When do the first set of polls/rankings come out for D1 tennis teams?

http://espn.go.com/college-sports/rankings/_/key/GENITAMENSRANKINGS

And please tell me that none of the tennis players have tattoos.

Good question, because that Espin link is fairly dated.
The team polls come out in January.
The ITA is the body that ranks single's, double's, and teams.
The link for rankings can be found here.
http://www.itatennis.com/AwardsAndR...-12-NCAA-Division-I-Men_s-Tennis-Rankings.htm
The ITA releases a preseason poll of teams and individuals, but after matches are played rankings change from a human poll to a computer formula.
Re. tattoos :wink2:, not that I have observed, however most tennis players come from backgrounds that can support private lessons, tennis camps, and expensive individual trainers, and their team equipment does not have much street value.
The men's tennis program generally has 10-12 players on the team, but is permitted only 4.5 full scholarships per year.
Many of the player families are paying the bulk of their own school expenses.

Recapping today's action at the All American qualifier at Tulsa. . .
Three Buckeyes, one single's player and one double's team advanced through the All American qualifier to be included in the main draw,
Nelson Vick dominated his opponent in the first round to advance.
The double's team of Ilie VanEngelen and Devin McCarthy also closed out their opponents to qualify for the main draw.

Tomorrow begins the major event.
In the ITA All American singles draw the 64 man field will include 5 Buckeyes!
Headlining the ITA draw is the #1 seed OSU Sophomore Blaz Rola.
Rola drew the #1 seed because the top ranked ITA single's player Domijan of UVa did not enter the field.
Also seeded for the Bucks at #4 is Chase Buchanan!
Peter Kobelt, Devin McCarthy and Qualifier Nelson Vick are the final 3 Buckeyes included in the draw.

On the double's side of the All American Tournament, 3 Buckeye teams have earned selections into the draw of 32.
The team of Rola and Buchanan were selected as the #3 seed.
New Buckeye Conner Smith will pair with Peter Kobelt.
Qualifiers Devin McCarthy and Ilie VanEngelen are the third Buckeye team in the main draw. They will have a major challenge in the first round against the #1 seed.

Starting now on court 1 is the 2nd round match for the #1 seed of the ITA tournament-- tOSU's Blaz Rola.

Fans can watch online with live video at the Tulsa U link.
http://www.tulsahurricane.com/livestats/m-tennis/TulsaTennis.html

Earlier today Chase Buchanan advanced to the 3rd round with 2 victories.

McCarthy and Kobelt are in the consolation round.
Vick won his first consolation match.

Tough news for #1 seed at the ITA All American, tOSU's Blaz Rola dropped his 2nd round match to Jenkins of UVa. From the glimpses on the live feed, Rola's strokes were not sharp, especially looked loose on his forehand side. Not like Blaz to miss so many/generate so little pace off his usually very powerful and reliable forehand.
Yesterday was a long day of tennis in Tulsa, marked by many upsets including the top three in the men's singles side of the tourney.
Chase Buchanan the #4 seed was the highest seed to advance to the round of 16. He will play this morning against Freshman Mitchell Frank of UVa at 9 am.

ITa ALL AMERICAN Singles Draw

Also advancing in the double's draw to the round of 16 were OSU's Buchanan and Rola the #3 seed. They will play this afternoon vs. Nebraska. Should be interesting to see what Nebraska tennis will be bringing to the B1G. So far at the ITA AA, they look as if they could be a strong challenger for tOSU in the 2012 title chase!

ITA ALL AMERICAN Double's Draw

For the players, yesterday was a tough endurance test, maybe the most extreme for the year. Not a Darwinian theorist, but it represented as close to a survival of the fittest or extinction model we might witness.

Players who lost their first round matches are playing in the consolation draw. It is amazing to see the talent that is in the consolation backdraw.
Vick and McCarthy are still alive in the backdraw and will both play 3rd round matches today at 9 am. Vick especially has been impressive in both the qualifiers and now the backdraw. His efforts will surely not go unnoticed when Tucker is considering his lineup next Spring. The consolation round is also a good chance for Buckeyes to earn some big points in the individual computer rankings.

In action from the ITA All American tournament today from Tulsa, two Buckeye double's teams advanced to tomorrow's semifinals.
In today's main draw, #3 seeds Blaz Rola and Chase Buchanan were victors in both their round of 16 and quarterfinal matches to earn a place in the semifinals of the main draw. Tomorrow at 1 pm est. they will face a team from Georgia.

Also advancing in the consolation draw were Buckeye's Ilie VanEngelen and Devin McCarthy. They will face a pair from Miss. State in the consolation semis tomorrow.

In a somewhat surprising showing from the B1G conference -- two Illini advanced to the main draw singles quarterfinals -- Nevola the #6 seed and qualifier Roy Kalmanovich

The ITA All American single's quarterfinals and semis will be played Saturday and the finals of both singles and doubles will be decided on Sunday.

Let's go Bucks!

Recap of the ITA All American championship from the OSU official tennis site.

LINK

Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola, members of the Ohio State men's tennis team, were crowned the 2011 D'Novo/ITA All-American doubles champions Sunday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. The Buckeye duo concluded the prestigious event with a 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-4 win over Georgia Tech's Kevin King and Juan Spir in the final. It is the first All-American doubles title for the Buckeyes since Scott Green and Ross Wilson captured the title in 2004.
Buchanan and Rola were ranked the third-best team in the draw, while Spir and King were the top-seed in the tournament.
Ohio State becomes the first Big Ten school in history to have had multiple teams win the doubles crown. Illinois is the only other conference school to have won an ITA doubles championship (2002). Rola and Buchanan also advanced to the doubles final last season but fell to Virginia's Drew Courtney and Michael Shabaz. It's the third time in ITA Championship history that a team has participated in back-to-back doubles finals.
With the victory, Buchanan and Rola finish their unblemished run in the tournament 5-0. The tandem also improves to 12-3 in tournament play and 21-7 overall in their career.
Buchanan and Rola advanced to the tournament final after defeating Georgia's Sadio Doumbia and Ignacio Taboada 6-2, 6-4 Saturday.
Buckeyes Devin McCarthy and Ille Van Engelen fell to California's Nick Andrews and Chris Konigsfeldt 8-5 in the doubles consolation final. They finish the tournament 3-2, including a loss to Spir and King during the first round of the main draw. . . .

Noticed that we did not fare so well in the singles. I guess Ty must be bringing them along slowly.

Hey Litl, Sure hope you don't get banned for bashing the coach!

I had expressed alot of "concern" (probably would have gotten a ban in the football forum) with the Buckeye double's strategies last winter. Much of my criticism was directed at the coaches who were having players in a double deep formation on returns and even on serve!
Sentiment among the fans and families was that this strategy placed the teams at a severe disadvantage, it surrendered the net and put OSU in defensive posture in a game where aggressive/offensive play is prized.
Watching some of the Rola/Buchanan live video and especially the double's finals, it appeared that OSU's strategy has changed!
In the finals, Buchanan was strong, consistent, and relentless, but Rola was an animal! The net dominance displayed in 5 straight victories against elite NCAA competition and then against the top seed in the finals was impressive.
Re. the single's play, Rola is clearly not as sharp from the baseline as he could be--cannot say if it is timing issues or effects from the illness this summer, but his ground strokes and especially his forhand was erratic, I am confident that unforced errors are fixed with time, coaching and endurance training.
Buchanan, Kobelt, Vick and McCarthy just ran into better competition.
The All American included the 64 best players in the NCAA!
The Buckeye team was represented by 5 players. The other 128 universities sent their #1 and some #2's. It was a good experience for the crew. You improve with better competition but sometimes you just have to tip your hat and say their #1 is better than OSU #3-6.
Buchanan was eliminated in the third round by the best American junior since McEnroe. Freshman Mitchell Frank from UVa dominated the entire tournament competition, don't think he dropped a set. It may be that the only NCAA players that could potentially challenge him this year are last year's #1 Steve Johnson and UVa teammate Domijan.
The ITA regionals this weekend will be important tests for the Bucks.
Have not heard what the competition in Columbus will look like but when it is announced will try to link it.
Go Bucks!

It was actually the second year in a row that a UVa freshman won the ITA All American tournament. Last year -- Domijan.
They are displacing Stanford and USC as the premiere recruiting destination.

Congratulations to the Gator girls on some impressive showings at the ITA Rivearra.

Preview of the ITA Midwest regional tournament hosted by tOSU Oct. 13-17.

http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/ot/tennis-2011-ita-midwest.html

Looks to be another endurance test as the tournament progresses.
For players not selected for the main draw=tough challenge to go deep and make noise in the tournament.
With 21 schools participating, it projects for a lot of tennis, but for players in qualifying draw, means a brutal schedule. A 64 draw in qualifying singles requires a player to win 3 matches Thursday and Friday morning to enter the main draw first round played Friday afternoon. With two more rounds both Saturday and Sunday, any remaining qualifiers are likely fatigued.
So it will be interesting to see how many Buckeyes will get selected (48 auto q) for the main draw and where they might be seeded.
Would anticipate that 5-7 might be considered for the auto qualification based on the ITA rankings and All American tournament--Rola, Buchanan, McCarthy, Kobelt, Vick and possibly Smith and VanEngelen.
The field of 21 teams includes B1G elites like Illinois,TSUN, Sparty, and Wisky. Also independents ND and Marquette.
The winners in doubles and singles get invitations to the prestigious ITA indoor tournament at the US Open site.
Sunday and Monday look to be some exciting tennis at the OSU Varsity Indoor Tennis Center.
