Ohio State Men's Tennis (2014/2019/2024 ITA Indoor National Champs, 17 Straight B1G Titles)

link
UConn puts a 76-game home-court winning streak -- the longest in Division I since 1981 -- on the line Tuesday night against Seton Hall.
Link
UConn has now won 64 straight conference games and 77 consecutive contests at home.

FWIW, Nothing against the UConn women's basketball team, because 77 straight home victories and 64 straight conference wins is remarkable and not just according to the Espn analysts,
To put it in perspective with the accomplishments of the OSU men's tennis program, today the Buckeyes put their 118 home-court winning streak on the line.
On March 4, OSU will travel to Penn State where they will put their 66 game Big Ten Conference consecutive win streak on the line.
Today Cleveland State at noon, Wright State at 5pm, can be monitored on line through Livestats.

Go Bucks.

OSU vs. Cleveland State just went final with Buckeeyes prevailing by a 7-0 final.
Most scores were lopsided, 6-0, 6-1, etc.
Next up Wright State tonight at 5 pm.
The same thing will happen with Wright State. Ohio State just should have played against each other and they would have gotten better practice. Know a kid who plays on the Wright State team and Peter could wax him in singles.

Chase Buchanan, Blaz Rola, and also Balasz Novak sat out vs. Wright State this evening. the Buckeyes still prevailed as younger players and some veterans that have not seen as much action yet this year took the court.
The final was 6-1 as the bucks swept the doubles point, led by Kobelt and Allare at #1, McCarthy & Uzawa at #2, and Van Englelen and Williams at #3.
As is customary Matt Allare was first off the court @ #2 singles with a 6-2,6-1 win. Wyatt Lippert received a rare start at #6 singles and did not disappoint his team with a convincing 6-2, 6-0 victory.
Redshirt Freshman Nelson Vick sealed the win for OSU at #3 singles with a 6-0, 6-1, and Peter Kobelt and Ilie VanEngelen were victorious at #4 and #1 respectively. Dropping his match at #5 was senior Shuhei Uzawa in a 3rd set tie breaker.
Next up for the Buckeyes is a strong #15 ranked Louisville Cardinal squad, Sunday at noon at the Varsity Tennis Center.

Louisville ranked #15 in the NCAA, will be traveling to Columbus for a major nonconference showdown with tOSU Sunday at noon. The Buckeyes will be seeking to extend their 120 consecutive home win mark. Louisville on the other hand will be trying to snap a 4 game losing skid, including losses to #2 Tennessee, #5 UCLA, #9 Georgia, and #8 USC. The last 3 losses were administered at the ITA Indoor Championships at Washington. OSU is 8-1 all time vs. Louisville.
When the Cardinals come to Cbus they will bring one of the best single's players in the NCAA, Austin Childs, ranked #11 by ITA.
Austin's brother Simon Childs will play at #3, Macsimuk, a top 100 player will probably fill the 2 hole.
A key for the Buckeyes Sunday will be to find an answer at the double's position. During the ITA Indoors Championship they lost the double's point in each of 3 matches. They recovered to win the first two rounds but against Virginia faltered.

The OSU vs. Louisville starts at Noon, Fans can monitor online at LIVESTATS
Speaking of the ITA, the all tournament team was announced recently and two Buckeyes received honors as they were selected first team all-ITA:

2011 ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championships All-Tournament Team

No. 1 - Michael Shabaz, Virginia
No. 2 - Alex Domijan, Virginia
No. 3 - Sanam Singh, Virginia
No. 4 - Jarmere Jenkins, Virginia
No. 5 - Devin McCarthy, Ohio State
No. 6 - Balasz Novak, Ohio State

Doubles
No. 1 - Boris Conkic/J.P. Smith, Tennessee
No. 2 - Kellen Damico/David Holiner, Texas
No. 3 - Drew Courtney/Steven Rooda, Virginia

Congratulations Devin and Balasz!

pardon my ignorance, but I thought Chase Buchanan was a freshman all-american, and destined for big things. I see two Buckeyes in single digits in singles, and that's a great thing, plus OSU is ranked #3! Hope we get a rematch against USC.....

Did something happen to Chase (injury?) that has caused him to regress/progress more slowly? Saw him on Big10 network against Illinois in the B10 finals, and he was driving his opponent against the backstop on every shot. very powerful...anyway, here's to a great season, and helping me clear away the fog.

Chase was the #1 American recruit in the class of 2009.
He enrolled at OSU early and played in the Spring of '09, and as a 17 year old played well (11-4) dual record, Chase also won the US Junior tournament in summer of 2009, with an automatic invitation to the US Open.
Buchanan's big improvement came last year, Sophomore season. He won the #1 single's spot for the Buckeyes, going 31-6 overall, and was named Big Ten MVP.
He advanced to the 3rd round of the NCAA single's championship, falling short of the All American status given to the top 16 finishers.
Here is Chase Buchanan's bio from the official Tennis site. Buchanan Bio

 I will be shocked if PSU wins 2 matches out of the seven. The only competition in the Big Ten for Ohio State will be Illinois and sCum. One of those schools might win three matches out of the seven but I doubt that. Either one of those two will be lucky to win 2 matches.

In reference to the major road run, Buckeyes next 7 matches will be on the road. Kind of a March madness 2.

Agreed that we probably should not expect much from the #69 Nits, but following the Happy Valley road trip the bucks will travel in March to;
#14 Texas A & M,
#21 Pepperdine,
Iowa,
#7 Illinois,
#67 Northwestern, and
#13 Kentucky.

bold will be major road contests.
The next home match isn't till April 8. :(

Tomorrow the ITA will release their weekly rankings. The schedule indicates that all three of the new team, single's and double's rankings will be announced.

The most recent ITA team rankings have been released and a shakeup of seismic proportions has occurred! Three Big Ten Teams are now ranked in the top 10 of the NCAA!
Remaining at the #3 spot is tOSU.
Improving from #7 to #4 are the Illini, and TSUN after a win over Duke making the largest jump from #23 to #8 in the March 1 Team Rankings.
Pretty confident this is not a first, but I can't remember the Big Ten ever having 3 teams in the top ten of the ITA rankings.

Buckeye single's players in the ITA Single's rankings include:
Blaz Rola at #4.
Chase Buchanan at #14.
Matt Allare at #39.
Devin McCarthy at #46.
Peter Kobelt at #63.
Balazs Novak at #76.
Nelson Vick at #95. and
Ilie Van englen at #112.

In the ITA Double's rankings:
Blaz Rola and Chase Buchanan were #8
Matt Allare and Peter Kobelt #12.
and Balazs Novak and Devin McCarthy held on at #75.

The No. 3 Ohio State men's tennis team returns to the road after winning three home matches during the last week of February, with victories coming against Cleveland State, Wright State and No. 15 Louisville. The Buckeyes (14-1, 0-0) will travel to State College, Pa., Friday to begin Big Ten conference play against Penn State (6-5, 0-0). It will be just the second non-tournament regular-season road match of the year for the Scarlet and Gray. The match begins a stretch of seven-consecutive road matches, with the last six against ranked opponents.
The Buckeyes are 54-2 when they are the No. 3 ranked team in the country.
Fans can follow the action with live updates at PSU Livestats.

Recalling Last Week
The Buckeyes extended their home win streak to 121 matches with three victories at the Varsity Tennis Center Feb. 24 and 27. Ohio State swept its second doubleheader of the year, shutting out the Vikings of Cleveland State, 7-0, and downing Wright State, 6-1. By another 6-1 score, the Buckeyes beat No. 15 Louisville. The win improved Ohio State's record vs. nationally-ranked opponents to 5-1 on the season. The Scarlet and Gray's home win streak began in 2003.
Scouting the Nittany Lions
Penn State enters the Big Ten opener with an overall mark of 6-6 on the season. The Nittany Lions started off the season on a good note, winning six of their first eight contests, but have since lost four matches in a row, all against ranked opponents. Overall, the Lions are 1-6 vs. ranked teams on the season. During Feb. 25-27, Penn State competed in the Blue Gray Invite in Montgomery, Ala. The team suffered a 4-0 loss to No. 24 Notre Dame, as well as 4-1 losses to both No. 29 Alabama and No. 47 Boise State.
Buckeyes vs. Penn State
Ohio State is 18-5 all-time vs. the Nittany Lions. Under head coach Ty Tucker, the Buckeyes are an undefeated 12-0 vs. Penn State. They have not suffered a loss to the Blue and White since the 1998-99 campaign.
Last season No. 3 Ohio State shut out No. 62 Penn State, 7-0, for the second-consecutive year. Devin McCarthy claimed the match for the Buckeyes at No. 6 singles, defeating Guillaume St.-Maurice 6-1, 6-3. No. 17 Chase Buchanan, No. 26 Justin Kronauge, No. 74 Dino Marcan and current captains, Matt Allare and Balazs Novak also all won their singles matches in straight sets, preserving the shutout.
Big Ten Best
Ohio State enters the conference showdown with Penn State on a 66 Big Ten match win streak. Entering the season, the Buckeyes have amassed five-consecutive Big Ten regular-season and tournament titles. Coach Tucker has also nabbed Big Ten Coach of the Year every year during the span as well. Last season, Ohio State recorded a combined Big Ten singles mark of 58-2 and a total Big Ten doubles record of 18-8. In addition to the 66-consecutive match win streak in conference play, the Buckeyes also have been a winner in 118 of its last 123 league contests, including postseason play.
Road Ready
After defeating No. 19 North Carolina earlier this season, 6-1, Ohio State enters the match vs. Penn State this weekend on a 48-consecutive regular season (non-tournament) road win streak. The last road loss for the Buckeyes occurred at Notre Dame during the 2005-06 season where they fell to the Fighting Irish, 5-2. . . .

Eight Buckeyes Ranked in Latest Poll
New Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings were released Tuesday. Eight Buckeyes were ranked in the singles poll, which is the most of any team in the country.
Senior co-captain Balazs Novak marked the biggest improvement of any Buckeye this week, entering the rankings for the first time this season all the way to 76th place, partly because of his current 13-match win streak.
Junior Chase Buchanan, who was ranked 21st in the Feb. 14 standings and 63rd in the inaugural standings, jumped seven places to No. 14. Freshman Blaz Rola moved up one spot to No. 4 after he was initially ranked seventh Jan. 4. Senior Matt Allare jumped six spots to No. 39, while redshirt-sophomore Devin McCarthy is 46th, improving nine places.
A trio of freshmen round out the rankings for the Scarlet and Gray. Peter Kobelt had a large gain; jumping 23 spots from 86th to 63rd. Nelson Vick broke the century barrier moving to No. 95, while Ille Van Engelen sits at No. 112.
In the doubles poll, the teams of Rola-Buchanan and Allare-Kobelt each dropped two spots in the rankings. Rola and Buchanan fell to No. 8, while Allare and Kobelt now sit at No. 12. The duo of Novak and McCarthy form the No. 76th team in the March 1 release. . . .

Up Next
The Buckeyes will return to the road when they play at 7 p.m. ET March 10th as they travel to College Station, Texas, to take on the No. 18 Texas A&M Aggies.

Tucker switching things up a little bit when it comes to the doubles teams. The #1 doubles team is Kobelt /Allare but Buchanan is playing with MacCarthy at #2 doubles and Rola is playing with Novak at #3 doubles. At least this is the lineup for the Penn State match and the Nits need to find some tennis players. The doubles point is very close to being Ohio State's by winning all three matches and not very competitively
:io: doubles point to :osu: and not very pretty for PSU

Ilie Van Engelen picks up the 4th point and seals the Buckeye victory with a straight set win at #3 singles.
Victory #67 in a row in Big Ten play!
The match will probably last a while because it appears that PSU only has 4 courts to play 6 singles matches.
