Buckeyes fall to Wake Forest in NCAA men's soccer championship
Monday, December 17, 2007
By The Associated Press

CARY, N.C. Zack Schilawski always dreamed of scoring big goals in his hometown.

He delivered the biggest one of his career there Sunday, scoring the eventual game-winner to lift Wake Forest to a 2-1 victory over Ohio State in the NCAA College Cup championship.

?It?s unbelievable,? said Schilawski, who graduated from Cary High School. ?Growing up here, I?ve seen a lot of great games on that field. It?s a thrill just to be a part of a game like that, much less to win it. It was perfect.?

Schilawski snapped a 1-1 tie with a goal in the 77th minute to help his team win the first NCAA men?s soccer title in school history. The second-seeded Demon Deacons (22-2-2), who had been 0-2-1 when trailing at halftime this season, rallied from a 1-0 deficit.

No. 5 seed Ohio State (17-4-5), which was playing in the College Cup for the first time in school history, entered the contest undefeated when scoring first and unbeaten when leading at halftime. But the Buckeyes couldn?t hold on after Roger Espinoza gave them a lead with a goal in the 13th minute, and their school-record 15-game unbeaten streak came to an end.

CARY, N.C. -- A hometown hero got between Ohio State and its first men's soccer national championship. Sophomore Zach Schilawski, who grew up five minutes from SAS Soccer Park, scored in the 78th minute, completing Wake Forest's comeback from a 1-0 deficit and sending the Demon Deacons to a 2-1 victory over the Buckeyes in the final of the NCAA College Cup.
Both teams were making their first appearance in the national title game.
"As you can imagine, the guys right now are crushed," Ohio State coach John Bluem said.

I went down to watch the college cup, the atmosphere was great, but Wake fans are awful. During the UMass game Wake fans were talking smack the whole time instead of enjoying our game and talking soccer with our fans. The first game was pretty good, but to be honest we should have put an insurance goal or two on the board, it could have come back to bite us and almost did. As far as Wake goes we went up against a team that had one of, if not the best striker in college soccer, many of us weren’t feeling great about the game.

Their first goal was clearly out of bounds and we let the ref know it, but Wake dominated the crowd and I think it was actually starting to get to that crew a bit. The second I didn’t see the handball and I’m not rewatching the game to see if it happened. Either way sometimes you get calls and sometimes you don’t, Wake should have gotten a free kick from inside the box in the first half anyway. We needed to press and possess more to take pressure off our defense, we didn’t do it and we paid the price. We very nearly screwed up the first game against Louisville with the same tactics before we switched out of it.

Here’s hoping this gets some Ohio boys to take notice and stay home instead of going to Indiana, if that happens this is a win for this program.

Appearance in College Cup raises bar for Buckeyes

Sophomore Konrad Warzycha of Dublin Jerome is expected to be a key playmaker at forward as the Buckeyes aim for another College Cup appearance.

As Ohio State waited for its flight home from the College Cup final last December, coach John Bluem did a quick check on the psyche of his team.
The pain from a 2-1 loss to Wake Forest still numbed, but Bluem saw little wallowing. Instead, there were a few smiles mixed with some tears. Even a joke or two was told.
"Everybody had realized at that moment already what a great season we had," Bluem said. "Yeah, we fell short, but it was an incredible experience for everybody."
Losses in national title games don't fade quickly, but the Buckeyes knew they couldn't dwell on the defeat for long. The team had reached the summit in men's soccer and expectations had changed. Goals had to be rethought.
"(Going to the College Cup) raised the bar even higher, which I think is a good thing, and means this program is going in the right direction," said senior Patrick Roan, a Westerville North graduate. "We're accepting the challenge."
