Ohio State Men's Tennis (2014/2019/2024 ITA Indoor National Champs, 17 Straight B1G Titles)

Strange that the article below states that Hunter will be a redshirt freshman and according to everything I have heard he was not enrolled at The Ohio State University last spring. That is probably an error on the reporter's part but it is nice to see that Hunter is playing some good tennis even though it is on clay.
? Hunter Callahan , who will be a redshirt freshman for the OSU men's tennis team, went 5-1 in advancing to the semifinals at the USTA National Clay Court Championships, which ended on Sunday in Delray Beach, Fla.

Yeah Litl, thanks for catching that!
You are the man in tennis recruiting!
Callahan has the kind of upside that makes me think that he could be contending for that #5 or #6 spot in the lineup next year.
Lots of experience coming back, i.e. Buchanan, Van Engelen, Rola (holding deep breath), McCarthy, Kobelt, and Vick, but this 18 year old has some talent.

Maybe its too early to discuss recruiting for 2012 but this class of 2012 recruit hails originally from near Pittsburg, Pennsylvania and is the #2 ranked Junior in the World!
Sounds like the kind of challenge Coach Tucker might embrace.

PARIS ? Move over John McEnroe, the United States has won the Junior Boys singles title at the French Open for the first time in 34 years since the left-hander did it.
Bjorn Fratangelo, a 17-year-old, right-hander from Plum, Pa., who now calls Naples home, put his name in the record book, defeating Dominic Thiem of Austria to capture the elusive title, 3-6, 6-3, 8-6, on Sunday.

The OSU official tennis site released a new article about Hunter Callahan today. Mystery solved, his status is a redshirt Freshman,:wink2:
Even though he was not listed on last year's roster, he did indeed enroll in the spring quarter. The official site even has a picture of him cheering with the team at a match.
Mr. Callahan had an impressive run to the semis at the National clay court junior USTA tournament, the semifinal loss was vs. the #1 seed.

Blaz Rola has been traveling the European futures tournaments this summer.
In 5 tournaments played he carries a 9-4 record with 3 quarterfinal finishes. Rola's pro ranking has dropped significantly this past year, from @ 380 last summer to @ 680 now.
The lack of ATP tournament victories while at tOSU factors heavily in the ranking decline.
This week Rola is in his home country Croatia and has advanced to the semis of the F6 Futures tournament. Tomorrow's semifinal opponent is none other than fellow Croat, and former OSU student athlete, Dino Marcan.

Maybe Blaz can convince Dino to come back to school :wink2:
(and not the other way around.)

The Buckeye Athletic office released the 2011-12 tennis schedule and it appears to be a Ty Tucker inspired special challenge!
Buckeyes will be appearing in seven highly competitive tournaments this fall, hosting the ITA Midwest regionals in October, and will be certain to have the opportunity to earn critical ITA points with a loaded spring scedule.

OSU Official site

The Ohio State men's tennis team and head coach Ty Tucker have officially released their fall and spring schedule for the 2011-12 campaign. The fall slate begins Oct. 1-9 in Tulsa, Okla., for the D'Novo/ITA All-American Championships. The spring season kicks off Jan. 18 with a challenging mix of non-conference matches starting with the annual doubleheader against Butler and Xavier.
The fall calendar consists of seven tournaments. Following the All-American tournament, the Buckeyes will host the ITA Midwest Regionals Oct. 13-17, before competing at the Big Ten Singles Indoor Championships Oct. 28-31. The team will travel to Flushing Meadows, N.Y., Nov. 3-6, for the ITA Singles and Doubles National Indoors Championships. The squad will also participate in two USTA Challenger events - Charlottesville (Oct. 28-31) and Knoxville (Nov. 5).
Ohio State will endure a demanding schedule in the spring, both in non-conference and conference play. Following the home doubleheader Jan. 18, the Scarlet and Gray will have eight consecutive matches against teams ranked in final 2011 ITA Top 75 poll. They will welcome Mississippi State (No. 20) Jan. 22 and Pepperdine (15) Feb. 3. The team will travel to Louisville (24) Feb. 9 and Michigan State (53) Feb. 12, before returning to Columbus to meet Kentucky (8) Feb. 25 and North Carolina (18) Feb. 26. The Buckeyes will go to Notre Dame (31) March 3 and face Texas A&M (10) at home March 9.
In total, 19 of Ohio State's 24 spring opponents finished ranked in the ITA Top 75 last season, including 13 in the Top 35. Georgia, Kentucky and Texas A&M all finished in the Top 10. All nine road opponents concluded the 2010-11 campaign with a spot in the ITA standings . . .

After losing 3 strong seniors last spring to graduation, and with the possiblity that Dino Marcan might convince Blaz Rola that the European futures circuit is fertile soil to cultivate a budding pro career, there was much suspense about how Ty Tucker might design the Buckeye roster for '11-12.
Alas, the 2011-2012 Buckeye men's tennis roster is out and it includes one major surprise and another big smile!
Roster
The smile, last year's OSU First team all-American Blaz Rola is included on the Buckeye team roster as an entering Soph.
Rola last year led the Buckeyes going 10-3 at number one singles, and 15-1 at #2 singles in dual matches and finished 41-7 overall.
He also earned First Team All-Big Ten honors, became only the second Buckeye to ever earn ITA All-American honors as a freshman, and also received the very prestigious 2011 ITA National Player to Watch.

If that is not enough good news for the day, one big surprise!

New Buckeye roster players include not only incoming Freshmen Chris Diaz and Hunter Callahan, but a transfer from the Florida State Seminoles.

Connor Smith was the #2 rated blue chip recruit in the class of 2009, he has two years of eligibility left. Smith anchored the #3 singles position last year for the Seminoles.
Perhaps most impressive in Smith's bio for FSU was his play at the #1 doubles position! He teamed with senior Mirzadeh and reached an ITA doubles ranking of #12 in the nation.
Welcome back Blaz and big Buckeye Planet shout out to new Buckeye Connor Smith. We will enjoy your years of success in the family!

Is Smith eligible to play this year?

Good question BB, Hadn't considered that the transfer rule may DQ Smith for a year. Any idea about the rules for transfers in men's tennis?

Smith was the #2 rated blue chip recruit in the class of '09 (same year as Buchanan, who was #1, though CB enrolled early).

Maybe premature in my projection that Smith-Buchanan, Kobelt-Rola would make some dominant double's tandems for 2011-12.

I might be wrong but I do not think that the same transfer rules apply in tennis that they do in football. I say that Smith will be eligible this year and, as an aside, I haven't talked to anyone:wink:

I am a little confused with regard to the roster on the official website. It lists Smith as a freshman and Buchanan as a senior. Thought Smith would be a junior as would Buchanan.

Several members of the OSU Tennis team have been playing in Canda on the pro futures tour. Because of their amateur status, they may not claim any of the prize money, but are posting some impressive results.

At the F5 tournament held Sept 5-11, Hunter Callahan, Peter Kobelt, and Nelson Vick advanced out of the qualifier and competed in the main draw.
Each represented well with Vick advancing to the round of 16.

In the F6 Futures tournament, Sept. 12-18, Kobelt and Callahan advanced out of the qualifying tournament into the main draw. In the qualifiers, Callahan stunned the #3 seed and Kobelt upset the #7 seed. In the Main draw of the pro futures tournament, both Hunter Callahan and Chase Buchanan (AQ) earned first round wins.

Freshman Hunter Callahan is featured in this USTA article.
LINK

Even when he was the No. 14 recruit in the nation this past year, Hunter Callahan never got a big head. Instead, the Ohio State freshman and native of Ambler, Pa. talks little about himself and mostly speaks about those who helped him get to the position he?s in.

"My parents were the ones who got me into tennis," he said. "If it wasn?t for them, I wouldn?t be where I am now."

Now in the ever-competitive world of Division I tennis, Callahan is making the adjustment to big-time college athletics. . .

"The thing that was most important to me was the coaching style and the players," he said. "We have the best players in the country (at Ohio State) and it is great playing with them every day. And (coach) Ty Tucker very intense, so he pushes us very hard."

The Buckeyes begin their season Oct. 1. To keep track of Callahan and his team?s success this year, click here.
