Thanks for the information very helpful! Here you go...
Offense:
Stanley has looked good, not great, but young with great potential. Has a great arm, decent mobility (not a runner), and will be much more than a game manager by the time he's done at Iowa. Could eventually be the best QB Ferentz has had. Will hold the ball too long at times and then try to force the ball. Was overthrowing open deep receivers right and left early, but has found more touch recently. Really like this kid and if we want to have any chance at all of winning will need to have a big game on Saturday, because...
The OL hasn't been great at run blocking. Two new OTs after the starters went down with season ending injuries. They are very talented freshmen with upperclassman bodies, but still freshman. Wadley has not had much room to operate. Butler was a nice addition until he dislocated his elbow. Was back last week and looked competent, so could bolster the run game a bit, but gotta get better blocking up front.
TEs are a strength with soph #87 Fant ending up as one of the best ever at Iowa (which is saying something). Gone is the Greg Davis horizontal offense and younger Ferentz has been more adventurous downfield as well as over the middle.
This was a microcosm of last year (ugh)...
WRs are serviceable with some young talent showing more athleticism than in the past. Still much work to do here, but Vandeberg, Easley and Smith-Marsette have shown flashes. Need to get Wadley more involved with the ball in space as there aren't many more elusive RBs in the nation.
Defense:
DL has been solid for the most part. Not a ton of playmakers, although #98 Nelson and #94 Epenesa have the most potential for TOL/sacks. Josey Jewell is one of the best in the nation, but as with most Iowa LBs, lacks top end speed. Ability to read plays usually makes up for that. Neimann is also a very competent LB. #15 Josh Jackson at CB may be Iowa's next Thorpe Award winner as he has been nails all year long. The other corner can be picked on a bit. Safeties have been a mixed bag and starting FS Snyder who was the QB of the D will likely not play after reinjuring his knee (tore ACL in the spring and then came back with a pick six vs Illinois. Not related to the ACL).
As mentioned above, your typical bend/don't break D from Iowa. More concerned about the run D this year more than most, which is what I think dooms them vs. OSU. We are rotating DL now rather than trying to get through the game with just four. Tall guys (can all be over 6'5" depending on the rotation) who can bat passes down and obscure throwing windows. Also agree with poster above who mentioned getting to the edge. The sideline to sideline speed just isn't there. Barrett will need to be patient. If he gets over-confident I could see us picking a couple off. If OSU sticks with the run game it will be there in bigger chunks in the fourth quarter (and then play action).
Special Teams:
Kicker is good. Strong leg. Punter is inconsistent (have used two of them). Kick returns have our next good RB #21 frosh Kelly-Martin who might be able to exploit poor OSU kick coverage (hot button). Punt return game has been quiet, but Vandeberg has ability.
Well if you guys have a good returner, don't commit penalties, and don't turn the ball over that's sort of our kryptonite so to speak.
That's about the last time we played, right?
Seriously, guy says, I'll go backwards 5 yards so you can try to tackle me again. Just for funsies. Nope.
I remember 3 yrs. ago.....we were #16. Not a matter of concern. If we run the table and win the B1G CG, no way we get left out. Everybody root for TCU in the Big 12 CG!So I think getting snubbed today is going to piss our team off. Looks like we have to continue embarrassing teams when we get the opportunity
