Men's tennis: Heat could cool off OSU's aspirations
Thursday, May 14, 2009 3:20 AM
By Jeremy McLaughlin

Ohio State isn't worried how it will perform in the heat of the moment during the third round of the NCAA men's tennis championship. The Buckeyes are making their fourth consecutive appearance and have beaten nearly every top team in the country.

It's the heat that has coach Ty Tucker worried.

Third-seeded Ohio State (33-1) will play Boise State at 4 p.m. today in College Station, Texas. The forecast is 90 degrees and sunny. Similar weather is expected throughout the tournament, which concludes Tuesday.

"If you get challenged in (the third round) and don't put a team out in two or 2 1/2 hours, it takes a toll on these guys' bodies if we are out there for four or five hours on a 90-degree day," Tucker said. "It's one of the conditions we have to deal with.

"We try to work as hard as we can and put our time in on the court to make sure we are in the best possible shape, but sometimes it's hard to simulate 90-degree days when it's 55, 60 degrees outside (in Columbus)."

Fatigue from the heat has been one reason the Buckeyes have not been able to get past the quarterfinal round the past three years, even though they've been a high seed.

But if Ohio State can win quickly today, it appears to have the talent to win the championship. Its top three players are returning All-Americans. Matt Allare, who has won 28 consecutive matches, and 17-year-old freshman Chase Buchanan, the nation's top recruit who joined the team in March, solidify the bottom of the lineup.

"Last year we were still a little bit young, but this year we've got two seniors and a junior at the top," said senior Bryan Koniecko, the No. 1 singles player. "We've got a make a team play very well to beat us, and I think if we are on top of our game, that's going to be difficult for someone to do."

Senior Steven Moneke was the man, he clinched the fourth and final point with a straight set victory at #2 singles. He earlier partnered with Chase Buchanan to secure the double's point with a victory at #2 doubles.

QUOTES:
Ohio State Head Coach Ty Tucker
?I thought we played pretty good. The one thing about it is we?ve been here for the past two days and it?s probably been 30 mph winds. But today it was 6-8 mph winds; it was nice. It felt good out there. Hopefully that?s the kind of weather that can stay up because I think that gives you a better chance to see some better tennis. But that wind is going to blow and it?s going to hit 25-30 mph at some point during this tournament if you keep staying in. I was proud of the way the guys fought out there today and the way we were about to get the break in the second doubles match to secure the doubles point. Once we get that doubles point we are pretty tough to beat. One through six in the lineup, we?ve never had a team that?s this capable, and we look forward to the challenge of playing Baylor, 80 miles down the road and probably the hottest team in the country for the last two months. We look forward to getting out there to take our shots, but we definitely know the toughest match we have to play in the past two or three months is staring us in the face.?

Boise State Head Coach Greg Patton
?. . . they (OSU) jumped out and won the first set on five of the six singles and were in a tiebreaker on the other. That has never happened to us this year. That just shows how good they are.

?We like being at the net, but they were just better at the baseline, ripping at us at the net. I felt probably more confident going into the doubles against Ohio State than I have been against most schools because I knew that they were unorthodox and I thought we were ready for them. But they just do what they do so well and they just executed so well.

Next up for the Buckeyes is Baylor on Saturday 5pm. :oh:

Correction from the last post, Moneke and Novak won the #2 doubles match that sealed the point.
From the official site a piece of information that is critical motivation for the Buckeyes--
MTEN: No. 3-Seed Buckeyes Advance to Quarterfinals at the 2009 NCAA Championships - The Ohio State Buckeyes Official Athletics Site - OhioStateBuckeyes.com

The Buckeyes now move on to the quarterfinals for the fourth-consecutive season to take on No. 6-seed Baylor at 5 p.m. ET Saturday at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. . .

Under current head coach Ty Tucker, Ohio State is now 20-9 overall in the NCAA play advancing as far as the quarterfinals in 2004, ?06, ?07, ?08 and now ?09. . .
The OSU team has advanced to the quarterfinals (elite 8) four straight years and 5 out of the last 6, but has never made it to the semis.
March 1, the Buckeyes defeated the Baylor Bears by a 7-0 score at Columbus.
We really need a repeat of that earlier victory over the #6 seed to break that quarterfinals barrier and establish a new benchmark.

The NCAA quarterfinals have been delayed be a rain storm.
Projected start time is 5:30 cdt, 6:30 est.
However the first 2 quarterfinal matches were interrupted in the early stages and will need to be completed before tOSU vs. Baylor.

The silver lining of the storm cloud is that the rain has cooled some oppresive heat and the temperatures have dropped to 65 degrees.

Watch it live on the link.

[xrayrandy] Lucky for the Buckeyes, they would have melted in the Texas heat. [/xrayrandy]
