Ohio State Men's Tennis (2014/2019/2024 ITA Indoor National Champs, 17 Straight B1G Titles)

With 3 B1G matches to play, this was a critical match for the tennis Bucks.
Not only does it give the advantage heading into the showdown in Ann Arbor next week, it also was critical for confidence.
The only 2 losses on the season were by 4-3 scores and the advantage of playing a closely contested match with a positive conclusion will benefit the Bucks in the future.
They will potentially face many more of these nail biter types in the NCAA tournament.
Reflecting on yesterday's performance:
Bucks lost the double's point for only the 2nd time this year. The momentum was quickly restored when Senior McCarthy came through quickly dispatching his opponent at #4.
And Chris Diaz has been the pleasant surprise addition to the single's lineup. His straight set win at #5 was absolutely critical.
I did not foresee Blaz Rola dropping his match at #1, he had been undefeated all year, and may be the best in the NCAA. Last year he had an off day in the B1G tournament at Illinois, so maybe those courts possess some kind of curse. Will give a shout out to Hitzlik the frosh from Illinois who obviously played a strong match.
The two matches at #2 and #3 which clinched the Buckeye victory also demonstrated the gut it out and persevering nature of a Ty Tucker coached team. Tucker has said that to win on your opponent's court requires you to be at least 10% better than them.
Kobelt dropped his first set, but battled back to take the 2nd. Smith faltered late in the 2nd, and had seemingly lost the momentum entering the third set.
Smith and Kobelt claimed early breaks in third sets and held serve to seal the day and keep the Buckeyes undefeated at 8-0 in the B1G conference.
Buckeyes will take on Northwestern tomorrow at 1 pm.
And then the season concludes next weekend with a home Friday vs. MSU and away match Sunday at TSUN (7-1).
The Sunday finale will in all likelihood determine the B1G conference regular season title as an undefeated Buckeye squad will face the only other team with less than 2 losses.
Go Bucks!

#2 Kobelt dropped his first set but is up a break at 4-1 in the 2nd.

And just like that points #4,5,and 6 go up on the board for the Buckeyes.
Wins by #6 Diaz, #5 Van Engelen, and #4 McCarthy in straight sets. (but not bagel sets 6-0).
#2 Peter Kobelt battled back after dropping the first to win the 2nd set.
It may be the will play a super tie breaker to decide the 3rd set.

I won't make it, but would assume there would be plenty of OSU fans at the match.
Buck fans travel and vocalize well,
unlike professional tennis the atmosphere in NCAA matches does not mandate a "hushed" crowd.
At Kentucky the fan split was about 60% UK, 40% OSU.
If you do make the trip, hope you vocalize your encouragement and would love to hear about your experience.

Buckeyes prevail this afternoon over the MSU Spartans with a 6-1 finish.
OSU swept all three doubles and with Blaz Rola sitting out senior day,
the Bucks took 5 of the 6 singles in straight sets.
Winners in singles were:
#1 Kobelt 6-2, 6-3,
#2 McCarthy 6-3, 6-4,
#3 Smith 6-4, 6-3,
#4 Diaz 6-0, 6-1, and
#6 Callahan 6-2, 6-2.

#5 Constantin Christ dropped his match 6-4, 6-4 to put the only point on the MSU board.

Next up is TSUN on Sunday at noon to decide the B1G regular season title.

Buckeyes take the doubles point at TSUN
Wins at #3 by an easy 8-3 score.
Also after being down by a 7-4 score, the #1 duo of Smith and Kobelt rallied with 5 straight games to win 9-7.
#2 doubles is up a break serving at 7-6 but it looks like they will not finish/match abandoned.
Singles up next for the opportunity for Bucks to capture their 8th outright big Ten title.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to go, as I had something else pop up, but it is nice to come home and see us having taken the doubles point!
