Ohio State Men's Soccer (2024 B1G Champions)

Emperor Brutus;1778639; said:
As expected Ohio State dropped all the way to 23, you don't lose two straight games and not have it cost you.

Wednesday night Ohio State took on number 8 Louisville, Louisville has been playing well this year they came in undefeated going 4-0-1 on the season. Ohio State leads the series all time going 7-4-2 against the Cardinals.

Sadly the game was like most Ohio State games during the reign of John Bluem an unattractive defensive struggle. This one ended in a 0-0 tie. In a game that had three fewer shots than fouls Ohio State lead in fouls while Louisville lead in shots, that should tell you all you need to know about Bluem's coaching style. That was one of the few statistics that showed the difference in the two teams, most of the game was played as even as the score line.

The Louisville keeper ended the game matching Ohio State's Matt Lampson with with three saves. Both teams ended the first half with three shots, Ohio State had another that went in the net but was waved off when Joshua Breto was called offside. Both teams accumulated two yellow cards had four corner kicks and got off two shots in extra time.

Three of the four shots came in the first overtime including both of Ohio State's. The extra time was lackluster as both teams were worn-down from the run of play during regulation, with only four shots total their wasn't a lot of action on the Ohio State end until the final minute. Louisville hit a shot from ten yards out that Lampson had to dive to save, eventually the ball went out for a corner kick. The match ended on Louisville's corner which was swung into the box and then secured by Lampson as time expired.

Ohio State's next match is the last of their six game road trip, tomorrow they go up to Ann Arbor to play a Michigan team that will be looking for revenge. Michigan was not happy last year being the team that the Buckeye's captured their Big Ten championship against. Ohio State will not get a very pleasant welcome home either as they will face top ranked in state rival Akron the following Wednesday. This is not your Akron football team, they are undefeated (6-0-0) and made their latest statement tonight by beating second ranked Tulsa 4-0. Their fans also travel well. Last years game was the first sporting event I have ever been to where a team from Ohio had more fans in the stadium than the Buckeye's during a game played on Ohio State ground.
I thought the men's soccer program was improving but it sounds like we are starting to regress again and I was wondering about your thoughts regarding that. It certainly sounds from this post that you don't like Blumen's coaching style and I wonder if the players like playing that way or is that the type of kid he recruits.

I'm not going to say Bluem has done nothing for the program, because that would be an out and out lie. The program was nothing before he got here he's made it something but it will stagnate if Ohio State doesn't move on. He's an average soccer coach at best, he just doesn't have the tactical acumen to get it done. That's not where his biggest problem comes in however, the truth is that he's turned off the Ohio soccer community big time. He had a team where he cut many scholarship players which is a little shady at best, many of these kids were his own recruits. As you can imagine this turned off a lot of Ohio coaches, most of which still try to sway their kids away from Ohio State.

Xavier Balc was a gift for Bluem, he got Casey Latchem, Ohio State's keeper the year they got to the national championship, to come to Ohio State. Meanwhile current Crew center back Eric Brunner went off to soccer power Maryland, when he decided he wanted to come home Balc was a big reason he came to Ohio State. Without Balc, Bluem doesn't stand a chance at getting those other Ohio kids and doesn't get close to the final four let alone the national championship.

Even worse for Ohio State Akron has made the right moves more through luck than anything. Ken Lolla started a very nice thing in Akron but he was much more of the initial spark like Bluem than your long term plan. Lolla went off to Louisville where he thought he was going to further develop a better program; Louisville was deemed more attractive to him due to better facilities and commitment. Just for comparison sure Louisville has better facilities than Akron but Ohio State has better facilities than Louisville. Most people seemed to think well Lolla is gone the Akron program will settle back into obscurity, but then Akron gets themselves Caleb Porter an assistant at Indiana. He didn't just keep the ball rolling but took it to another level. In case you are wondering Porter is a Michigan native that played his soccer at Indiana and likes nothing more than to take Ohio State down with a program deemed inferior within its own state. He was reportedly offered jobs last year after Akron's great run but turned them down. Likely the only way he leaves Akron is if he is offered the Indiana job.

Bottom line Ohio is one of the big states in soccer talent, MLS has changed everything in that regard. The Buckeyes are not only losing that talent to Akron but other powers throughout the country. Bluem helped himself a little with the run to the NC but he needed a good soccer player that just wanted to be a Buckeye in Balc to get that done.

Bottom line Ohio is one of the big states in soccer talent,
I knew that because one of my nephew's sons place for a high school traveling team out of Cincinnati and my nephew who helps coach the team played soccer at a college in Ohio and had always talked about the good young soccer talent in the Ohio high schools. It's a shame that we can't get that talent.

How did this go unnoticed... shame on that paid staff:) and  to the men's soccer team.
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Senior Sam Scales scored the game-winner, while sophomore Matt Lampson tallied 11 saves to lead the No. 23-ranked Ohio State men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Michigan Saturday night at the U-M Soccer Complex in Ann Arbor, Mich., in front of 3,207 fans. The Buckeyes improve to 5-2-1 overall and 1-0-0 in the Big Ten with the win as the Wolverines drop to 4-2-3 on the season and 0-1-0 in the conference.

Lampson's 11 saves are not only a career high, but the most tallied by a Buckeye goalkeeper in a single match in at least the last decade. The Hilliard, Ohio, native has five shutouts to his credit this season and 14 over the last two seasons, holding onto sole possession of fifth-place in the OSU career record book.

"It was a heck of a win tonight," head coach John Bluem said. "Sam Scales' goal was an unbelievable volley and was just spectacular, coming at a time that we were under a lot of pressure.

"And I can't say enough about Matt Lampson's performance. It was by far his most complete game and his best in a Buckeye uniform. He was truly fantastic and clearly showed that he is the best goalkeeper in the league."

The teams swapped shots during the opening minutes of the first half before Michigan exploded for a five-shot onslaught over the second 10 minutes, all of which were stopped by the Buckeye defense. Ohio State capitalized on its first counter, however, and Scales put the Buckeyes on the board early in the 20th minute.

Where is Mr. Akron (NJ-Buckeye) soccer:huh:

Dispatch
David Tiemstra scored a goal with two seconds remaining in regulation, and No.19 Ohio State tied top-ranked Akron 2-2 in a men's soccer game last night before a Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium record crowd of 7,255.

The Zips (6-0-2) had not allowed a goal since Nov. 15, 2009 - a streak of 11 games, tying the NCAA record set by Furman (2002) and matched by Virginia (2009). The Buckeyes (5-2-2) are the first team to score two goals against Akron since the two teams met last Nov.7.

Tiemstra's goal came off a pass from Matt Gold a few yards out from the goal.
"There is no other feeling like it I could describe, or like anything I have ever felt in my life," Tiemstra said.

Neither team scored in the two extra periods.

Ohio State went up to Michigan to open Big Ten play; the tie against Louisville didn't do much for the team's ranking, they faced Michigan as the number 23 in the latest poll.

Michigan outplayed Ohio State offensively, they had six corners while Ohio State only had two, both coming in the second half. Michigan had twice as many shots and led the Buckeyes eleven to four in shots on goal. So it was good for Ohio State that their second shot on goal hit the back of the net.

Austin McAnena sent a pass through the Michigan midfield to Senior Sam Scales, Scales then settled the ball and hit a rocket from 25 yards out. The Michigan keeper had no chance as Scales gave Ohio State the lead in the 20th minute. It was a great play and as the only goal of the game Scales would normally garner player of the game honers but in this game he had no chance. Matt Lampson earned his man of the match honers throughout the game but the biggest reason came just a minute after Scales goal.

Right after Ohio State's goal Michigan pushed down the field moving the ball into the box where an Ohio State defender committed a foul setting up a penalty kick opportunity for Michigan Senior Justin Meram. Meram has talent, he is only the sixth player in Michigan history to score a hat trick but he was going up against a future MLSer in Lampson. Meram tried to pick out the lower right corner but Lampson read him all the was blocking the shot and holding it up not giving up a rebound.

With the lead in hand Ohio State continued to concede possession to the Wolverines, they would end the game with 24 shots including 11 on goal. Lampson would save all 11 preserving the win. Lampson has 14 total shutouts putting him fifth all time for Ohio State keepers and the 11 saves sets a new single game record.

The game against Michigan would mark the last of six road games, they finally got to play at Jesse Owens Wednesday against in state rival Akron.

Ohio State set a new record for soccer at Jesse Owens Wednesday night, unfortunately a majority of the 7,255 in the attendance were pulling for the opponent.

Akron was trying to claim an NCAA record for shutouts in this game, they came in with 11 dating back to last year. While the Zips did not win the national championship the game ended in a scoreless draw resulting in a shootout so Akron still recorded a shutout for that game. The streak would not come to an end quickly as it took 30 minutes for either team to get on the board, it was a shocker that Ohio State scored first.

Mighty Akron was humbled by a player that wasn't even recruited by the Buckeye's., Austin McAnena a former walk on scored the first goal of the game in the 29th minute on a scramble in the box that Akron couldn't clear. McAnena joined the team as a walk-on last year lead the team in goals and made the Big Ten All Freshmen team. McAnena is from California but has Ohio roots, his grandfather played baseball for the Cincinnati Reds.

Sadly McAnena's goal wouldn't stand up for long, six minutes later Ohio State tripped a Zip in the box setting up a penalty kick. Ohio State's Matt Lampson guessed diving to his right while Akron's Michael Nanchoff calmly placed the ball in the left side scoring the PK. Halftime would end with the teams tied 1-1

Ohio State would go down a man in the 52nd when Konrad Warzycha quite frankly lost his mind, he kicked a ball at the head of an Akron player that was on the ground, no hesitation the ref showed him straight red. Once Warzycha was sent off it only took 16 minutes for Akron to get on the board again. True Freshman Darren Mattocks put Akron ahead 2-1 in the 68th, then ran to the Akron rowdies to pump up the crowd.

Ohio State would not go down easily as they kept sending balls forward. With time winding down it looked like Ohio State would add another loss to their record when a hero came from maybe the most unlikely of places. Defender David Tiemstra scored off a ball from fellow defender Matt Gold during a frantic scrum in front of the net in which the Akron keeper went down trying to get to the ball when it was out of reach.

While each team had chances neither scored in over time and the game ended 2-2, a good result for an Ohio Team playing down a man.

I'll put this here for fun. This is a video taken by Akron fans, just to make sure you know what is going on the Akron fans are counting down because college soccer doesn't end like profesional soccer, there is a clock that ends the game at a set time it is not up to the ref. The Akron fans start to count down and then stop when the play starts to look bad for them, I'll let you listen to their reaction.

Win over Michigan State, lost to Northwestern

Release: 10/03/2010
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Just four days after breaking Akron's shutout streak, Austin McAnena scored the game-winner in the No. 19 Ohio State men's soccer team's 2-1 victory over No. 11 Michigan State Sunday afternoon at a rain-soaked and wind-blown Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Buckeyes, unbeaten through their last four games, including three against ranked opponents, are now 6-2-2 overall and 2-0-0 in the Big Ten, while the Spartans had their six-game winning streak snapped and fall to 7-2-0 on the season and 1-1-0 in the conference.

McAnena found the back of the net in the 65th minute off an assist from Buckeye goalkeeper Matt Lampson to break the 1-1 tie that had stood for the previous 46 minutes of play. Sam Scales also scored for the Buckeyes, equalizing the game at one in the first half after the Spartans took an early lead. This is the first 2-0 start to the conference schedule for Ohio State since the 2004 season.

"The [2-0 start in the Big Ten] is critical," head coach John Bluem said. "Michigan State is a good team. They had some problems today, but I think they are going to figure into the conference race. For us, you have to get your points at home - you have to win your home games. When you only have three games on the road and three at home, you don't want to give away your points."

EVANSTON, Ill. - Joshua Breto erased the shutout and two-goal deficit, but the No. 15-ranked Ohio State men's soccer team fell to Northwestern, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at a hot and sun-soaked Lakeside Field. The loss snaps a four-game unbeaten streak for the Buckeyes, dropping their record to 6-3-2 overall and 2-1-0 in the conference, while the Wildcats are now 6-4-1 on the season and 1-1-0 in the Big Ten.

The match will be aired on the Big Ten Network beginning at 5 p.m. (ET) with Dan Kelly and Daryl Shore calling the action.

"You have to give credit to Northwestern and the way they played today," John Bluem, Ohio State head coach said. "They came onto the field ready to play and were able to take advantages of our weaknesses to put two goals on the board. As a team, we did not do what we needed to do or play the way we are capable of playing and that will hurt you at this point in the Big Ten schedule."

The Wildcats struck first, scoring in the 38th minute. Reed Losee collected a pass from Matt Eliason 20 yards out

Columbus Ohio - Konrad Warzycha scored the game-winner in the 97th minute as the No. 16-ranked Ohio State men's soccer team outlasted Valparaiso, 1-0, in overtime Sunday afternoon at a beautifully sun-soaked Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Buckeyes improve to 7-4-2 on the season with their sixth shutout of the year, while the Crusaders drop to 6-6-2 overall.

"We needed a good result today to stop the bleeding from the two losses last week," John Bluem, Ohio State head coach said after the match. "The guys are happy now, and we're relieved. This is good for us, going into an important conference match at Penn State."

The Buckeyes dominated time of possession from the get-go, but had trouble converting on their opportunities until late in the first overtime period. From near the top center of the goal box, Parnell Hegngi played Warzycha the ball out along the left side and the senior captain stuffed inside the near post from about six yards out for his team-leading fifth goal of the year.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - With goals from Konrad Warzycha and Chris Hegngi, the Ohio State men's soccer team returned to its winning ways with a 2-0 victory over Oakland Wednesday night at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Buckeyes improve to 8-5-2 on the season, 5-0-1 on their home field, while the Grizzlies drop to 4-9-2 overall.

"I hope that we can build from this game," head coach JohnBluem said. "It wasn't our best performance of the year, but the second half early goal took a lot of the pressure off and made it easier for us."

Warzycha's tally in the first half was his team-leading sixth of the season and fourth game-winner. He converted on the opportunity with the help of fellow senior captain Sam Scales, who earned his 14th career assist to move into a tie for eighth place in the all-time record books.
