The No. 4 Ohio State men's tennis team is one of 15 schools set to host the qualifying rounds of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships Saturday and Sunday at the Ohio State University Varsity Indoor Tennis Center. The event will showcase the Top 60 men's varsity tennis teams in the country at 15 campus sites.
The team that wins both of its matches in Columbus this weekend will be invited to play in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship Feb. 18-21. The University of Washington will serve as hosts.

INTRODUCING THE ITA KICK-OFF EVENT TEAMS
No. 4 Ohio State joins the other three teams travelling to Columbus as being ranked in the Top 75 of the latest Campbell/ITA Division I College Tennis Rankings. The visiting teams are No. 56 UC Irvine, No. 69 South Carolina and No. 75 William & Mary.
In the first match, Ohio State will face William & Mary at 10 a.m. Saturday, while UC Irvine will battle South Carolina at 2 p.m. Two matches are guaranteed and the winners/losers will play each other Sunday beginning at 10 a.m. The championship match is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
Ohio State holds a 1-4 mark against the Gamecocks, with the lone 4-0 victory occurring in the first round of the 2004 NCAA Tournament. UC Irvine and William & Mary have each lost to the Buckeyes once in their respective histories. . .
WILLIAM & MARY TRIBE
The Tribe enters the event this weekend with a 5-2 overall record. William & Mary have three 7-0 shutouts on the year against Richmond, Morgan State and Villanova. Their other two wins have been by a score of 6-1 to Winthrop and James Madison.
Both the Tribe's losses have come at the hands of ranked teams. No. 36 Notre Dame defeated the Green and Gold, 6-1, while No. 1 Virginia also downed William & Mary.
The Tribe boasts three players who have earned at least four dual-match singles wins on the season. Anton Andersson, Sebastien Vidal and Adrian Vodislav are each 4-2 on the year.
William & Mary wrapped up the 2009-10 men's tennis season finishing 20-10 overall and an undefeated 4-0 in the CAA. . .
DOMINANT IN COLUMBUS
The Buckeyes have won a school-record 112-consecutive home matches dating back to the 2002-03 season. In the Big Ten, no other team in any sport has won as many games in a row at home that the Buckeyes. Ohio State was victorious in all 21 home matches last season, marking the seventh-consecutive year the team achieved perfection in Columbus. The home win streak began on April, 6, 2003 with a 5-2 triumph over Purdue.
100th ANNIVERSARY OF TENNIS
The opener against Butler and Xavier will mark the 100th year of men's tennis at Ohio State. The tennis program started in 1912 and is the second oldest sport at Ohio State other than baseball. After 99 years, the men's tennis program has an overall record of 988-692-10 for a .585 winning percentage. Coach Tucker is the 11th coach in Ohio State history and with his winning percentage hovering around .850, he is the winningest coach in Buckeye tennis history.
SENIOR TRIO RETURNS
Ohio State returns three seniors who will be key starters in both the singles and doubles lineups this year. Matt Allare, Balazs Novak and Shuhei Uzawa have won a combined 244 singles matches in three full seasons with the Buckeyes. In 2010, each player claimed at least 20 wins. Tucker has seen these three develop as their confidence continues to grow each day in practice and this year is their time to lead by example. . . .
The trio has been so successful in the Big Ten, here is one final note: The three have combined for a career Big Ten singles record of 40-4.
The No. 4 Ohio State men's tennis team downed No. 75 William & Mary in the first match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Columbus. The Buckeyes are one of 15 schools hosting the qualifying rounds in preparation for the ITA National Team Indoor Championship being held at the University of Washington Feb. 18-21.
The No. 25-ranked Buckeye team of senior Balazs Novak and redshirt-sophomore Devin McCarthy quickly shutout William & Mary duo Anton Andersson and Ben Guthrie, 8-0. Seniors Matt Allare and Shuhei Uzawa followed with an 8-3 decision over the Tribe's Ilja Orre and Adrian Vodislav to give Ohio State an early 1-0 decision heading into singles play.
Sebastien Vidal and Jamie Whiteford of William & Mary defeated Buckeye tandem Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola, the seventh-ranked team nationally, 8-6.
In singles action, No. 7 Rola won the Buckeyes' first singles match of the tournament, beating Guthrie, 6-1, 6-2, to move to 16-2 on the season, including 3-0 in dual play.
Allare, a Mason, Ohio native, downed the Tribe's Vidal, winning his 90th match as a Buckeye. It was the first of four matches that was decided by a 6-2, 6-2 score. Not long after McCarthy beat Vodislav, improving to 25-4 while donning the Scarlet and Gray. Novak was victorious over Hoogland and William & Mary's Anderson was dealt a loss by Buchanan.
Also winning in singles play was freshman Ille Van Engelen, who moved to 3-0 in dual action on the young season by beating Whiteford, 6-0, 7-6 (5).
Ohio State will face the winner of the South Carolina-UC Irvine match taking place at 2 p.m. Saturday. William & Mary will face the loser of the South Carolina-UC Irvine matchup in the consolation match at 10 a.m. Sunday. The championship match will follow at 1 p.m. at the Varsity Tennis Center.

In the final match of the 2011 ITA Men's Kick-Off Weekend in Columbus, Ohio, the No. 4 Ohio State men's tennis team defeated No. 56 UC Irvine, 7-0, Sunday at the Ohio State University Varsity Indoor Tennis Center. With the victory, the Buckeyes will be one of 16 teams to compete at the 2011 ITA National Team Indoor Championship Feb. 18-21 in Seattle, Wash. The University of Washington will serve as hosts.
It is the fifth-consecutive year head coach Ty Tucker has led the Buckeyes to a spot at the championship event.
"It feels good to get the win and be one of the 16 teams moving on to Seattle," Tucker said, "It's a nice city and the Nordstrom Center is a great venue. We're looking forward to it."
Ohio State has now won a school-record 114-consecutive home matches dating back to the 2003 season.
In doubles play, Buckeyes Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola, the sixth-ranked tandem in the nation, jumped out to a quick lead at No. 2, defeating Sam Gould and Steven Henderson of UC Irvine on their way to an 8-0 shutout victory.
The Ohio State team of Matt Allare and Peter Kobelt won a hard-fought match against the Anteaters' Chris Kearney and Stephen Stege, 9-7, to earn the doubles point for the Buckeyes. The duo moved to 8-1 on the season in doubles competition.
In singles action, senior Balazs Novak and freshman Ille Van Engelen ended almost simultaneously, giving Ohio State the first two singles points. Novak downed Shan Sondhu, 6-2, 6-2, while Van Engelen, a Netherlands native, beat Stege, 6-1, 6-2.
In more singles action wins for the Scarlet and Gray, Rola beat Gould with a 6-2, 6-2, decision. Allare was victorious vs. Fabian Matthews, 6-3, 6-2. Irvine's Ryan Cheung lost 6-2, 6-4, at the hands of Devin McCarthy. Buchanan picked up the last point for Ohio State with a tough 6-3, 5-7, 10-6, win against Kearney.
Ohio State will return to action at 6 p.m. Sunday vs. in-state opponent Toledo at the Varsity Indoor Tennis Center. Admission is free.

Ohio State, the fourth-ranked team in the nation, defeated in-state opponent Toledo, 6-0, for its second win of the day at the Ohio State University Indoor Tennis Center. The match Sunday between the Buckeyes (5-0, 0-0) and Rockets (4-2, 0-0) was the 29th time the two schools met. With the win, Ohio State has now been the victor on 27 occasions.
It was the sixth-consecutive match Toledo was dealt a shutout by Ohio State. The Buckeyes improved to 95-24-1 all-time vs. MAC teams.
Buckeye junior Steven Williams and senior Shuhei Uzawa teamed up for the first time this dual season in doubles action and defeated Toledo's Mircea Dimofte and Bryant Dudzik, 8-2.
The other two doubles contests also ended in 8-2 decisions. Ohio State earned the doubles point after duo Matt Allare and Nelson Vick beat Leo Sarria and Nutthavit Likitkumchorn. Redshirt-sophomore Devin McCarthy and senior Balazs Novak downed Toledo duo Sven Burus and Aleksandar Elezovic by the same score.
In singles action, a pair of seniors earned the first two points for Ohio State. Novak made quick work of Leo Sarria 6-0, 6-1 while Uzawa shutout Terence Weigand in straight-set fashion 6-0, 6-0. Junior Chase Buchanan picked up another point for the Buckeyes by handing Toledo's Sven Burus a 6-0, 6-2 defeat.
Also in singles competition, Vick extended his singles winning streak to nine matches by defeating Gursher Harika 6-2, 6-0. Rounding out singles play, McCarthy won 6-3, 6-1 over Likitkumchorn.
Up next, the No. 4 Buckeyes will host a pair of SEC Top 20 teams in Mississippi and Georgia next weekend. The Buckeyes will welcome No. 18 Ole Miss at 5 p.m. Feb. 4 before hosting the No. 11 Bulldogs at noon Feb. 6 at the Varsity Tennis Center. Admission is free.

The fourth-ranked Ohio State men's tennis team will continue its homestand this weekend as it hosts a pair of Top 20 teams from the Southeastern Conference at the Varsity Indoor Tennis Center. The Buckeyes (5-0, 0-0) welcome the No. 18 Mississippi Rebels (2-1, 0-0) at 5 p.m. Friday and the No. 11 Georgia Bulldogs (3-0, 0-0) will visit Columbus at noon Sunday.
A Look at Mississippi
The Rebels travel to Columbus on a one-game slide after falling, 4-2, at No. 13 Louisville in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend event. Ole Miss defeated No. 35 Tulsa, 4-3, in the first round. Senior Tucker Vorster, who went 28-14 last season, clinched his match at No. 2 singles vs. the Hurricane in the opening round to advance the Rebels. In their only home match so far on the young season, Ole Miss shut out in-state opponent Southern Miss, 6-0.
Mississippi is looking to build off a successful 2009-10 campaign. The Rebels went 19-8 overall and 7-4 in SEC play. Ole Miss only lost two matches all year at home, going 10-2. Out of their 27 matches a year ago, 23 were against ranked opponents. Mississippi came away with 15 wins in those matches. All eight losses were against Top 10 teams.
Buckeyes vs. Rebels
Ohio State is 2-2 all-time vs. Mississippi. Last season, the Buckeyes traveled to Oxford and left with a 4-2 victory. The Rebels are coached by Billy Chadwick, who is in his 29th season in Oxford and has guided his teams to a 496-220 mark.
A Glance at Georgia
The Bulldogs are coming off an undefeated showing in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend tournament as hosts, defeating Oklahoma State, 4-0, in the first round of action, before handing No. 20 North Carolina its first loss of the season, 4-1. Georgia won its eighth-consecutive season opener Jan. 24, shutting out the Clemson Tigers, 7-0, to move to 47-9 all-time in season openers. The Bulldogs are lead by 13th-ranked and senior All-American Javier Garrapiz, who is still perfect on the season and building off a 33-win season in 2009-10.
Last year, the Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 21-8, finishing 9-3 in the SEC. They were 16-3 at home, where they hosted the NCAA men's tennis championships for a record 26th time. Georgia advanced to the semifinals while playing on its home courts in the NCAA tournament before falling to No. 2 Tennessee, 4-1. All of the Bulldogs' regular-season losses were vs. teams ranked No. 10 or better.
Buckeyes vs. Bulldogs
The Buckeyes are 2-10 vs. Georgia all-time. Ohio State won, 4-2, in Athens last season, handing the Bulldogs one of their three home losses of the year at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The Red and Black are led by head coach Manuel Diaz, who in his 24th-year in control, has guided his teams to a 509-108 overall record. Georgia returns two starters and four letterwinners from a year ago. . . .
