The six-time defending Big Ten champion and No. 2 Ohio State men?s tennis team (23-2; 5-0 Big Ten) won both of its matches Sunday as part of a doubleheader. In the first match, the Buckeyes downed Iowa 7-0 in their first match at the new outdoor Varsity Tennis Courts to move to 5-0 in the Big Ten. The team also was victorious in second match of the day against Youngstown State 6-0 at the Varsity Indoor Tennis Center.
Against Iowa, Nelson Vick earned a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 6 vs. Joey White to give Ohio State a 4-0 advantage and guarantee the victory for the Buckeyes. It was the 14th-consecutive win vs. the Hawkeyes for Ohio State.
In doubles, Devin McCarthy and Ille Van Engelen downed Garret Dunn and Michael Swank 8-3 on court one to capture the doubles point for the home team. Peter Kobelt and Connor Smith were the first pair done after posting an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles vs. Matt Hagan and Will Vasos.
In other double action, Chase Buchanan and Kevin Metka handed Tom Mroziewicz and Jonas Dierckx an 8-6 loss on court three. It was the first time Buchanan and Metka have been on the same side of the net during doubles play.
In singles, Hunter Callahan easily won his match vs. Connor Gilmore 6-0, 6-3, while Kobelt defeated Dunn 6-3, 6-1 to give Ohio State a 3-0 lead. Vick would soon follow with the match?s fourth point.
In other action, Van Engelen was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Vasos, Buchanan won 6-2, 6-3 vs. Hagan at the No. 1 position and Vick downed White 6-3, 6-3.

Against Youngstown State, the Buckeyes played all six singles matches to completion and did not play any doubles.

Buchanan netted a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles vs. Tariq Ismail for his 19th win of the season to clinch the Buckeye victory, earning the match-winning fourth point.
Kobelt gave Ohio State the early lead after a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles vs. Silviu Mistreanu. He moves to 3-0 on court two this season and 18-9 overall. Steven Williams gave up no points (sic) in a 6-0, 6-0 shutout against Felipe Rosa at No. 6 singles. It was the senior?s first match of the season.
Smith extended the lead to 3-0 after he moved to 22-5 on the season with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Dawould Kabli. Buchanan?s win came shortly after.
The lead became 5-0 after Van Engelen?s 6-2, 6-3 win on court four. The win was the Netherlands native?s 20th win of the season. Vick was the last Buckeye finished, beating 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5 singles. He moves to 10-4 overall.
Up next, Ohio State will meet Wisconsin in Madison at 3 p.m. April 6. The team will look to extend its Big Ten win streak to 85 consecutive matches vs. the Badgers.

Just a note that the OSU writer still doesn't understand the difference between points and games. :smash:

Despite a week where the Buckeye's were undefeated, they lost 3+ computer points and the most recent ITA poll has dropped them from 2nd to 3rd in the rankings.
The month of April has historically been a challenge for the Buckeyes as they face primarily weaker B1G teams on the schedule and the slide in the computer generated rankings ensues.
This year the script will repeat itself as only a tOSU win over #18 ranked Illinois on 4/13 could potentially give points in the computer rankings.

The Buckeyes, who are seeking their sixth and seventh conference wins of the season, will try to extend win streaks vs. both Big Ten teams this weekend. Ohio State has won 21 consecutive matches vs. the Badgers and 10 consecutive against the Gophers. The Scarlet and Gray will also look to extend their 84-match win streak vs. Big Ten opponents to 86 this weekend....

Wisconsin Watch
The Badgers are 8-9 overall entering the match with Ohio State, having lost their last four matches. Wisconsin has victories over Butler, Western Illinois, Marquette, Idaho and Green Bay. The Badgers are 0-5 in league play.
Ohio State vs. the Badgers
Ohio State leads Wisconsin 40-32 in the overall series. The Buckeyes have won 21 consecutive matches against Wisconsin, dating back to the 1999-00 season. The Scarlet and Gray shut out the Badgers 7-0 last year in Columbus.
Minnesota Notes
Minnesota is 8-5 overall for the season which places them at No. 47 in the latest ITA team standings. The Gophers are coming off two tough losses, a 4-2 setback at No. 17 Illinois and a 4-3 loss at No. 48 Northwestern. However, before those two matches, Minnesota won seven consecutive contests, including wins vs. Arizona, DePaul, Wisconsin, Virginia Tech, Michigan State and Michigan. Currently the Gophers are 3-2 in Big Ten action, with a 3-0 mark at their home site, the Baseline Tennis Center.

The Scarlet and Gray downed Minnesota twice last season, a 7-0 shutout in their last road match of the regular season and a 4-0 victory in the Big Ten Tournament final....
Up Next
Ohio State will return home for a 6 p.m. match April 13th, against Illinois. The match will take place at the outdoor Varsity Tennis Courts, weather pending.

Buckeyes will venture north on this holiday road trip.
Bucks will need to stay focused in foreign venue where it is easy to get distracted especially at Minnesota on Easter.
It doesn't appear Wisconsin has live updates for their tennis programs.:(
Go Bucks!

Buckeye's tennis team continues to cruise through Big 10 opponents, They notched their 86th consecutive victory vs. B1G opponents when they defeated Minnesota 6-1 at the Baseline tennis Center Sunday afternoon.

The 47th-ranked Minnesota men?s tennis team put forth a solid effort, but dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 3 Ohio (sic) at the Baseline Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon. Freshman Mathieu Froment helped the Gophers avoid being swept by rallying to beat Connor Smith in a match tiebreaker in No. 6 singles.

As they had in 25 of their first 26 matches, the Buckeyes earned a point in the doubles competition.

Smith and Peter Kobelt put OSU in front with a win over Phillip Arndt and Jack Hamburg at No. 3. Ohio State clinched the point when Blaz Rola and Chase Buchanan, the top-ranked doubles duo in the nation, handed 22nd-ranked Rok Bonin and Julian Dehn their second loss of the spring in 14 matches with an 8-5 win.

The Buckeyes completed the sweep when the No. 39-ranked combination of Devin McCarthy and Ille Van Engelen came out on top of a back-and-forth contest with Juan Pablo Ramirez and Leandro Toledo, 8-6. The loss dropped Ramirez and Toledo to 10-1. It was the Gopher tandem?s first match at the No. 2 position.

In singles, fifth-ranked Rola, No. 69 McCarthy, and No. 54 Kobelt won in straight sets at the first, fifth, and third positions, respectively, to clinch the win.

Toledo fell at the No. 2 position to 12th-ranked Buchanan in three sets after winning the first set 6-2 and Dehn was edged in a close match at No. 4, 7-6 (2), 7-5.

Froment then completed a comeback win at No. 6 to make it a 6-1 final. The freshman fell behind after losing the first set 7-5, but won the second set 6-3 and capped the victory with a 10-8 triumph in the match tiebreaker.

The win by Froment mark the third point conceded by Ohio State in eight Big Ten matches this season. Ohio State is now 25-2 on the year with an 8-0 conference record while the Gophers are 9-6 with a 4-3 mark in the Big Ten.

Don't want to complain about the good news but it is hard to understand how a victory over unranked Wisconsin and #47 ranked Minnesota racked up enough points for tOSU to leap the Cavaliers.
Their are now two matches on the schedule that should offer the Buckeyes some point value, ITA #23 Illinois (6-1) travels to Columbus this Friday with the B1G title at stake.
Also in a week #22 TSUN (6-1) will travel to c'bus for their impotent and futile shot at the 2012 B1G title.
The singles and doubles rankings will also be released today.
Will update the Buckeye individuals later.

The only issue is the delta between us and spot 4 shrank. 2nd or 3rd is irrelevent to me; in fact I would be okay w 3rd so we can have a mental edge playing UVA again in the NCAA tournament.

Good catch! Hadn't noticed the shrinkage between #2, 3, & 4 spots!
I am also concerned with tOSU dropping to #4, however the schedule is looking more favorable for the Buckeyes maintaining their edge on UVA.

I am hoping and would love to see UGa jump UVA for third seed and letting #4 UVA battle with #1 USC in the semis.
Dogs may only need one good win at #15 UTenn on Friday and could have the points to pass UVa. Virginia has a home match vs. #29 Fla State left. Buckeyes have 2 top 25 opponents left, #23 Illinois, and #22 Tsun both at C'bus.
Conference Tournaments would also be opportunities for all teams to get computer points. SEC has 8 top 25 teams, ACC and B1G have 3 each. Advantage Georgia.
Go Bucks!

If UGA jumped Uva I believe the dogs are more vulnerable to the revenge minded Buckeyes even in Athens than UVa would be.
