Wiscy fired their coach, and Rohlik is a Badger alum. He may not be at the top of their list, but I'm certain he'll be on it. I have zero confidence that Gene is going to step up and build the men an proper arena which would certainly keep Rohlik here. So, I guess we just have to play the waiting game now. One thing we have going for us is that Wiscy hockey has been doing the whole "michigan man" thing, and having it blow up in their face for a decade. They may finally be at a point where they decide it's time to look outside the family.

I thought the hockey arena was in the works to be finished in 2024-2026?

Won't know for sure until the design study is done, but it's most likely going to be for the women and double as a practice rink and training facility for the men. There is no right size arena that both teams could use. Women need one of 2000-2500, and the men need one about 6500-7500.

Given Gene's record of finding no fucks to give for hockey, I doubt he'll push for two arenas.

Are you talking about seating or rink size? Serious question. Hell I don't know it could be different

Seating. Men have been averaging over 7000 a game. Even when we sucked pre-Rohlik, we averaged 4500 (twice what baseball does). Minnesota's women's rink is 4K, and even there, it's half full a lot. 2500 is about the max for a women's arena, and 5K is the bare minimum for a men's.

Unless they come up with some pretty innovative (and expensive) design and engineering, there's really no common ground for a joint use arena.

Gotcha. But, couldn't we say that about the Schott? Schott is cavernous and never at capacity for a game.

I had an idea about the Schott where we only opened the upper ring for concerts and major events and when it was closed down with some sort of temporary wall, it would also be conducive to a louder more active game environment. Possibly they could do something similar for an ice rink while they're actually building it?
