The Ohio State men?s tennis team continued its domination Sunday at the 2011 USTA/ITA Division I Men?s Midwest Regional Championships. Two Buckeyes will be represented in the singles semifinals, while the doubles final will feature Buckeyes on both sides of the net. The event is taking place at the Varsity Tennis Center and Jesse Owens West Recreation Center in Columbus, Ohio.
Blaz Rola and Chase Buchanan easily won their respective quarterfinal matches in the morning. Rola defeated teammate Ille Van Engelen 6-1, 6-1 and Buchanan downed Nial Fitzgerald of Notre Dame 6-2, 6-2. Rola moves to 5-1 and Buchanan moves to 6-1 in singles main draw matches on the season.
Devin McCarthy fell to Notre Dame?s Casey Watt 7-5, 6-3, while Peter Kobelt lost a hard-fought contest to Evan King of Michigan 7-6, 6-2.
The doubles portion of the regional was loaded with Buckeyes. Buchanan and Smith defeated teammates McCarthy and Van Engelen 8-4 in the semifinals to advance to the championship match Monday. Buchanan and Kobelt will meet the two for an all-Ohio State final after beating Evan King and Shaun Bernstein, 8-5. . . .
