Ohio State Men's Tennis (2014/2019/2024 ITA Indoor National Champs, 17 Straight B1G Titles)

I think "straight sets" just means none of the single players lost a set. It would be pretty impressive to not drop a game though.
You are correct. There were quite a few games lost in the sets. Minnesota did not win a set which is not that unusual considering the same thing was going to happen against Wright State but 3 matches went unfinished. I mean the B1G does not have much to offer except for maybe Illinois and TSUN and they do not have much:wink:

Buckeyes will be making a challenging trip to Illinois this weekend.
Friday they face the #29 ranked Illini, Sunday the #34 Northwestern Wildcats.

Today's showdown in Champaign Urbana will be a rematch of the B1G championship tournament final which ended the consecutive B1G conference win streak the Buckeyes had going since 2006.

In last year's tournament the Illini capitalized on several Buckeye off days to pull a 4-3 upset and break the string of 7 consecutive B1G tournament titles.

Should be interesting to see how motivated the 7-0 Bucks will be at the site of that upset. I am looking for Rola, Kobelt, McCarthy, Smith and others vets to pumping some adrenaline this afternoon at 4 pm.

On the other side, Illinois is currently in 3rd place in the B1G with a 5-2 record and facing the possibility of dropping from the title race with a loss.:)

The Illinois official tennis site has this preview of today's big match.

THE REMATCH
The Illini and Ohio State last met on the grand stage of the Big Ten Tournament Championship match, where the Orange and Blue secured a dramatic 4-3 comeback over the third-ranked Buckeyes. The victory snapped Ohio State's 92-match winning streak against Big Ten teams and ended OSU's six-year reign as tournament champs. It also marked the first win over the Buckeyes since 2007.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
The #5 Buckeyes have played great tennis in 2013, accumulating a 24-2 record. They're undefeated in conference play at 7-0 and boast a 6-1 away record. Ohio State's only two losses have come at the hands of then #15 Texas A&M and #1 Virginia. On the flip side, the Buckeyes' key victories this year have come against #6 Georgia and #5 Pepperdine. In conference competition, Ohio State has garnered six shutouts in their seven victories.
Illinois will have to deal with #9 Blaz Rola, who just picked up his fourth Big Ten Tennis Athlete of the Week honor. Rola is 19-0 overall in singles, including a 14-0 mark at the No. 1 position. In addition, Rola has yet to drop a doubles match as well, currently 21-0, mainly playing in the No. 3 slot.
However the most wins on the team in dual matches belongs to #84 Devin McCarthy (20-2) and #63 Connor Smith (20-3). McCarthy is undefeated in Big Ten play and 15-2 when playing No. 3 singles, while Smith primarily plays the No. 4 where he is 12-2. The honor of playing the No. 1 position in doubles belongs to Peter Kobelt and Connor Smith who are 13-1 in that slot. ...

ITA RANKINGS
In the April 9 ITA poll, both Illini singles and doubles players jumped up the charts. Freshman Jared Hiltzik climbed to #36 in singles while Tim Kopinski and Ross Guignon are now #19 as a doubles team, a career high for the sophomore duo. Furthermore, Kopinski also ranks with Farris Gosea in doubles, checking in at #76.
Ohio State will bring five ranked singles players to the table on Friday. Peter Kobelt leads off at #6 followed by #9 Blaz Rola, #61 Chris Diaz, #63 Connor Smith and #84 Devin McCarthy. The Buckeyes also have three ranked doubles pairings: #16 Kobelt/Smith, #32 McCarthy/Ille Van Engelen and #33 Rola/Metka.

PROMOTIONS
A Friday matchup can only mean one thing?Flapjack Friday is back! Free pancakes for all fans in attendance for the Illinois vs Ohio State match. In addition, it is Silver Mine Sub Sandwich Day in which there will be free subs for all U of I students, including a sub eating contest.
Interesting how a once prestigious Illinois tennis program realizes the esteem from which she has fallen, now providing double food incentive to entice student attendance.:wink2:

#3 Bucks with an 8-5 win.
Bucks need one of the tight matches at 1 or 2 to secure the point.

Edit;
Illini take the breaker at #1. Bucks will need #2, to take the critical advantage heading into singles portion.

#2 Kobelt guts out a tough 3 set win for point #3 on the B1G board for the good guys, 3-2.
Will need one more point to take revenge for last year's loss at Illinois.
#6 Callahan still poised to take a 2nd set victory, still stuck at 5-4, but Jesse of Illinois must be playing tough.
Smith at #3 is on serve in the 3rd up 3-2.

Connor Smith clinches the victory for OSU with a 6-3 third set!!!

Callahan in a 2nd set tie breaker at #6.
Would suppose that if he loses the 2nd set breaker,
they would play a 3rd set super tie breaker (first to 10 win by 2 points) to decide the match.
