No. 36 Wisconsin (15-9; 4-6 Big Ten) is the No. 8 seed in the 2009 Big Ten Tournament. The Buckeyes defeated the Badgers, 7-0, April 19 at the Stickney Tennis Center. The Badgers lost their last three Big Ten matches to Penn State and Minnesota before falling to Ohio State. Away from its home court in Madison, Wis., the Badgers are 5-7 this season. Wisconsin began the season winning the first five matches before losing to No. 57 East Tennessee State, 4-3, Jan. 30 at home. The Badgers have key wins against Wake Forest, Notre Dame and Michigan.
Wisconsin finished tied for second place in the conference last season with Illinois, which was it best finish since placing second at the end of the 1978 campaign. The Badgers will look to make a run for its first Big Ten championship in program history.
The Badgers have two members listed in the latest Campbell/ITA College Tennis Division I Rankings. Sophomore Moritz Baumann is No. 31, while freshman Marek Michalicka is No. 55. Baumann is 22-1 overall and owns a 16-1 mark at No. 1 singles. Michalicka is 14-7 overall, while going 12-2 at No. 2 singles this season.
In doubles, Baumann and Michalicka stand at No. 22 in the ITA polls. The Badger duo is 18-4 overall and at No. 1 doubles.
