The No. 2 Ohio State men?s tennis team (12-1) returns home this weekend to host No. 7 Kentucky (10-2) at 4 p.m. Saturday and No. 17 North Carolina (3-3) at 5 p.m. Sunday at the Varsity Tennis Center. The match vs. the Wildcats will take place exactly one week from the teams? matchup this past Saturday in the ITA Team Indoor Championship quarterfinal, where Ohio State was as a 4-3 winner. . .

Wildcat Watch
Kentucky comes to Columbus with a 10-2 overall record, having lost its last two matches. The first loss of the season for the Wildcats was against Ohio State in the quarterfinals of the ITA National Team Indoors Championship. The other loss was also during the tournament, falling to No. 9 Stanford 4-1.
Besides the Ohio State loss, the Wildcats are 2-0 vs. the Big Ten, with a 6-1 win vs. Michigan State and a 7-0 victory against Indiana. Kentucky also has defeated No. 19 Tulsa 4-1, No. 13 Pepperdine 4-2 and No. 29 Notre Dame 4-3.
The Wildcats have six players ranked in the latest ITA singles rankings, including three players in the Top 20. Senior Eric Quigley is the top-ranked Wildcat at No. 6, followed by junior Anthony Rossi at No. 13 and senior Alex Musialek at No. 20. Three sophomores in Tom Jomby (No. 79), Alejandro Gomez (No. 87) and Panav Jha (No. 119) round out the rankings for Kentucky. . .

Scouting the Tar Heels
North Carolina will be making its third road trip of the season having only played six matches so far this year. They have split those matches, currently posting a 3-3 record. The wins have come against No. 19 Tulsa, No. 18 Illinois and Navy. The three losses have been to No. 9 Stanford, No. 14 Auburn and No. 11 Texas. Ohio State will be North Carolina?s sixth ranked opponent in seven matches.
The Tar Heels are led by five seniors ?Cameron Ahari, Brennan Boyajian, Joey Burkhardt, Zach Hunter and Alex Rafiee. Juniors Jose Hernanzez, Taylor Meyer and William Parker also contribute to head coach Sam Paul?s team. . . .
Dominant in Columbus
The Buckeyes have won a school-record 135 consecutive home matches, including a 7-0 start this season. The streak dates back to the 2002-03 season. So far this season, Ohio State is 4-0 vs. ITA Top 75 teams (No. 44 Cornell, No. 16 Mississippi State, No. 29 Indiana and No. 12 Pepperdine ). In the Big Ten, no other team in any sport has won as many consecutive contests at home than the Buckeyes.
It has been nearly 3,250 days since the Buckeyes last lost a home match. The home win streak began April 6, 2003 with a 5-2 triumph over Purdue.
Strong Schedule
Ohio State will endure a demanding schedule in the spring, both in non-conference and conference play. The Scarlet and Gray have 12 consecutive matches against teams ranked in the initial ITA Top 75 poll that started with Mississippi State (No. 16) and Pepperdine (12). It continued at Louisville (30) and Michigan State (53) in early February. The Buckeyes met four Top 14 opponents at the ITA National Indoors Championship in Charlottesville, Va., including the Top 2 teams in the country in No. 1 USC and No. 2 Virginia. Ohio State will add to the list this weekend when it meets No. 6 Kentucky and No. 17 North Carolina. The Scarlet and Gray then will travel to Notre Dame (28) March 3 and face Texas A&M (11) at home March 9.
In total, 20 of Ohio State's 25 spring opponents finished ranked in the ITA Top 75 last season, including 13 in the Top 35. Georgia, Kentucky and Texas A&M all finished in the Top 10. All nine road opponents concluded the 2010-11 campaign with a spot in the ITA standings.

Fans can monitor action Saturday and Sunday through livestats.
Also just noticed an addition to the OSU Tennis website --
a new live video feed!

This fan will definitely be checking out this new feature this weekend.

As they did last Saturday at the ITA national Indoor Tournament in Virginia, the Buckeye men's tennis team will have their hands full today vs. the Kentucky Wildcats.
Last time out the OSU squad was able to squeeze out a 4-3 victory thanks to the improved performance of the double's teams and the stellar play from the lower part of the lineup--Van Engelen, McCarthy, and Connor Smith.
The Buckeyes cannot afford to surrender the double's point today and must again rely heavily on the lower half of the lineup to carry them to a victory against one of the most impressive single's lineups in the NCAA.
In fact only USC and Kentucky have 6 players ranked in the top 125 by the ITA. Buckeyes boast 5, but Kentucky has 3 ranked in the top 20!
Last time out against Kentucky, those top 3 UK Wildcats demonstrated their prowess by taking out the top 3 from OSU.
Today assuming Coach Tucker employs the same lineup, at first single's. #18 Buchanan will again face ITA #5 Eric Quigley. Advantage Kentucky, but Chase has been playing well and home court advantage could factor into a potential upset.
At second single's ITA #12 Blaz Rola lost last week to #13 Anthony Rossi of UK. After that loss Blaz went on to record two huge victories vs. UVa and USC. I am hoping that this defeat to Rossi stings enough for Rola to elevate his game enough to capture a victory today.
At third single's last week UK senior Alex Musaliek showed why he was ranked #20 in the ITA. He handled OSU's Peter Kobelt fairly easily. I don't anticipate that things would change today, although after the UK defeat Kobe gave one of his best performances ever with a win against the #1 ITA ranked player Mitchel Frank from Virginia.
Last Saturday vs. UK the bottom of the Buckeye lineup showed up strong. They will need to perform well again today for OSU to notch another W against the Wildcats.
At fourth singles, Ilie Van Engelen ranked #99 by ITA will face #79 Jomby of UK.
At fifth singles, #65 McCarthy squares off vs. #87 Gomez.
At sixth single's #107 Connor Smith matches up with #119 Jha of UK.

Gracelhink predicts: OSU claims the double's point and gets victories at #2, 4, 5 and 6 singles, to post a 5-2 win over the Wildcats in Columbus.

Buckeye fans can monitor the score online through Live match scoring.
And the new feature--Live video Feed.
It is now possible to watch the tennis action live from each of the 6 courts at the Varsity Indoor Tennis center live during matches.
Talk about overdose of tennis! I was able to check out some of the Live video feed from yesterday's OSU women's match. Unfortunately I did not have a strong connection/signal--the picture was clear but the stream was choppy.
UK match starts at 4 pm.
Go Bucks!

ITA announced their all tournament team from last weekend's National Indoor tournament at UVa.
Most outstanding player was USC's Steve Johnson, but three Buckeyes were named for honors and included on the all tournament team.
Blaz Rola was selected at #2 singles. His two victories over UVa and USC earned him honors for the all tournament team.
Connor Smith and Peter Kobelt were also selected as the #3 doubles pair.

Link

. . . Johnson is joined on the ITA All-Tournament Team by the following players and doubles tandems:
Singles
No. 1 ? Steve Johnson, USC
No. 2 ? Blaz Rola, Ohio State
No. 3 ? Daniel Nguyen, USC
No. 4 ? Emilio Gomez, USC
No. 5 ? Yannick Hanfmann, USC
No. 6 ? Nathan Pasha, Georgia

Doubles
No. 1 ? Bradley Klahn/Ryan Thacher, Stanford
No. 2 ? Daniel Nguyen/Ray Sarmiento, USC
No. 3 ? Peter Kobelt/Connor Smith, Ohio State

This is the fifth annual ITA National Men's Team Indoor All-Tournament Team. Voters included the head coaches from the 16 participating teams. This marks the first year that a University of Virginia player was not named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament. Somdev Devvarman was honored with the team tournament's first ever top individual award in 2008. Sanam Singh (2009), Michael Shabaz (2010), and Alex Domijan (2011) also earned Most Outstanding Player for the Cavaliers.

Thank you Buckeyeintn for the updates from tonight's match.:oh:

Just got back from a rocking Varsity Indoor center where I witnessed the Buckeyes extend the longest home court win streak in the NCAA to 136 matches!!!
IMHO of all the teams that will be visiting Columbus in 2012, I believed this Kentucky team had the strongest possiblity of ending that streak.

OSU's Chase Buchanan and Eric Quigley the #5 ITA ranked player from UK treated fans to a wonderful display of exceptional tennis ont the first court. Buchanan battled back from a break down at 2-4 to get to a tie breaker. With the breaker score tied at 13 all, Chase put back to back points together to claim the first set 15-13. Unfortunately in the OSU victory, the fourth OSU point ended the match and first singles was halted before its natural conclusion.
Rola at second singles appears to have elevated his game tonight as well. Revenge was especially sweet vs. #20 ITA ranked Museliak who had taken out Rola at the ITA national Indoor Tournament.
And Devin McCarthy was firing winners from the baseline and breaking serve at will against a very strong opponent #57 ranked Gomez.
Connor Smith has been a strong addition to the Buckeye lineup this year and is dominating the opposition at sixth singles and when paired with Kobelt at 3rd doubles.
This recap of the Buckeye victory is from the Official OSU tennis site.

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? The second-ranked Ohio State men?s tennis team picked up its 13th victory of the season (13-1) after defeating No. 7 Kentucky (10-3) 4-0 Saturday at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Buckeyes have now been responsible for two of the Wildcats? three losses after a hard fought 4-3 triumph during the quarterfinals of the 2012 ITA Men?s National Team Indoors Championship Feb. 18 in Charlottesville, Va.

Devin McCarthy earned the match-winning fourth point on court four with a 6-2, 6-4 win over No. 57 Alejandro Gomez. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native moves to 13-5 overall in only his second match at No. 4 singles this season.
Ohio State moves to 13-11 all-time vs. the Wildcats. Including both wins this season, the Buckeyes have been victorious in 10-consecutive matches vs. Kentucky dating back to the 2000-01 season.

In doubles, Peter Kobelt and Connor Smith remained undefeated in the spring after an 8-6 victory on court three against Tom Jomby and Anthony Rossi. Smith and Kobelt are 11-0 in the spring when teamed up in doubles, including a 7-0 mark on court three.
Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola, the top-ranked pair in the nation, won 8-5 on court one over Eric Quigley and Panav Jha. The Buckeye tandem moved to 17-2, including marks of 8-2 in the spring and 7-1 vs. nationally-ranked opponents. It was the second time in the last week Rola and Buchanan defeated Quigley and Jha. The Ohio State duo downed the Wildcat pair 8-5 Feb. 18 to win the first doubles match of the National Indoors quarterfinal.

Smith gave Ohio State a 2-0 lead after a 6-4, 6-0 victory on court six against Grant Roberts. The Tampa, Fla., native moves to 11-0 in dual singles action with the straight-set victory.

Rola, the nation?s 12th-ranked player, extended the Scarlet and Gray?s lead to 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Alex Musialek, the 20th-ranked singles player in the country. The win avenged a 6-2, 6-4 loss to Musialek during the National Indoors quarterfinals. The Big Ten Athlete of the Week now stands at 17-3 overall, including an 8-1 mark at the No. 2 position. He moves to 8-2 against nationally-ranked opponents.

Moments later, McCarthy followed Rola?s victory with his ninth dual win of the season on court four for the win.

As the second-ranked team nationally, Ohio State is an outstanding 55-4. The match against Kentucky was the first time the Buckeyes have played as the No. 2 team. They had been ranked No. 3 up until the latest ITA team rankings were released Wednesday.
The Buckeyes are back in action Sunday afternoon when they welcome No. 17 North Carolina to the Varsity Tennis Center. The match will begin at 5 p.m.

Break Points:

The Buckeyes have won all 13 doubles points this season.

Ohio State currently holds a home win streak of 136 matches, the longest active streak in the nation.

The Buckeyes have been ranked in the ITA Top 10 for 176 consecutive matches (beginning March 7, 2006).

Ohio State has won 80 consecutive B1G conference matches.

Re: Kentucky. At the ITA last weekend in their match with Ohio State, there were close to 15 overrules by the chair against Kentucky. I guess yesterday the boys from the bluegrass state got their eyes back so the chair did not have to overrule them at all.

In addition, I guess there was some commotion in the 4th singles match when McCarthy's opponent was complaining about his back and delayed the match for a while. Perhaps Mr. Tennis can elaborate on this since he was at the match.

I noticed the delay at fourth singles, don't know what to say other than the match was halted for a while in the first set and delayed at the changeover between sets. I assumed it was for an injury because the UK player left the court.
Was also surprised to see McCarthy playing fourth singles yesterday (rather than VanEngelen), but then thought with the history from last Saturday and the ITA, Coach Tucker possibly bumped Devin so that Ilie would not have to relive the experience/frustration of bad calls.
Talked with one of the match officials yesterday who said that while it is not rare for umpires to overrule in matches, he had never had to apply the 3rd overrule loss of point before.
Go Bucks!
