Until two weeks ago, the word was verboten around Ty Tucker.
The Ohio State men?s tennis coach knew his team was on the cusp of something so incredible ? 10 years without a home loss ? that he didn?t want to jinx it.
So Tucker did all but put his hands over his ears and close his eyes whenever the word streak was mentioned. But finally Tucker relented. He wants to see recognition for his players and his program. Besides, why not embrace such an achievement?
A 7-0 victory over Wisconsin yesterday at the Varsity Tennis Center was the final hurdle. The fifth-ranked Buckeyes (22-2) have won 164 consecutive matches against visiting teams since losing to Illinois on April 5, 2003. The streak is the longest current one in any Division I team sport. ?It really hasn?t sunk in,? Tucker said after the match. ?In the grand scheme, it doesn?t mean a whole lot with the goals we have for this season. But it is nice to grab something you can hold onto forever.?The last time Ohio State lost, its current No. 1 player, Peter Kobelt, was a sixth-grader in New Albany.
?It is something I?m pretty excited about because it?s something that might not ever happen again at Ohio State,? Tucker said. ?It?s something nice for these guys who?ve been a part of it. It?s nice for tennis to get that kind of recognition, and good for these guys because they?re definitely quality athletes.?
Tucker said the reason for the streak is simple: great players and his coaching staff. His players say that Tucker deserves most of the credit. A two-time All-American at Ohio State who has coached the Buckeyes since 1999, Tucker remains a bundle of energy, endlessly prodding his players to maximize their potential.
?It doesn?t matter if it?s a warm-up, a day before the match or a week before the match,? said junior Blaz Rola, Ohio State?s No. 2 singles player. ?He?s 100 percent focused.?
Kobelt, No. 3 in the NCAA singles rankings, said that Tucker is largely responsible for his success.
?Every day, no matter how you?re feeling or the attitude you bring, he always gets the most out of you,? Kobelt said. ?I can?t give enough thanks to him.?
What makes the Buckeyes? unbeaten decade at home so remarkable is that Ohio isn?t exactly an ideal locale for tennis; Florida and California produce most of the top players, and it?s a challenge for Tucker to recruit players willing to play much of the season indoors or contend with chilly and windy weather when they finally do get outdoors....
Commentary: Covering men's tennis shows hope in otherwise scandal-ridden sports world By Mark Batke
Stop what you are doing. Turn on ESPN. What do you see? A slew of NCAA sanctions, fake girlfriends, falsification of academic records and abusive coaches chucking basketballs at players? heads floods the screen. It is enough to make even the most extreme college sports fan sit down and do some soul-searching about the future of their fandom. ...
The players on the OSU men?s tennis team love what they do, and they do it well:
Tucker has coached the Buckeyes to seven consecutive Big Ten regular season titles, six more Big Ten tournament crowns and a decade-long home win streak (which, by the way, is the longest home win streak in NCAA sports), and has barely made a peep about it. If I were not badgering him with questions all semester long, I am pretty sure he would not talk about it at all. The humility he emulates trickles down to his players. These guys are here to play tennis, and it shows.
The players love each other, too:
It took me a while to realize, but the tennis team is comprised of the most random assortment of players ever. There are four international players on the 11-man roster. To the naked, untrained eye, you would think the men had known each other their entire lives, and not just during their time at OSU. Their chemistry off the court is equally, if not more obvious and impressive, than when they are on the court.
The players use their game to capture what?s special about collegiate sports:
This is my favorite part. On Friday, when the team captured its 164th straight home victory and officially went 10 years without a home loss, the celebration that followed was what many would consider uneventful. There was no confetti falling from the ceiling or camera flashbulbs firing, but what there was were a group a college kids running around, laughing and throwing arms around each other while their head coach smirked at them off to the side. Several fans cheered in the bleachers, but they were mostly parents of players. The energy in the room, though, was contagious ? even palpable. The players were ecstatic, and they didn?t need a fat paycheck or swarm of media attention to evoke it.
Maybe it?s just me, but that?s what a college sports team should be at its core. It?s what I now believe many teams at many schools across the country must look like. It just took a lesser-publicized sport, men?s tennis, to remind me of that. Consider my faith in college athletics restored.
