Ohio State Men's Tennis (2014/2019/2024 ITA Indoor National Champs, 17 Straight B1G Titles)

Would have loved to recap the weekend event with
"Buckeyes prevail in National Indoor final and capture their first ever ITA championship in tennis."
but that headline was seemingly just not meant to be.
however:
* OSU Dubs teams have improved exponentially over years past, they came through today with a dominant performance against a team that had not lost a double's point all year.
* Buchanan raised his game another level, played his heart out, but Johnson showed the reason he is the NCAA defending champion.
* What can you say about Sophomore Blaz Rola, other than he is Mr. Clutch. Should be selected to the all tournament team.
* Peter Kobelt elevated his game to stratospheric levels on Sunday to get the Bucks into the final, giving the only defeat to the NCAA's #1 ranked player from UVa, but Monday Peter came back to earth.
* VanEngelen played his heart out but just ran into better competition.
* Smith was solid, a winner all weekend and a great addition this year to the team. His victory on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday should earn him a place on the all tournament team as well.
* It all came down to fifth singles for the title and this day Hanfmann played more clutch points and served a little better than Devin McCarthy to capture the prize.

This recap of the action was posted on the ITA official tournament site .

The matchup may not have been as expected, but the quality of play was everything anticipated and more on Monday in the championship match of the 2012 ITA National Men?s Team Indoor Championship, host by the University of Virginia at the Boar?s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va. The top-seeded USC Trojans were able to overcome dropping the doubles point for the first time all season, rebounding to defeat the third-seeded Ohio State Buckeyes in a 4-3 thriller.

?We just got punched in the face in doubles,? USC head coach Peter Smith stated. ?I told them if you get punched in the face, you better get up and punch back. We have a couple of veterans that we knew we could count on, and I thought we had a good game plan in singles. It was good to see the team compete as hard as they did. The guys came out and did the things we talked about, which was good to see.?

Ohio State?s Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola, the top-ranked doubles pair in the Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings, got out to a quick start against No. 26 Steve Johnson and Yannick Hanfmann. Buchanan and Rola earned an early break for a 3-1 lead, eventually stretching their advantage out to 6-2. The Trojan tandem was able to get one of the breaks back, but the deficit was too much to overcome. Rola served out the 8-5 victory to get the Buckeyes off to a solid start.
The other two doubles matches were much tighter, but it was Ohio State that was able to play the key points better. . .
the overall match score was even at 3-3.

With all other courts completed, all eyes turned to the three-set match taking place at the fifth position. Ohio State?s Devin McCarthy faced little resistance in taking the first set 6-3 against USC?s Yannick Hanfmann, but the Trojan rookie took a break lead early in the second. Hanfmann?s big serve was all he needed to take the second set by a score of 6-3. With the championship to be decided by the third and final set, both players started out well on serve. That all changed at 2-2, when Hanfmann was able to earn a break. Hanfmann was able to rely on his big serve to pull him out of any danger in his remaining service games, not giving McCarthy an opportunity to even the score. The USC freshman boomed a service winner on match point to clinch the championship with his 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 triumph.

Wow, the BP tennis thread jumped from all the traffic today, may I share a brief thanks for all the BP faithful and their support of the OSU tennis program.

Buckeye supporters are never Bandwagonners in my book, they bleed scarlet and gray and get passionate whenever athletes excel or need the encouragement of loyal friends.

I need to apologize because my OCD gets exposed in my enthusiastic appreciation of this special group of student athletes, tennis coaching staff and the joy I get from all things Buckeye. Sorry for the information overload I dump into these forums.

With that confessed,
May i go OCD again and proclaim,
What a wonderful ride this weekend Tennis team.
Looking forward to a 7th consecutive B1G title,
7th consecutive conference tournament championship
and a deep run into the NCAA championship in May.

Go Bucks!:oh:

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread. I was able to follow the doubles point action while I changed planes in KC, but this thread allowed me to get a good idea of how close things were by reading it when I got to my hotel.
Echo this ! Thanks for keeping us up to date!

Wanted to include 3 other things I am looking forward to this year from the Buckeyes:

1. Continuing their top 10 ITA ranking beyond the current mark of 175 consecutive matches.
OSU has been ranked in the Top 10 by the ITA/NCAA since March 7, 2006. If OSU can make a run into the NCAA tournament that top 10 streak could potentially hit 200 straight matches.

2. Extending their consecutive home match win streak beyond the present 135 mark!
With 13 more home matches on the Buckeye schedule this year, the number could rise to 148!
Kentucky and North Carolina might have something to say about that this weekend and Texas A & M and Illinois will be seeking upsets in March.
The Buckeyes have not lost at home since 2003.
No Big Ten team in any sport has approached OsU Men's tennis success in the number of consecutive home wins.

3. Extending their current Big Ten consecutive match win streak past the current 80 mark. They could possibly reach 93 with 10 B1G regular season and 3 tournament matches. Buckeyes have not lost a Big Ten match since 2005.

The recap of the thriller from the ITA national indoor tournament yesterday from
the official OSU tennis Site.

The third-ranked Ohio State men?s tennis team lost to No. 1 USC 4-3 in the championship match of the 2012 ITA National Team Indoor Championship Monday. It was the Buckeyes? first loss of the season (12-1). The prestigious event was held at Boar?s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va. Ohio State will return to action this weekend, hosting No. 6 Kentucky at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Varsity Tennis Center. The match vs. the Wildcats will take place exactly one week from the teams? matchup this past Saturday in the ITA Team Indoor Championship quarterfinal. The following day, Sunday, Feb. 26, the Buckeyes will host No. 17 North Carolina at 5 p.m. in the VTC.
With Ohio State and Virginia tied 3-3, all eyes turned to court No. 5 where Buckeye Devin McCarthy, the 65th-ranked player nationally, was battling No. 36 Yannick Hanfmann for the team title. McCarthy won the first set 6-3 before losing the next two 6-3, 6-4.
Ohio State won its 13th doubles point in as many matches for the year. Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola, the top-ranked duo nationally, beat Steve Johnson and Hanfmann, the 28th-ranked tandem in the country, on court one 8-5.
Peter Kobelt and Connor Smith downed Emilio Gomez and Roberto Quiroz 9-8, winning the tiebreaker by a 7-4 score. It was their second doubles tiebreaker win in as many days on court three.
The Trojans took a 2-1 lead after No. 14 Daniel Nguyen defeated Kobelt on court three 6-1, 6-2 and Gomez beat Ille Van Engelen 6-3, 6-4 on court four.
Smith would even it at 2-2 after he won his sixth match of the tournament, beating Eric Johnson 6-3, 7-6.

Johnson, ranked 11th nationally, would put USC back in the lead with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Buchanan at the No. 1 position, while Rola would even the match once again with a convincing 7-5, 6-3 win over No. 18 Ray Sarmiento.

Hanfmann would defeat McCarthy a little while after to win it for the Trojans.
As the third-ranked team nationally, Ohio State is 74-3.
With the loss, the Buckeyes are 15-11 all-time in the tournament. This season is Ohio State?s 12th-consecutive participating in the event. Im not going to lie though, it'd be nice to see our sports programs start to win some actual championships outside the B1G!

I agree. Our collection of runner-up trophies is getting a little ridiculous. It'd be nice to see tennis get over the hump this season.
