I apologize for not keeping up on this thread. Number 18 Ohio State took on College of Charleston tonight in the Bert and Iris Wolstein Classic, Chris Hegngi scored the game winning and only goal in the 24th minute.

I will do a more comprehensive write-up later I just wanted to get this out there for those interested.

Football central? Ohio State has the No. 2-ranked college football team in the land and the university's 4-0 men's soccer start has those Buckeyes knocking on the door of a soccer top-10 ranking as well. Ohio State and Penn State are the only universities that have teams in the Top 25 for football and "futbol." In case you are wondering, no school has ever swept the football and soccer national titles in the same school year.

Not good news but at least it bumped the Akron thread down:)

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 9-ranked Ohio State men's soccer team absorbed its first loss of the season Thursday, falling to USF, 2-1, in the Embassy Suites Kick-off Classic hosted by Florida Golf Coast in Fort Myers, Fla. The Buckeyes are now 4-1-0 on the season, while the Bulls win their third in the row for a 3-1-1 record.

Chris Hegngi scored the lone Buckeye goal midway through the first half, equalizing the game at one-all. Bernardo Anor tallied what would stand as the game-winner for the Bulls, however, late in the 83rd minute of action.

USF came out strong in the opening minutes of action and scored on its second shot in just the eighth minute for the early 1-0 lead. Shawn Chin, the leading scorer for the Bulls with three on the season, hit the upper left 90 of the goal from the opposite side of the penalty area off an assist from Hasani Sinclair at the 7:14 mark.

Ohio State opened the season ranked 18th, they started the season with the Bert & Iris Wolstein Classic played at home in Jesse Owens.

Their first game was against the College of Charleston, Sophomore Chris Hegngi scored the first goal of the season for the buckeyes off a deflection. Assists were given to captain Sam Scales and freshman forward Omar Vallejo. Scales was a part of the buildup that got the ball into the box on the right side along with freshman Vallejo. A shot was taken inside the box the rebound went to the feet of Hegngi who finished his chance after having shot wide in the 16th minute. Sophomore Matt Lampson was credited with five saves and recorded his first clean sheet of the season. Ohio State received no card in their first game.

The second game was against Buffalo. While Ohio State created chances they were unable to find the back of the net through the run of play. This game was more physical than Ohio States opening game, the two teams accumulated six yellow cards. Two going to Ohio State and Four going to Buffalo. Eventually the nature of the game caught up with Buffalo and Ohio State was spotted two penalty kicks which senior captain Konrad Warzycha converted. Keeper Matt Lampson was able to keep Buffalo off the board throughout the game giving him his second clean sheet. Ohio State won the game two to nothing.

Ohio State took their 2-0 record on the road to the Penn State classic.

The Buckeye's first game at University Park was another physical game against Binghamton. The two teams would accumulate seven yellow cards and only produce eleven shots on goal, few were truly quality chances. After a first half in which Ohio State controlled the run of play, the Bearcat defense was finally broken by a foul in the box and another Warzycha PK. The opening half ended with only two shots and one yellow card for Binghamton, Ohio State also picked up a yellow card but got the goal. Through the 69th minute Binghamton would receive three more yellow cards and only get two more shots. From the 70th minute forward the Bearcats were forced to push forward testing Ohio State's defense. Binghamton produced five more shots more than they had the entire rest of the game fortunately Matt Lampson and the defense were able to repel all five preserving the victory for the buckeyes.

Ohio State went into their second game against Bucknell ranked eleventh in the nation and looking to move up. The game started slow with the first shot coming off a spot kick in the 17th minute, it would also be the first goal of the game. The Buckeye's Warzycha would take the spot kick which deflected off a defender and into the Bison goal. In an uneventful half there would only be seven more shots, neither team would be carded and there would only be fifteen fouls between the two teams. The second half would open quickly but would settle down again. After an initial shot by Ohio State's Omar Vallejo to open the half Bucknell would begin to control the game. From minute 53 to minute 76 the Bison would control the game but it would be Ohio State that would get on the board again. Matt Gold would find Austin McAnena for a break away goal in the 77th minute to put Ohio State up by two. Bucknell would finally have their work pay off in the 77th when they cut the lead in half. The Bison pushed to try to tie the game up but Ohio State's defense held after giving up the first goal of the season and made it out with a win.

Ohio State improved to 4-0 but they had only scored two goals from the run of play.

With a 4-0 start Ohio State moved up to number 9 in the country and traveled to Fort Myers, Florida for the Embassy Suites Kick-off Classic.

The Buckeye's first opponent was the South Florida Bulls. Unfortunately for Ohio State their usually stingy defense had a let down early. South Florida scored on their second shot leaving Ohio State chasing the game. When the Bulls scored the Buckeyes hadn't even gotten a shot off, after the first goal Ohio State pushed up and worked at breaking down the South Florida defense. In the 19th minute Ohio State would tie the game with just their third goal from the run of play this season. Omar Vallejo found Chris Hegngi for Vallejo's second goal and Hegngi's second goal respectively. The Buckeye's kept the pressure up for the rest of the half ending with nine shots to the Bulls three. While Ohio State would finish the game with fourteen shots to South Florida's nine; the Bull's got more of their shots on frame which was the ultimate story of the game. The second half was more even than the first and looked as if the game was heading to overtime when they Bulls broke through in the 84th minute, the winning goal the game ended 2-1. Ohio State has relied heavily on sophomore keeper Matt Lampson this season and in this game he gave up two goals, twice the amount he had in the previous four games.

Ohio State next took on Florida Gulf Coast The Buckeyes should have scored first but freshman Omar Vallejo showed his inexperience after he broke through the Eagles defense got inside the box but placed his shot right at the Gulf Coast keeper. Had he picked his shot better the Buckeye's could have controlled the game and left the Eagles chasing. Much of the game came down to a goal keeper battle, sadly for Ohio State Lampson had the first error and Gulf Coast capitalized in the 64th minute with a cross from right side that resulted in a header into lower right corner. The Buckeyes had chances to tie the game but just couldn't capitalize, in the second half Sam Scales beat the Gulf Coast keeper only to see his shot hit the crossbar.

Ohio State will drop in the rankings but they will not have to wait long to prove their worth again. They stay on the road next Saturday when they go up against undefeated Louisville, a win there would do a lot to get the team back on track.

As expected Ohio State dropped all the way to 23, you don't lose two straight games and not have it cost you.

Wednesday night Ohio State took on number 8 Louisville, Louisville has been playing well this year they came in undefeated going 4-0-1 on the season. Ohio State leads the series all time going 7-4-2 against the Cardinals.

Sadly the game was like most Ohio State games during the reign of John Bluem an unattractive defensive struggle. This one ended in a 0-0 tie. In a game that had three fewer shots than fouls Ohio State lead in fouls while Louisville lead in shots, that should tell you all you need to know about Bluem's coaching style. That was one of the few statistics that showed the difference in the two teams, most of the game was played as even as the score line.

The Louisville keeper ended the game matching Ohio State's Matt Lampson with with three saves. Both teams ended the first half with three shots, Ohio State had another that went in the net but was waved off when Joshua Breto was called offside. Both teams accumulated two yellow cards had four corner kicks and got off two shots in extra time.

Three of the four shots came in the first overtime including both of Ohio State's. The extra time was lackluster as both teams were worn-down from the run of play during regulation, with only four shots total their wasn't a lot of action on the Ohio State end until the final minute. Louisville hit a shot from ten yards out that Lampson had to dive to save, eventually the ball went out for a corner kick. The match ended on Louisville's corner which was swung into the box and then secured by Lampson as time expired.

Ohio State's next match is the last of their six game road trip, tomorrow they go up to Ann Arbor to play a Michigan team that will be looking for revenge. Michigan was not happy last year being the team that the Buckeye's captured their Big Ten championship against. Ohio State will not get a very pleasant welcome home either as they will face top ranked in state rival Akron the following Wednesday. This is not your Akron football team, they are undefeated (6-0-0) and made their latest statement tonight by beating second ranked Tulsa 4-0. Their fans also travel well. Last years game was the first sporting event I have ever been to where a team from Ohio had more fans in the stadium than the Buckeye's during a game played on Ohio State ground.
