No. 2 Buckeyes Welcome No. 23 Illinois, No. 46 Northwestern
Ohio State looking to extend 144 match win streak at home this weekend

The No. 2 Ohio State men?s tennis team (25-2, 7-0 Big Ten) will return home after being on the road its previous two matches. The Buckeyes welcome No. 23 Illinois for a 6 p.m. match Friday and Northwestern for a noon contest on Sunday. The Illini match is scheduled to take place at the Varsity Indoor Tennis Center, while the tilt with the Wildcats is set to occur at the new outdoor Varsity Tennis Courts. . . .

Illinois Watch
The Illini are 12-4 overall entering the match with Ohio State, having won seven of their last eight matches. They have non-conference victories over Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, Tennessee and Texas A&M. Illinois is currently 6-1 in conference play, with its only loss occurring at home last weekend to Michigan. The Wolverines squeaked out a 4-3 victory vs. the Illini for its lone Big Ten loss. They have beat Nebraska, Iowa, Northwestern, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan State. All four losses for the Illini have been vs. ranked teams.
Ohio State vs. the Illini
Ohio State trails Illinois 54-39-1 in the overall series between the two Big Ten teams. But the Buckeyes have won nine consecutive matches against Illinois, dating back to the 1999-00 season. Ohio State is 14-9 vs. the Illini since Ty Tucker became head coach in 1999. The Buckeyes and Illinois have met in the previous eight Big Ten tournaments following the regular season, with Ohio State holding on to a 6-2 advantage.
Noting Northwestern
Northwestern is 12-7 overall for the season which places them at No. 46 in the latest ITA team standings. The Wildcats have won six of their last seven contests, all in the Big Ten. Their lone two conference losses have been against Michigan and Illinois. They have beaten Iowa, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan State. Non-conference wins include Ball State, Alabama, New Mexico and Western Michigan.
Ohio State vs. the Wildcats
The Buckeyes and Northwestern are 43-43 in the series. However, Ohio State has won 14 of its last 15 vs. the Wildcats, all under the direction of Ty Tucker. The Scarlet and Gray have won eight consecutive in the series, including six straight shutouts.
Buckeye Ties
Current Northwestern assistant coach Chris Klingemann is a graduate of Ohio State and was a vital part of the Buckeyes successful tennis teams from 2003-07. Klingemann, in his first year coaching the Wildcats, is tied for 15th in career singles wins at Ohio State with 89. His 61 career doubles wins places him 24th in the record book. During his senior season donning the Scarlet and Gray, Klingemann earned All-Big Ten honors as well as achieving academic All-Big Ten. The ex-Buckeye is a native of Seattle, Wash., and spent two-and-a-half years playing on the ATP circuit after graduation before joining Northwestern.

Huge match Friday against powerhouse Illinois. Sounds like the team is wanting to have a strong and vocal crowd at the Varsity Indoor Center tomorrow.
The Illini dropped a heartbreaker last week to TSUN. Otherwise this match would be the showdown for the Big 10 title. Illini #1 player Senior Dennis Nevolo is steady, strong and ranked #4 in the ITA.
Before Coach Tucker came to tOSU (thank you Andy Geiger) the Illini won the Big 10 season title and tournament regularly. Their dominance ended in 2006!
The Buckeyes have won 9 straight over Illinois in the conference regular season and tournament. Buckeyes have not lost a match at home since 2003, (143 straight) and have not lost in the Big 10 since 2005 (86 consecutive).

The official site also notes how the Tucker coaching tree has expanded with Northwestern coach Chris Klingeman's success. Klingeman was exceptional on the Buckeye team and now has the Wildcats heading in the right direction.

A nice crowd showed up at the Varsity Center tonight to witness the 2012 version of Buckeye Big Ten domination.
Sometimes it is difficult to believe that such a radical shift in conference tennis power has occured.
From 1999-2005, Illinois was king of the Big Ten. That reign has been overthrown. Buckeyes have won the last 10 straight head to head vs. the Illini.
Blaz Rola played the #38 ranked player in the NCAA and it was no contest. Almost seemed that Blaz gave Kalmanovich a courtesy hold to prevent the double bagel.
Chase Buchanan was sharp, clean and came up with 2 key breaks of serve against the #5 ranked player in the NCAA.
It also appears that the double's teams are firing on all cylinders.
Lots of momentum is being generated for the showdown for the Big Ten title vs. second place TSUN next Sunday 4.22 in Columbus.
Next up is a surprising Northwestern squad, this Sunday at noon.

After losing the double's point for only the second time this year, the Buckeyes prevail against Northwestern by a 5-2 final.
Recap is from the OSU official tennis site.

The No. 2 Ohio State men?s tennis team (27-2; 8-0 Big Ten) netted a 5-2 win over No. 46 Northwestern (13-8, 6-3) Sunday at the outdoor Varsity Tennis Courts. The victory over the Wildcats extended Ohio State?s conference win streak to 88 matches.
The Buckeyes remain undefeated at home this season, currently posting a 19-0 record with only Michigan remaining on their home schedule (12 p.m., Sunday March 22). It was Ohio State?s 145th-consecutive victory at home overall.
The Buckeyes secured the win after redshirt-junior Devin McCarthy downed Alex Pasareanu 6-4, 6-1 for the team?s fourth-consecutive singles win after losing the doubles point. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native?s win was his ninth-consecutive and 23rd overall.
The victory gives Ohio State 15 wins in its last 16 attempts vs. Northwestern, all under the direction of head coach Ty Tucker. With the string of success under Tucker, the Buckeyes now lead the Wildcats 44-43 in the series.
Connor Smith and Peter Kobelt quickly jumped out to a 4-0 lead vs. Northwestern?s Sidarth Balaji and Tobias Reitz at No. 3 doubles en route to an easy 8-1 victory. Smith and Kobelt move to 22-4 overall, including a 15-1 mark on court three. At 8-0 in the Big Ten, the pair is the only remaining Buckeye team without a conference loss.
However, the remaining two doubles contests would not treat the Buckeyes the same, as Northwestern won on courts one and two to grab the first point. McCarthyand Ille Van Engelen, ranked 23rd nationally, fell to Raleigh Smith and Pasareanu 8-5 on court two, before the nation?s top-ranked tandem of Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola lost 8-6 in a hard-fought match vs. Josh Graves and Spencer Wolf.
It was only the second time this season Ohio State trailed after doubles play. The Scarlet and Gray also lost the doubles point at Notre Dame March 3 before travelling back to Columbus with a 5-2 triumph.

Rola, ranked seventh nationally, was the first Buckeye done in singles for the second-consecutive match, tying the match at 1-1 with a 6-0, 6-2 victory vs. Graves. The straight-set victory was the team-high 27th for the Ptuj, Slovenia, native.
The Buckeyes took a 2-1 lead after Buchanan, ranked No. 13, beat Wolf 6-0, 6-3 on court two to remain unbeaten in the Big Ten and earn his 98th singles win of his career. Smith extended Ohio State?s lead to two with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Chris Jackman at the sixth position giving the Tampa, Fla., native a 25-5 overall record in his first season as a Buckeye. McCarthy followed with his 19th dual win shortly after.
In the final two single matches, Van Engelen defeated Balaji 6-4, 6-4 and Kobelt lost a third-set super tiebreaker 11-9 after splitting the first two sets 6-4, 4-6.
Up next, Ohio State will meet Purdue at 3 p.m. Wednesday in West Lafayette in its final regular-season road match.

:paranoid:

According to a source close to the program when The Ohio State University has a tennis match against Illinois it is not really a match but it's more like Game On! I don't know maybe it has something to do with Zook Recruiting:)

The bad blood between the teams is apparent to most casual observers as well. The issues seem to be around the behaviors of Brad Dancer, head coach of Illinois.
On Friday there was a more than normal share of chirping about line calls.
Both Illinois coaches were visibly disruptive, highly animated in complaining about everything, even things they didn't see. Really felt some pity for the umpires.

The Illini tennis program has been a proud and strong program but have been on a freefall recently, lost 3 straight to TSUN, Kentucky, and tOSU before they managed a win over PSU Sunday.

The Illini head coach Brad Dancer took over in '05, (same year as ZOOK). But prior to his hire under legendary Coach Tilley, the Illini had dominated the Big Ten for a decade.
Since Dancer's hire, the Illinois tennis program has been in gradual decline the last 7 years.
Just in case I forget, thank you Andy Geiger for hiring Ty Tucker in 1999.

The ITA released their team rankings today and Virginia again bumped tOSU out of 2nd spot by a slim .11 margin.

It is difficult to comprehend how UVa jumped tOSU again. :smash:
Last week the Buckeyes had quality wins over #20 Illinois and #44 Northwestern, but dropped in computer points 77.52 last week to 75.42 today.
Virginia claimed W's over #32 Florida State and #69 Miami and held fairly steady, down .17.
The margin of difference between 2,3,4 is razor thin.:yow1:
A win over #21 TSUN is mandatory for any Buckeye's hope of hanging on to a #2 or #3 seed in the NCAA's.
On a positive note, Virginia's quality wins over Duke will not be as valuable next week as Duke dropped from #5 to #8 in the rankings this week. This week's opponent ranking will be used to tally points next week.
The Buckeyes 2 quality wins over Kentucky should also count for more points in the rankings next week.

Six Buckeyes were also listed in the ITA single's rankings released today.

Link

#6 Blaz Rola
#12 Chase Buchanan
#67 Peter Kobelt
#83 Devin McCarthy

Kobelt and McCarthy have a chance to be included in the NCAA single's draw in May, top 64 ranked players receive invitation to compete for the title. Rola and Buchanan are now playing for seeding in the draw.

Four Buckeye double's teams were also included in the ITA double's rankings released today.

link

#1 Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola
#34 Ilie VanEngelen and Devin McCarthy (down 11 spots)
#44 Chase Buchanan and Peter Kobelt
#64 Blaz Rola and Conner Smith

The NCAA double's tournament in May will invite the top 32 teams.
VanEngelen and McCarthy won over Illinois this week but dropped their match vs. Northwestern and are back on the bubble of being excluded.

Am I correct in assuming that we want to be either #2 or #3  to avoid the  whitehorse team. If my assumption is correct don't we have to be looking over our shoulders at Georgia or are they too far back:confused: Also what is the advantage of being #2 or #3 as long as we avoid the team mentioned above.

Yep, Seeds #4 and #5 will face #1 in the semis, not where Bucks want to have to take 'em down.
In the best scenario, would love to see UVa and USC in the semifinal of 1 vs. 4. OSU vs. UGa, 2 vs. 3 in the other bracket.

If my assumption is correct don't we have to be looking over our shoulders at Georgia or are they too far back:confused:

Georgia is in easy striking distance of both OSU and UVA <.5 computer points.
The Bulldogs will have a lot of opportunity to make up computer points in the SEC tournament this weekend. They could potentially face 3 top 25 and 2 top 10 teams in the 3 rounds they play.
If they jump the Buckeyes, they would also likely jump the Cavaliers as well.
Right now if UGA wins the SEC tourney, they will probably earn enough points to be the #2 seed. Buckeyes will need to add enough points to pass Virginia for the 3 spot.

Also what is the advantage of being #2 or #3 as long as we avoid the team mentioned above.

I don't see any advantage as long as we stay at #2 or #3.

Kudos, some astute questions and observations Litl, with my thoughts in bold.
