Ohio State Men's Tennis (2014/2019/2024 ITA Indoor National Champs, 17 Straight B1G Titles)

I was just about to ask why the difference between the national and regional ranking. I guess you answered that question:wink:

Actually I didn't answer it but the variance between regional and ITA rankings is the difference between a poll/survey of the regional tennis gurus and ITA computer generated rankings.
Regional rankings are probably more predictable, they are derived from a poll of the Midwest coaches et.al. who rank players based on what they have seen, their past performance projected for the upcoming season.
The January ITA national rankings are derived by a computer formula based on the performance of athletes during the abbreviated fall schedule.
There is quite the fuss at USC because last year's NCAA single's champion Steve Johnson was not included among the ITA top 125. Johnson skipped the fall NCAA season to concentrate on the pro satellite tour.
Except for conversation, the preseason tennis rankings are essentially meaningless. As the Winter/Spring seasons progress, the rankings evolve with competition, and they become the basis for seeding in tournament draws.

The ITA also released the preseason rankings for NCAA double's teams and 3 OSU teams were ranked including the #1 team in the nation!

Link

#1 Blaz Rola and Chase Buchanan
#8 Chase Buchanan and Peter Kobelt
#30 Blaz Rola and Connor Smith

:oh:

Somehow I overlooked the #15 ranked OSU double's team of Devin McCarthy and Ilie VanEngelen in the ITA rankings.

They would be the 4th Buckeye team in the ITA double's ranking, the most of any NCAA school!

Edit: It appears that the ITA rankings were revised after the first post.
Kobelt and Buchanan are now #10.
McCarthy and VanEngelen are now #15.

The official site previews the upcoming tennis season.
The Buckeye consecutive home win streak is at 128!
Article spotlights the top two Buckeye single's players.

The 2012 Ohio State men?s tennis team will begin its spring schedule in the same position in the ITA standings as it finished the 2011 campaign. The Buckeyes will open up their season Jan. 18th with a doubleheader against Butler and Xavier as the No. 3 ranked team in the nation in the inaugural 2012 Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings.
In 2011, head coach Ty Tucker guided the Buckeyes to a Big Ten regular season and tournament title for the sixth consecutive season, in addition to an appearance in the NCAA semifinals. It was the fourth-consecutive season Ohio State recorded at least 34 wins, finishing with a 34-3 mark overall and a 13-0 ledger vs. Big Ten opponents.
Ohio State enters 2012 on a 128-match win streak at home. They additionally have been victorious in 56 of their previous 57 road contests. Since the 2005-06 season, the Buckeye netters have an impressive 198-13 record when ranked in the ITA Top 25.
Blaz Rola, a sophomore hailing from Ptuj, Slovenia, will look to build off his rookie season as he enters the singles rankings at No. 7. Rola, a 2011 All-American and ITA National Player to Watch, went an impressive 41-7 in 2011, including marks of 25-4 in the spring, 8-1 in the Big Ten and 17-7 vs. nationally ranked challengers. Rola split the season between the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, posting 10-3 and 15-1 records at both positions, respectively.
Chase Buchanan, a 2011 All-American and two-time defending Big Ten Athlete of the Year, is one of two seniors on the team this season and is polled No. 28. Buchanan was 34-7 overall, including a 29-3 mark in the spring and a perfect 10-0 vs. Big Ten opponents in 2011. The New Albany, Ohio, native was 16-1 at No. 1 singles and 13-2 at No. 2 on the courts. He finished 15-7 vs. ranked opponents. . .

If Buchanan teams up with Rola, I am wondering if there will play Kobelt with Smith or someone else. I have no clue.:io:

Really good observation and question, Litl.
Intriguing options abound for the Bucks doubles strategy.
I'll go on a hunch and say that Coach Tucker will believe his strongest double's lineup will
match Buchanan with Kobelt (dominant at the net and unbreakable on serve).
Second pairing will probably be Rola and Connor Smith (played #1 doubles for FSU last year and was ranked nationally).
At #3 doubles will probably be Ilie VanEngelen and Devin McCarthy. They had a very strong fall season as reflected by their #15 ranking in the initial ITA rankings.
Wildcards to crack the double's lineup are underclassmen like Nelson Vick (RS Soph), Hunter Callahan (RS Fr), and Kevin Metka (RS FR).

Buckeyes were in action at the Plantation futures event, and one Buckeye pulled an upset stunner in the first round.

Chase Buchanan fell victim to a two day, four match marathon qualifying experience and dropped his first round main draw single's match 6-1, 7-5 to USTA veteran and world #488 Andrea Collarini.

Also representing the OSU men's tennis team today was USTA single's qualifier Blaz Rola. His assignment matched him against the #4 seed and #321 USTA ranked Boy Westerhof.
Rola brought his #725 ranking into the match and broke serve late to squeeze out a 7-5 win in the first set.
The second set went to a tie breaker and Rola prevailed with a 7-5 score in the breaker to claim the upset!

Tuesday Results

Next up for Rola is a 2nd round match on Thursday vs. the winner of Nevola (Illinois) and #433 Luncanu.

OSU's Blaz Rola continued his stellar play Thursday at the USTA futures event in Plantation Florida.
Matched against the world's #433 P Luncanu, Rola prevailed by a 6-3, 6-4 score to advance to the quarterfinal.
Blaz will square off Friday against the tournament's #6 seed, and #357 USTA ranked Nicholas Devilder of France.

Today Devilder defeated Rola's nemesis from the fall tour, Jarmere Jenkins of UVa.

Coach Tucker must be thrilled to see Rola's game firing at such a high level. Over the past 5 days, Rola has won 6 straight matches against world caliber opponents.
Would love to see this domination continue indoors this winter, through the kickoff weekend at the end of January and the ITA All-American team tournament in February.

After a strong run in the F1 USTA futures tournament in Plantation FL,
OSU's Blaz Rola dropped a tough 3 setter Friday to the #6 seed Devilder.

Buckeye men's tennis season opener will be next Wednesday, January 18.

Butler and Xavier will travel to the OSU Varsity indoor tennis center for a 10 am, and 6 pm doubleheader.

Great tourney run, get some rest Blaz, and Go Bucks!

No. 3 Buckeyes Open Season vs. Butler, Xavier

The six-time defending Big Ten champion, the Ohio State men?s tennis team will begin its spring campaign with its traditional home doubleheader against Butler and Xavier Wednesday.
The Buckeyes will first take the courts vs. the Bulldogs at 10 a.m., then following a short break will resume action at 6 p.m. vs. the Musketeers. Both contests will be played at the Ohio State University Varsity Indoor Tennis Center (VTC) at 880 W. Henderson Road. . . .

Points of Pride
? The Buckeyes enter the 2012 spring season with 128 consecutive wins at home.
? Ohio State has won 17 of its previous 18 matches, with the only loss coming in the NCAA semifinals to No. 1 Virginia.
? Additionally, the Buckeyes enter the spring winners of 56 of their last 57 road matches (non-tournament).
? Since 2001, Ohio State is 245-36 (.872) when ranked in the ITA Top 25. That mark improves to 198-13 from the 2005-06 season onward.
? Ohio State has been ranked in the ITA Top 10 for 162 consecutive matches (beginning March 7, 2006).
Dominant in Columbus
The Buckeyes have won a school-record 128 consecutive home matches dating back to the 2002-03 season. . .
It has been nearly 3,200 days since the Buckeyes last lost a home match. The home win streak began April 6, 2003 with a 5-2 triumph over Purdue.
Strong Schedule
Ohio State will endure a demanding schedule in the spring, both in non-conference and conference play. Following Xavier and Butler, the Scarlet and Gray will play eight consecutive matches against teams ranked in the initial ITA Top 75 poll. They will welcome Mississippi State (No. 16) Jan. 22 and Pepperdine (12) Feb. 3. The team will travel to Louisville (30) Feb. 9 and Michigan State (53) Feb. 12, before returning to Columbus to meet Kentucky (7) Feb. 25 and North Carolina (20) Feb. 26. The Buckeyes will go to Notre Dame (28) March 3 and face Texas A&M (11) at home March 9.
In total, 19 of Ohio State's 24 spring opponents finished ranked in the ITA Top 75 last season, including 13 in the Top 35. Georgia, Kentucky and Texas A&M all finished in the Top 10. All nine road opponents concluded the 2010-11 campaign with a spot in the ITA standings.
