carolina previously shut out both Charlotte and Navy, 7-0, and dealt No. 21 Georgia Tech a close 4-3 loss. Both UNC losses were against ranked opponents on the road. In addition to the Auburn loss, the Tar Heels were defeated by the No. 11 Georgia Bulldogs, 4-1, in Athens Jan. 30. . . .

Streaking Buckeyes
Five Buckeyes are entering the contest Tuesday boasting at least six-match win streaks. Redshirt-freshman Nelson Vick leads all Buckeyes with a current 10-match win streak on the season for an overall mark of 14-3. Vick defeated LSU's Tom Knights 7-6, 4-6, 10-4 Feb. 12.

Freshman Blaz Rola has nabbed a win in seven straight contests while redshirt-sophomore Devin McCarthy has a win streak of six matches heading into the contest vs. UNC. Rola is 20-2 overall and McCarthy stands at 11-2. . . .

Up Next
The Buckeyes will travel to Seattle, Wash., this weekend to compete in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship. Ohio State will be one of 16 teams that earned the right to compete after winning one of the national qualifiers. The Buckeyes hosted their qualifier, shutting out No. 75 William & Mary in the opener and No. 56 UC Irvine in the championship qualifier to earn the right to travel to Seattle.

Doubles point goes to Ohio State
Allare/Kobelt win 8-5
Buchanan/Rola win 8-4
McCarthys/Novak lose 8-6

Singles matches currently going on. Interesting to note that Engelen is playing #3 singles and that Kobelt this play #5 singles rather than McCarthy. I also find it interesting that while Buchanan is ranked lower nationally than Rola that he still plays #1 singles while Rola plays #2 singles. The singles matches are fairly even but it is very early in the matches.:oh:

When play began MacCarthy played the singles match rather than Kobelt
