Ohio State Men's Tennis (2014/2019/2024 ITA Indoor National Champs, 17 Straight B1G Titles)

In Friday's double's quarterfinal at 9 am, OSU tandem Rola and Buchanan will face a tough squad from Duke, Cunha and Mengel.
Winners will advance to the semifinal on Saturday.

In the single's portion of the tournament, both Rola and Buchanan will seek to advance to the quarterfinals on Friday.

Blaz Rola will face TSUN's Evan King in the round of 16 at 11:30 am. Rola defeated King at the ITA midwest regional final three weeks ago in Columbus. The winner will play the quarterfinal later Friday afternoon.

In the lower half of the draw, Chase Buchanan's path to the finals became a little easier with the withdrawal of the #2 seed Alex Domijan of UVa.
Buchanan's round of 16 opponent is Haig Schneiderman of Columbia who pulled a minor upset in the first round. Their match is scheduled to begin at 1:30 pm with the quarterfinal also played Friday.

Recap of the first day of the ITA Indoors from the OSU official site

- Blaz Rola and Chase Buchanan, members of the Ohio State men's tennis team, advanced to the doubles quarterfinals of the 2011 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships Thursday. The prestigious event is being held at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.

The Buckeye tandem, who earned the No. 2 seed in the draw, earned a bye in the first round before defeating Matt Siow and Matt Spindler of Princeton 8-5 in the second round. Buchanan and Rola will attempt to advance to the semifinals when they hit the courts against Duke's Henrique Cunha and Chris Mengel Friday. The Blue Devil pair downed John Collins and Maros Horny of Maryland 8-3 to earn the right to meet the Ohio State duo.

Buchanan and Rola clinched the automatic berth with a victory against Georgia Tech's Kevin King and Juan Spir to win the doubles championship at the D'Novo/ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., Oct. 9. King and Spir were the top-seed at the event and currently are the No. 1 seed this week as well.

The two Buckeyes also advanced in the singles portion of the National Indoors championships. Buchanan defeated USC's Ray Sarmiento 6-4, 6-4. The win for Buchanan, the sixth-seed in the tournament, avenged a previous loss against the Trojan, who beat the Buckeye in the singles draw of the NCAA tournament last season in Stanford, Calif.

"I had a better attitude out there," Buchanan said when comparing the two matches, "I was a little more positive, a little more intense and I fought a little better here. That makes a huge difference."

The New Albany, Ohio, native who earned an at-large bid to compete in the event, will meet the winner of Texas A&M's Alexis Klegou and Haig Schneiderman of Columbia Friday.

Rola earned the automatic bid into the singles draw of the tournament following an impressive showing at the 2011 ITA Midwest Regionals in Columbus, Ohio, that culminated with the Ptuj, Slovenia, native capturing his second consecutive regional championship. The sophomore Buckeye and third seed in the bracket handed Pepperdine's Finn Tearney a 6-2, 7-6 (2) loss in the opening round. Rola, who is the reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Year will meet conference foe Evan King of Michigan Friday with a trip to the quarterfinals at stake. Rola defeated King in the Midwest Regional Championships final Oct. 17.

Buchanan and Rola

- Blaz Rola and Chase Buchanan, members of the Ohio State men's tennis team, captured the 2011 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Doubles Championship in stunning form Sunday at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. The Buckeye duo defeated Tulsa's Clifford Marsland and Ashley Watling 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 to win the highly acclaimed title. It was the second-consecutive match the Buckeye duo had to come from behind to win.
Buchanan, a senior, and Rola, a sophomore, were the No. 2 seed in the draw, while the Tulsa tandem was right behind as the third-seeded team.
"It was a great win," Buckeye head coach Ty Tucker said. "Chase and Blaz played well and won their second national event of the season. I think only four or five teams have won both events in the history of college tennis. We are looking forward to getting better and starting the [dual] season in January."
Buchanan and Rola previously won the D'Novo/ITA All-American Doubles Championship Oct. 9 in Tulsa, Okla. They beat Georgia Tech's Kevin King and Juan Spir (the top-seed in the tournament) in the event to earn the automatic bid to compete in the National Indoors this weekend.
Scott Green and Ross Wilson were the last Buckeye team to reach the National Indoors Doubles Championship. The pair defeated Marco Born and Andreas Billjestrom of Middle Tennessee State 9-7 in the 2005 final. Like Buchanan and Rola, Ross and Green were the No. 2 seed in the event. Green and Wilson also won the National Indoors title in 2004, the same season they won the ITA All-American Championship.

Congratulations to Blaz and Chase on an outstanding fall season!
Thank you for representing the Scarlet and Gray with championship diginity and Class!

Preview of the 2012 Buckeye men's tennis season from the official site.
Six straight B1G conference regular season and tournament titles!
Undefeated in Columbus for 128 straight matches,
Six single's players ranked in the top 125 in the nation.
OSU author refers to this team, coach, and program as a dynasty in the B1G!
Buckeye fan here but seems hard for anyone to challenge that dynasty comment as overboard, extreme, homer journalism.:)
Lots of momentum entering the season,
Would love to see this year's squad take the next step from B1G dynasty to NCAA dynasty.

The six-time defending tournament and regular-season Big Ten champions, the Ohio State men?s tennis team is eager to commence its 2012 spring schedule. The Buckeyes will return six letterwinners from last year, which culminated with a semifinal appearance in the NCAA tournament and a 34 win season, including an undefeated mark in the conference. Head coach Ty Tucker will have a tough task replacing three letterwinners lost to graduation, . . .

Since becoming head coach of the Ohio State men?s tennis team in 1999, Ty Tucker has quietly turned the Buckeye program into a Big Ten Conference dynasty by consistently leading his squads against some of the best teams in the nation . . .

The Scarlet and Gray have eight players ranked in the 2011 Campbell's/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division I Preseason poll released Sept. 9. Sophomore Blaz Rola leads the Buckeyes with the distinction of being ranked as the second-best singles player in the nation. Senior Chase Buchanan is not too far behind, coming in at No. 5. The six ranked singles players are the most of any team in the country. . .

Preseason Points
  • The Buckeyes enter the 2012 spring season with 128 consecutive wins at home.
  • Ohio State has won 17 of its previous 18 matches, with the only loss coming in the NCAA semifinals to No. 1 Virginia.
  • Additionally, the Buckeyes enter the spring winners of 56 of their last 57 road matches (non-tournament). . . .
