Game Thread Ohio State @ Iowa, 11/04/17 @ 3:30 (ESPN)

Tressel took over a total [Mark May]show in '01. In '04 he had just lost 14 guys to the NFL draft.
Meyer took over an even worse shit show in '12 (6-7 the previous year, the year caused by Tressel himself). Meyer lost 12 guys to the 2016 draft (two less, but better average selection position, with five in the first around alone and the top seven selected are all currently starting) and we still went 11-2 with a playoff appearance. Here's a comparison of the first five full years for each:

214-012-2
311-214-1
48-411-1

The more I think about this season, the less confident I get moving forward.

We've played 3 above average teams this year and we got blown out twice and took a miraculous comeback to win the other.

We have 2 (potentially 3 if we make it to CCG) more above average teams coming. scUM I feel confident on because, well, we always win. But MSU? A team with a very good defense, a smart QB who is playing with confidence right now and limits turnovers and an established ground game? Sounds a lot like Iowa.
I'm not confident at all against either team from up north. Both play better defense then us, both have better special teams and both have offenses that limit turnovers.

The wheels very well could come the fuck off no doubt. We very well could win out though... who knows.

Urban also got to take over with Braxton Miller and Tressel for Bellasari.

Urban got the program from a coach that went to three nattys and would still be coaching if not for the tattoo business. If none of that shit went down we may very well have had a chance to win it all in 2011.

And Tressel choose to stick with Bellisorry instead of giving some kid named Krenzel a shot, not to mention getting Harvey Weinsteined by Meyer himself in the 2006 BCSCG (and again Les fucking Miles by in the 2007 BCSCG). You've been here for a long time and as such you should know that few, if any, were bigger "Tressel apologists" than I. Tressel was great for the program and the university, and needs to have his name up in The Shoe next to Woody's some day. But he was not a better head coach than Meyer is.

The 1946 Michigan squad was ranked #8 by the AP, and the Wolverines were at the beginning of what would become a 25-game winning streak that would lead to back-to-back national championships in 1947 and 1948. A bad loss to a great team.

Michigan was the home of several training programs in WWII one of which, V - 12, took in men from schools across the country and allowed them to go to school while simultaneously training for the military - ROTC on steroids. These same men were allowed to participate in sports. At the end of the war, Michigan had a leg up on other Big 10 schools in terms of man power. It didn't hurt that Elroy Hirsch, an All American end at Wisconsin prior to the war, decided to finish his college days at Michigan, starring on the 43 and 44 Michigan teams.

Following the NC season of 42, the Buckeye roster was gutted when Paul Brown accepted a commission in the navy:
The 1943 season was a disaster for Brown and the Buckeyes. Depleted by the military draft and facing tough competition from teams on Army and Navy bases, Brown was forced to play 17-year-old recruits who had not yet enlisted.[46] Ohio State had affiliated itself with the Army Specialized Training Program, which did not allow its trainees to participate in varsity sports, while schools such as Michigan and Purdue became part of the Navy's V-12 training program, which did. The Buckeyes ended with a 3–6 record. In three seasons at Ohio State, Brown amassed an 18–8–1 record.[7]

Krenzel was not the answer in 2001 though and we all could see bellasari was more talented. Once Tressel got things rolling he never looked back.

2001 and 2004 were both within his first 3-4 seasons at OSU. Once Tressel had an opportunity to recruit a full team he dominated the big ten like bama is doing to the SEC.

Urban wins because his teams are disguisting when it comes to talent. Tressel won because he was a damned good football coach.

They're very different coaches and they're both amazing. However I fail to think Tressel doesn't school Dantonio in 2013 and 2015. Maybe he loses to ped last year but a punt and field goal block? That's not how Tressel would've lost.

Bottom line is UFM has had unprecedented success but Tressel had this freight train running down hill already

I feel like we could either show up and play lights out next week, or as bukIpower just stated, the wheels could come off the bus. Problem is, I don't think even they know which team is going to show up. So for me...I'm done guessing what's wrong and trying to figure out how to fix it. I plan to grab a box of popcorn and watch the show next Saturday because none of us have a freakin clue how it's gonna go.

Apples to oranges. To address lv's post properly, you should be looking at the 2017 NFL Draft, not the 2016 Draft.

Is it really? Both had years with unprecedented amounts of talent heading to the NFL. Urban has weathered the next season a little better than Tressel. A large part of that is because Urban recruits nationally and his strategy does revolve around dominating through talent. Whereas Tressel built a team that took some time for 3star kids to develop.
Both have their positives and negatives, but Tressel was going to have a hard time winning another NC imo. For the entirety of the Pryor era the offense was basically him just running around in circles. That wasn't going to get better with Brax. The program had plateaued in terms of NC relevance; even while he routinely throttled the Conference.
We also had fluke losses under Tressel... though, as documented earlier, none quite like yesterday's historical meltdown.
They've both been outstanding coaches for us. Whenever Urban does leave, the next guy may need to be a bit more of a fence builder... the Conference has become noticeably more competitive as Ohio's furtile grounds have opened back up. Though I think we've also seen the impact of planting the conference flag on the Jersey and Beltway recruiting grounds.
