Ohio State Men's Tennis (2014/2019/2024 ITA Indoor National Champs, 17 Straight B1G Titles)

Congratulations to Brian, Steven, and Justin--quite an accomplishment to have 3 members of one team selected to compete in the ITA round of 64 tournament.
Somewhat concerned that Moneke who is ranked #9 in the last ITA poll did not receive one of the 16 automatic bids (if seeds are based on automatic qualification rather than ITA rankings, Steven may face a tougher draw).
Go Bucks, make us all proud of you.

I saw a lot of Xavier fans at the match, and sat next to one who wore a shirt that said, "It doesn't matta anymore, now its Miller time."
Asked him how Miller time was working out for them?

Michigan now stands in the way again of tOSU accomplishing their dream!
Guess we all know what that means. Go Bucks.

A threepeat over Big Ten nemesis TSUn courtesy of a gutsy showing by the Buckeyes. The tOSU men's team is heading west for its 6th NCAA sweet 16 matchup at Texas A & M on Thursday. (That is the 6th in the last 7 years after never qualifying for the sweet 16 prior to 2002!)
In tough wind conditions the Buckeyes prevailed with a 4-1 victory at the Stickney tennis center in Columbus. Paid attendance was almost 300 mostly pro-Buckeye fans.

I wonder if Boise State will want to play us on a blue surface:lol: I don't think, will change that, color isn't going to make any difference they can play on a rainbow surfers and the outcome is still going to be the same. Ohio State :2004:Boise State:)

This is the website which lists the players chosen for the field of the NCAA singles championship at Texas A & M next week.
Brian Konecko was deservedly awarded the #3 seed in the tournament.
Even better news, although he was not an automatic qualifier, Steven Moneke will receive a seed in the 9-16 bracket!
Justin Kronauge was also chosen at large for the field of 64.
Justin and Steven will represent tOSU in the NCAA doubles championship.
If history repeats itself we will see that Brian, Steven and Justin have the ability to raise the level of their game and excel at these kinds of major events.
Go Bucks!

Just like at March madness, the round of 16 tourney tennis buzz focuses on which lower seeded teams upset favorites to get past the regionals.
Last year Oklahoma State was the big surprise.
This year, three teams which were lower ranked and unseeded pulled huge upsets in the 2nd round. Advancing to Texas A & M are Miami, Wake Forest, and Boise State.
Each of these teams pulled upsets against favored opponents and they all had one thing in common . . .

They upset seeded teams from the conference that received the most seeds to the NCAA tourney. . .

Now if this was a sport like football or basketball, no doubt the Entertainment and sports programming networks would be all over how overrated this conference is in the eyes of the public, but since this is the ITA, not much publicity. . .

The upsets came against seeded and ITA ranked teams from the mighty, . . . .

SEC, Gone home now are #14 Alabama, #11 Kentucky, and #10 Florida.

Well, it looks like Ty got his wish by being ranked #3. I don't thing Boise State will be much of a match even though I see they have one of the better singles players in the country. If everything holds true to format, Baylor will be good competition and if we can get past them and looks like we will play a very well rounded Old Miss team. At least we are not on the same half of the bracket as Virginia and Georgia which I think is good.

Now my question for Mr. Tennis:) is in the NCAA's do they still play 6 singles and 3 doubles matches:huh: and are doubles and singles matches played simultaneously or can certain players double up and play both singles and doubles. I have also been meaning to ask during the regular season can coaches sandbag and move some of their better players down to lower seeding in a match to almost guarantee a victory or is there too much honor amongst coaches to do that.

Sorry if this post is 'old news'. Saw the Big Ten championships on B10 channel against Illinois, and was mightily impressed with the Buckeyes (first time to see all year). They were 'handling' the Illini in all six singles matches when I got a 'honey do' and had to leave. The player that looked to be struggling the most was the #1 (who's ranked #3!), so that speaks tons about the depth of the tennis team. It also looked like a 'smash' against X on Friday (I saw the replay of the B10's on Sat).

Great go guys, and keep it rolling. PS, like the matching black t-shirts as uni's.

I noticed that our #1 singles player, Bryan Koniecko, also lost in the Big 10 championship match against TSUN and was wondering if Mr. Tennis had any insight on to what might be going on with Bryan.

Blue courts are pretty ugly but considering where they were:tongue2:

Actually they have 3 very strong single's players (top 100) at #1, #2 and #3. They also have a very strong double's team. After losing to Alabama 4-0 in March, the Broncos came back to beat Alabama in the regionals at Bama. At this stage in the tourney anything can happen as it did to Florida, Bama, and Kentucky.

If everything holds true to format, Baylor will be good competition and if we can get past them and looks like we will play a very well rounded Old Miss team.
We did beat Baylor in a tough match earlier at Baylor, and will potentially face the Old Miss team that got "weathered out" because of a power failure in Columbus.
At least we are not on the same half of the bracket as Virginia and Georgia which I think is good.
Me too!

Now my question for Mr. Tennis:) is in the NCAA's do they still play 6 singles and 3 doubles matches:huh: and are doubles and singles matches played simultaneously or can certain players double up and play both singles and doubles.

NCAA's will play 3 doubles matches and when finished play 6 singles. Athletes may compete in both.

I have also been meaning to ask during the regular season can coaches sandbag and move some of their better players down to lower seeding in a match to almost guarantee a victory or is there too much honor amongst coaches to do that.
Sandbagging is legal, but if coaches do it blatently there are some countermeasures that are deployed to minimize the impact. :wink2:

Hope that helps a litl.

Men's tennis: Buchanan settles in with Buckeyes

Chase Buchanan has rarely been intimidated on the tennis court. Before he could shave, the New Albany native was playing against the best 16-year-olds in the world. When he turned 16, he was entering professional tournaments as an amateur.

So, Buchanan, who is now 17 and was the nation's top tennis recruit this season, didn't worry when he began playing for No. 3 Ohio State in March after graduating from high school early.

But the jump from junior tennis to college tennis can be steep. The game becomes quicker and more powerful. Buchanan found out when he started 1-4.

"The first few (matches) were tough because I hadn't been playing (because of injury), then I was just getting adjusted to the situation and how people play," he said. "Now it's a lot better."

Buchanan's struggles didn't last long. He has not lost a set in winning nine consecutive matches.

He will man the No. 6 singles spot when Ohio State (33-1) plays Boise State in the third round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday at Texas A&M. The tournament runs through next Tuesday. The Buckeyes advanced by winning two home matches last weekend.

Cont'd ...
