Has anyone been to a game yet?

I'll be checking the team out in their "new" (to me) digs tonight against Northern Michigan. I believe that N. Mich. is ranked 19th and tOSU is just outside the top 20 (27th in votes).

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Nicholas Schilkey, Zach Stepan and Matt Tomkins have all signed NCAA National Letters of Intent to enroll at Ohio State and skate for the Buckeye men's hockey team, Mark Osiecki, Ohio State head coach, announced. The trio, including two forwards and a goalie, will join the Buckeye program in Fall 2013.

Schilkey (5-10, 175), a forward and native of Smiths Creek, Mich., is in his second season with the Green Bay Gamblers in the United States Hockey League (USHL). He has played in 13 games this year and has three goals and three assists for six points. He skated in 59 regular-season games for the Gamblers a season ago, posting 16 goals, 20 assists, 36 points and a +23 mark and was part of the squad that won the 2012 Anderson Cup as the USHL regular-season champion and the Clark Cup as the USHL playoff champions. Schilkey was part of the U.S. Junior Select squad that won the gold medal at the 2012 World Junior A Challenge in New Brunswick earlier this month, scoring two goals in the semifinal game vs. Switzerland. He has also competed for Team USA in the 2010 Five Nations Tournament and at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament last year. Schilkey helped lead his Honeybaked midget major team to the 2011 Michigan Amateur Hockey Association State title.

Stepan (5-11, 166), a forward from Faribault, Minn., skates for the Waterloo Black Hawks in the USHL, where he has 18 points, with eight goals (four gamewinners) and 10 assists, and a +7 mark in his first 12 games. Stepan was on the gold-medal winning U.S. Junior Select squad at the World Junior A Challenge in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, earlier this month and he skated for Team USA in the 2010 Five Nations Cup.. He played at Shattuck-St. Mary's prior to joining the Black Hawks and had 65 points, with 22 goals and 43 assists, in 50 games in 2011-12 as the team captured the U18 Tier 1 National Championship for the second-consecutive year. COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Points from 10 Buckeyes, along with 31 saves from senior goalie Brady Hjelle, led the Ohio State men?s hockey team to a 4-1 victory at Lake Superior State Friday night in Taffy Abel Arena. The Buckeyes, now 5-3-3 overall and 4-1-2-1 in the CCHA, and Lakers (6-7-0, 3-4-0-0 CCHA) will meet at 7:05 p.m. Saturday to close out the weekend series in Sault Ste. Marie.

In the series opener, Ohio State led 1-0 after the first on a Matt Johnson goal and sophomore classmate Ryan Dzingel scored in the second for a 2-0 Buckeye advantage after 40 minutes. Sophomore Max McCormick extended the lead to 3-0 in the third before the Lakers broke up the shutout with a power play goal at 16:22. Junior Chris Crane sealed the win for the Buckeyes with an empty-net goal. Sophomore Tanner Fritz was the lone Buckeye with multiple points, posting two assists for the second-consecutive game. Ohio State was outshot, 32-28, in the contest.

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? The Ohio State men?s hockey team lost the series finale at Lake Superior State, 3-2, Saturday night at Taffy Abel Arena in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. The Buckeyes (5-4-3, 4-2-2-1 CCHA) and Lakers (7-7-0, 4-4-0-0 CCHA) split the series after a 4-1 Buckeye victory Friday.

Excellent article on the Ohio State hockey program
It?s the end of November, and Mark Osiecki sounds relaxed. Maybe that?s because the Ohio State coach better understands the task at hand in Columbus, now that he has two seasons with the Buckeyes behind him.

Or maybe it?s because OSU has won three of its last four CCHA games and has climbed into a three-way tie for second place with Notre Dame and Ferris State.

?I get reminded every day that it?s a marathon,? Osiecki said, ?not a sprint.?
Ah. The former.

What Osiecki and assistant coaches Steve Rohlik and Joe Exter are attempting to do in Columbus is change not just the culture of hockey at OSU but contribute to changing the culture of hockey throughout central Ohio. It?s not a new concept; John Markell, the coach whom Osiecki replaced, was firmly on board with that as well.

?Let?s grow hockey,? Osiecki said, ?not so much growing Buckeye hockey alone. Let?s grow the whole pie rather than a piece of it. Let?s help hockey grow.?

That pie became exponentially larger when the NHL expanded to include the Columbus Blue Jackets, whose first season was 2000-01, but Osiecki was familiar with the culture of hockey in Ohio before the addition of an NHL team and long before he took the job at OSU. Osiecki roomed for a year at Wisconsin with Don Granato, who coached the now-defunct Columbus Chill of the ECHL from 1997 to 1999.
?Donny used to talk about how great the city was and about how much hockey there was in Columbus back then,? Osiecki said.

More than a decade after the departure of the Chill and arrival of the Blue Jackets, Columbus has one of the most active adult recreational hockey leagues in the nation and its youth hockey programs are blossoming. Many OSU hockey alumni are involved in recreational and youth hockey, Osiecki said, as well as with the Buckeyes hockey program.

Strengthening the link between OSU hockey and the community and between OSU hockey and its alumni is a primary goal of the current coaching staff.

?I spent one year in North Dakota my first year of coaching and that?s what I felt there,? Osiecki said. ?It didn?t matter who was coaching, who the administration was, how the team was doing ? it was all about the former players? commitment to the program.?

Brady Hjelle, statistically speaking, is one of the best goaltenders in college hockey.

The Ohio State senior ranks third nationally in goals-against average (1.45) and save percentage (.950). In his past six games, he has allowed four goals and has two shutouts. He is video-game good.

?Only in Xbox,? Ohio State coach Mark Osiecki said when asked if he had experience coaching a goalie as hot as Hjelle, before comparing his current form with former Wisconsin standout Brian Elliott, who led the NHL in goals-against average last season.

?Brian was a brick wall back there and you could ride him,? said Osiecki, a former Wisconsin assistant who won a national championship with Elliott in 2006.

Hjelle (3-2-2) has split starting duties with freshman Collin Olson, but that could change during an early but important two-game Central Collegiate Hockey Association series at Michigan State (4-6-2, 3-4-1-0) beginning tonight that could push Ohio State (5-4-3, 4-2-2-1) into the conference lead.

?I think Brady has certainly earned that right,? Olson said of giving Hjelle back-to-back starts. ?If he plays well (today), I think there is a pretty good chance he plays Saturday.?

Olson has been solid. He is 2-2-1 with a 2.68 goals-against average and .914 save percentage. Osiecki and his staff have not deviated from their plan of playing both goalies to develop Olson and foster internal competition that has kept Hjelle on his toes. Osiecki said he does not doubt the rotation ? Hjelle on Friday nights, Olson on Saturdays ? has contributed to Hjelle?s success.

?It?s not all falling on his shoulders,? Osiecki said.

Ryan Dzingel’s goal at 17:47 of the third period lifted Ohio State to a 1-0 road victory against Michigan State last night.

Alex Szczechura’s shot was stopped by Jake Hildebrand, but the rebound found its way to Dzingel, who converted it for his team-leading sixth goal of the season.

The Buckeyes (6-4-3, 5-2-2-1 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) had gone 0 of 2 on the power play until that point.

Goals by both teams were disallowed in the second period. Ohio State appeared to have taken the lead with 8:27 remaining thanks to sophomore Tanner Fritz, but video replay said it was not a goal. About five minutes later, he Spartans (4-7-2, 3-5-1-0) appeared to have taken the lead, but the goal was overturned because of goalie interference.

Ohio State hockey team with a nice sweep of sparty over the weekend.
Tanner Fritz had a goal and an assist, and Tyler Lundey scored twice for Ohio State in a 3-1 victory at Michigan State.
Brady Hjelle made 22 saves for the Buckeyes (7-4-3, 6-2-2-1 Central Collegiate Hockey Association). Michigan State is 4-8-2, 3-6-1-0.

Save for red-hot goalie Brady Hjelle, Ohio State is a team devoid of stars.

The top scorers, Ryan Dzingel and Tanner Fritz, have combined for 26 points in 14 games. They are tied for 66th nationally in points per game. But the Buckeyes aren?t built for flash. They are a back-checking, rush-breaking crew that has grinded its way to five victories in the past six games.

Ohio State (7-4-3) is ?doing all the little things,? coach Mark Osiecki said, and it has propelled them into a tie for second place in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.

?We don?t have to talk much about defensive hockey because our guys take care of all the little details and have done a great job,? Osiecki said. ?We have real good speed, very high end speed, and the transition game going back to defense and the back pressure is tremendous.?

The Buckeyes rank 50th nationally in offense (2.07 goals per game) but sixth in defense (1.86 goals per game) heading into a nonconference series opener against Robert Morris (5-4-1) tonight at Value City Arena.

That?s ?Buckeye hockey,? said freshman forward Tyler Lundey, who scored twice in a 3-1 victory at Michigan State on Saturday. And it is those little things that jump off the screen during video sessions, Osiecki said, and drew the attention of former NHL great Chris Chelios, whose son, Jake, is a Michigan State defenseman, and made it a point to tell Osiecki he noticed.

On any other night, a quick first-period goal would have been welcomed by Ohio State.

But not last night. Coach Mark Osiecki said a goal by right winger Matt Johnson 1:51 after the first puck dropped was a ?kiss of death? in a penalty-filled, 3-2 nonconference loss to Robert Morris in Value City Arena.

?Right there, I thought our guys let off the gas a bit and they thought it was going to be easy,? Osiecki said.

It was anything but. Three players were issued five-minute major penalties and ejected. The Buckeyes, winners of five of their previous six games, committed 10 penalties and racked up a season-high 31 penalty minutes. Robert Morris had seven penalties for 36 minutes.

?There was zero flow in that game,? Osiecki said. ?That?s frustrating. It?s tough to play the game that way.?

Robert Morris forward Andrew Blazek tied the score at 1 with the only goal of the game scored during 5-on-5 play. Ohio State sophomore Max McCormick scored a power-play goal at 1:10 of the second, but Adam Brace tied the score at 2 with a short-handed goal late in the period. Scott Jacklin scored the winner on a power play with 12 minutes remaining in the third.

Ohio State took a season-high 45 shots but couldn?t beat Robert Morris goalie Eric Levine during a frantic third period in which Levine saved all 20 shots he faced.

Bad weekend for the pucksters with a loss and a tie:(
Craig Dalrymple scored with less than four minutes remaining in the third period to tie the game at 2 and the Buckeyes men?s hockey team salvaged a tie in the concluding game of a two-game series against Robert Morris last night in Pittsburgh.

After dropping the opening game of the series Friday night in Columbus, Ohio State (7-5-4) fell behind early last night when Robert Morris? Adam Brace scored early in the first period.

Devon Krogh brought the Buckeyes even with his first goal of the season, but the Colonels (6-4-2) retook the lead less than two minutes into the third period on David Friedmann?s fourth goal of the season.

Brady Hjelle made 37 saves for Ohio State in his fourth consecutive start.
