Ohio State Men's Tennis (2014/2019/2024 ITA Indoor National Champs, 17 Straight B1G Titles)

Interesting to note that Tucker is trying to find which doubles combo will give Ohio State the best chance of getting that crucial beginning one point. Smith/Kobelt at #3 doubles is pretty formidable along with Buchanan/Rola being almost unbeatable at #1. It will interesting to see if Tucker stays with these pairings or does some more "playing around".

Yes this is an intriguing conundrum.
When the Bucks go to the ITA indoors mid February, the double's point will be heavily prized.
Your assessment is spot on with:
Anchors at the top of the lineup, Buchanan-Rola.
The emergence of a quality #2, McCarthy - Van Engelen (ITA #15 raniking) must make Coach Ty smile.
#3 pair of Smith and Kobe will dominate, and secure a lot of easy double's points.

The third-ranked Ohio State men?s tennis team (5-0) downed No. 29 Indiana (3-2) 4-0 Sunday in the championship match of the 2012 ITA Kick-Off Weekend at the Varsity Tennis Center in Columbus. With the victory, the Buckeyes will be one of 16 teams to compete at the 2012 ITA National Team Indoor Championship Feb. 17-20 in Charlottesville, Va. The University of Virginia will serve as hosts.
It is the sixth-consecutive season the Buckeyes have advanced to the National Indoors under head coach Ty Tucker.
Ille Van Engelen clinched the victory for Ohio State for the second-consecutive match after a 6-1, 7-6 win on court five vs. Indiana?s Alastair Barnes. Van Engelen is 5-0 on the season in singles matches.
The Buckeyes beat No. 44 Cornell 5-1 and the Hoosiers defeated No. 28 Notre Dame 4-1 Saturday in the first round of the tournament in order to reach the title match.
Ohio State moves to 44-39 all-time against Indiana. Under Tucker?s tutelage, the Buckeyes are 12-2 vs. their Big Ten foe, with all 12 victories occurring consecutively dating back to the 2000-01 season.
In doubles, Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola, the nation?s top-seeded pair, were the first duo to finish, wrapping up an 8-3 victory over Indiana?s Isade Juneau and Jeremy Langer. The Buckeyes went on to grab the doubles point after 15th-ranked Devin McCarthy and Ille Van Engelen defeated Josh MacTaggart and Barnes 8-2.
With the win against the Hoosiers, the Buckeyes have now won 133 consecutive matches in Columbus, dating back to the 2002-03 season. The netters also boast an impressive 203-13 record since the 2005-06 season.

Following a nonconference match vs. Toledo Sunday night at 6 p.m., the Buckeyes continue their demanding spring slate at 6 p.m., Feb. 3 against No. 12 Pepperdine at the Varsity Tennis Center.

Just to demonstrate the leverage of Litl's influence, the championship match OSU vs. Indiana started later than 1 pm, which allowed this reporter to attend the destruction of TSUN at the Schott and make it to the Varsity Indoor Tennis Center by 3:15 pm, in time for the atart of the single's play and to personally witness the massacre of the Hoosiers. Was hoping to redeem the questionable loyalty to the tennis program.:highfive:
With the win over Indiana, OSU has a 79 match Big 10 winning streak.

Buckeyes also defeated Toledo this evening by a 4-0 score to extend their home win streak to 134.

Not to steal Mr. Tennis' thunder but below is a recap of the Toledo massacre with a few tidbits.

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? The third-ranked Ohio State men?s tennis team (6-0) picked up its sixth win of its spring schedule after defeating Toledo 4-0 Sunday night at the Varsity Indoor Tennis Center. It was the Buckeyes? second victory of the day after defeating No. 29 Indiana 4-0 earlier in the evening during the 2012 ITA Kick-Off Weekend championship.
Hunter Callahan defeated Ben Brocker of Toledo 6-2, 6-1 to capture the match-winning fourth point.

Ohio State moves to 28-2 all-time against Toledo. Since Ty Tucker took over the reins of the Buckeye program, Ohio State is 12-0 vs. its in-state foe.

During doubles competition, Steven Williams and Kevin Metkaquickly downed the Rocket tandem of Grant Adams and Garrett Cona 8-0. Chase Buchanan and Peter Kobelt claimed the doubles point for the home team after an 8-2 victory on court one against Bryant Dudzik and Nicholas Wong.

Kobelt also was quick to finish his singles bout, capping a 6-2, 6-1 decision on court two against Adams to give the Buckeyes a commanding 2-0 lead. Blaz Rola, the eighth-ranked player nationally, increased the lead to three, after a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 1. Callahan then followed with his straight-set win to complete the match.

With the win against the Rockets, the Buckeyes have now won 134 consecutive matches in Columbus, dating back to the 2002-03 season. As the third-ranked team nationally, Ohio State is an outstanding 68-2.

The Buckeyes continue their demanding spring slate at 6 p.m., Feb. 3 against No. 12 Pepperdine at the Varsity Tennis Center.

Break Points:
  • The Buckeyes have won 12 consecutive matches vs. the Rockets, all under the direction of Ty Tucker. They are 28-2 all-time vs. Toledo.
  • As the No. 3 ranked team nationally, Ohio State is 68-2.
  • Ohio State has won 134 consecutive home matches, dating back to the 2002-03 season.
  • The Buckeyes have been victorious in 23 of their previous 24 matches (the only loss occurred in the 2011 NCAA semifinals vs. No. 1 Virginia).
  • Since 2001, Ohio State is 251-36 when ranked in the ITA Top 25. That mark improves to 204-13 from the 2005-06 season onward.
  • The Buckeyes have been ranked in the ITA Top 10 for 168-consecutive matches (beginning March 7, 2006).
  • Ohio State has won 79 consecutive Big Ten Conference matches.

I know that Mr. Tennis is going to mention that up next the Buckeyes will take on a very formidable Pepperdine team. Don't be fooled. They probably might win one point:lol:

For the tennis buffs, it Is interesting to note that Coach Tucker has really not settled on a #1 doubles team. He has been pairing Buchanan and Rola or sometimes he will pair Kobelt with Buchanan at #1 doubles. I would think that sooner or later they will have to make a determination who is best doubles teams are that will get the team off on a good start winning that valuable doubles point. I am sure that Mr. Tennis will be able to give some insight into Coach Tucker's thinking regarding the doubles teams:confused:

Buckeyes next competition is #12 ranked Pepperdine. And they really are as Litlbuck described, "very formidable!"
They won their ITA kickoff region defeating an SEC powerhouse Vanderbilt by a 7-0 score in the finals.
While I won't project that Buckeyes will be lucky to get a point, Pepperdine will present a strong challenge to the Buckeyes 134 match home win streak.
Pepperdine boasts 3 top 50 ITA ranked single's players, (compared to 2 for the Bucks). #21 Sebastion Fanselow, #35 Finn Tearney, and #49 Mousheq Havhannisyan give a solid 1,2,3, and their #4 player Lompart is also very strong.

The OSU single's lineup Sunday had Rola at #1, then Buchanan, Vick, Kobelt, Van Engelen, and Smith.
When the match was called vs. Indiana, Rola had lost his first set and was on serve but struggling in the second set.
Buchanan was up a set, a break, and ready to serve out the match.
Vick was down a set and a break in the 2nd.
Two points of vulnerability and my concern. . .
1. Rola is not playing as well indoors as he did earlier on the USTA future's clay.
2. #3 singles seems to be an area where we will have matchup problems.

Kobelt looked dominant at #4 on Saturday and Sunday. Tucker could move him up in the lineup.
McCarthy was forced to withdraw on Saturday (injury?) and was not in the single's lineup on Sunday.

So re. the match vs. #12 Wave.
Pepperdine double's teams are not ranked, so Buckeyes should claim the point, though in an 8 point pro set anything can happen.
Re. the best lineup in double's for Coach Tucker, the emergence of the solid play of McCarthy and Van Engelen at #2 has afforded Ty the option to keep Rola-Buchanan together at the top. Coach Tucker has experimented with some other lineup options but when the matches matter I think we can expect to see Rola-Buchanan in the anchor position.
Connor Smith and Peter Kobelt are the best #3 tandem in the NCAA's period!!!!
Single's could be nailbiter tough.
Would love to see #8 Rola get real consistent and begin to dominate again vs. #35 Tearney.
Buchanan at #28 Ita ranking will have his hands full with #21 Fanselow.
Bucks will be fortunate to win at #3.
Buckeyes will need to win 2 out of 3 at #4, #5, and #6.

I will predict the final score to be 5-2 in favor of the good guys.

No. 3 Ohio State Hosts No. 12 Pepperdine Friday

Preview of the Showdown at the Varsity Indoor Tennis center Friday.
From the Official OSU tennis site.
LINK

The six-time defending Big Ten champion Ohio State men?s tennis team (6-0) will continue its spring slate at 6 p.m. Friday against No. 12 Pepperdine at the Varsity Indoor Tennis Center. The Buckeyes will look to remain unbeaten and move to 7-0 for the seventh-consecutive season. . .
Pepperdine Waves
The Waves are 3-0 with wins against Loyola Marymount, Cal Poly and Vanderbilt. Pepperdine?s roster is back loaded with upperclassmen, including four seniors and three juniors. The three juniors happen to be the highest ranked players for the Waves in the latest ITA singles poll (Jan. 3). Sebastian Fanselow is ranked No. 21, followed by Finn Tearney at No. 35 and Mousheg Hovhannisyan at No. 49. Pepperdine is one of the rare teams on the Buckeye schedule who has more Top 50 players than Ohio State. Senior Hugh Clarke is ranked No. 106.
Wave?s coach Adam Steinberg is in his 10th season on the west coast. He guided Pepperdine to the 2006 national championship and is close to earning his 200th win as the team?s mentor, having amassed a 197-66 overall record since the 2002-03 season. . .
The newest ITA team rankings were released today and there were no changes among the top 10 in the ITA. Buckeyes remained at #3 after USC and UVA.
Buckeye fans can monitor the action vs. Pepperdine online at Live match updates.

I was wondering if there was an explanation for Buchanan/Rola losing their doubles match or was it just off night for one or both of the guys. I see that the Pepperdine doubles team that they play was unranked. Just curious.

Good catch on the first loss of the 2011-12 season for Buchanan and Rola, -- they were 11-0 together coming into the match.
Buchanan was 17-0 in double's matches overall, Rola was 15-1, with his only loss coming last fall against Buchanan and Kobelt in the finals of the ITA midwest regionals.
Pepperdine #1 double's lack of ranking is a bit deceiving.
Did a little research and only thing I can speculate is that Pepperdine coach has been rotating players for doubles. So no Pepperdine doubles team has enough W's to receive enough points in the ITA ranking standards., They will however, be viable threats when the NCAA tourney comes about.
