Game Thread Ohio State @ Indiana - 09/14/19, 12:00PM (FOX)

Well that's to be seen. I said game planner which to me is key. So far it seems Day will alter his offense weekly to feature different aspects depending on the opponent. Urban was a lot more "this is what we do and we ain't changing".

I like Ryan's ability to utilize different players, sets, and formations to better attack teams.
that's a bold statement after just two games

You may feel they are playing better than both those teams right now (you are entitled to your opinion), but both have much superior talent compared to IU's roster. They may be from florida..... but there is a reason they are going to IU and not UF, FSU, Miami, even UCF and SF.
some of our florida players have turned down the schools you mentioned to come to iu. they have noticeably longer frames and are more athletic than indiana usually has. allen coached down there and has a bunch of connections and is developing a pipeline. part of his pitch is the opportunity to play against osu, michigan, penn st, and msu every year.

Also in 3 games last year...but so far his game plans have been outstanding.

As for chatting: players talking about they come to IU to beat OSU and your DC coach with some questionable wording too.
thursdays are media days where the team is required to make players available to reporters, as well as some coached. reporters ask questions, players have to answer. they are kids talking in the usual cliches saying what you would expect them to say. are they not supposed to express confidence in the face of overwhelming opposition? i haven't heard anything inflammatory at all

Your season preview says you all return 2 starters with your LT and the RG.

The reason you guys don't take a ton of sacks is you all throw the ball quick. Not because your OL is dominant.

Holding onto the ball is really asking for it though I think.
i would not call our o-line dominant. probably worse than the last few years. not running the ball well so far. on the other hand, we have yet to allow a sack

I mean sure but there's ways to do it... typically you guys say the other team is great and how it'll be a battle etc.

I'm not saying they shouldn't say those things but rather it just isn't smart.

As for no sacks that's because you played not great competition and have a quicker paced offense. I agree though that your OL isn't as good as the past few years which IMO is an issue for you guys.

Play for? Maybe. Start for? As I'll show below, probably not.

Maybe IU matches up better personnel wise than did UC... but, your claims, otherwise, do not hold much water...

Now, before I get to it here, I need to be clear - the rankings I'm posting do not, by any means, tell the whole story. They are simply a way to compare players using the same formula. Which is to say, the 247 rankings which I am using are internally consistent. Likewise, a high 247 rating does not assure any level, good or bad, of success in the college game. Which is to say, a player rated .8000 might well develop into an All American, while a guy rated 1.000 might be a relative bust owing to, say, shitty work ethic and an overbearing mother (See, for example, Rashaan Gary). But, with that said, I defy you to demonstrate precisely where "IU matches up everywhere else"

Indiana 247 player rankings for each starter:

WR .8228 Hale, Donavan RS SR
WR .8346 Nick Westbrook
SWR .8281 Philyor, Whop JR
LT .8811 Cronk, Coy SR 76
LG .8216 Crider, Harry JR
OC .8512 Littlejohn, Hunter RS SR
RG .8441 Stepaniak, Simon RS SR
RT .8457 Jones, Caleb RS SO
TE .8411 Hendershot, Peyton RS SO
QB .8449 Penix Jr., Michael RS FR
*** .8386 Ramsey, Peyton RS JR
RB .8402 Scott III, Stevie SO
DEFENSE
LDE .8405 Bryant, Alfred RS SO
DT .8339 Johnson, Jerome RS JR
DT .8403 Harris, Juan RSSO/TR
DE .8173 Stallings IV, Allen SR
LB .8114 McFadden, Micah SO
LB .8056 Jones, Reakwon RS SR
HUSKY .8213 Ball, Marcelino RS JR
LCB .8281 Brown Jr., Andre RS SR
SS .8620 Matthews, Devon SO
FS .8525 Fitzgerald, Bryant RS SO
RCB .8398 Layne, Raheem JR

Ohio State 247 player ranking for each starter:

WR-X .9546 Victor, Binjimen SR
WR-Z .9649 Mack, Austin SR 17
H-B .9330 Hill, K.J. RS SR
LT .8985 Munford, Thayer JR
LG .8135 Jackson, Jonah GR/TR
OC .9757 Myers, Josh RS SO
RG .9876 Davis, Wyatt RS SO
RT .8666 Bowen, Branden RS SR
TE .9233 Farrell, Luke RS JR
QB .9998 Fields, Justin SO/TR
RB .9791 Dobbins, J.K. JR
DEFENSE
DE .9957 Young, Chase JR
NT .8457 Hamilton, Davon RS SR
DT .9563 Cornell, Jashon RS SR
DE .9560 Friday, Tyler SO
OLB .8568 Harrison, Malik SR
MLB .8933 Borland, Tuf RS SR
OLB .8994 Werner, Pete JR 36
CB .9904 Wade, Shaun RS SO
FS .9403 Fuller, Jordan SR
SS .9421 White, Brendon JR
CB .9955 Okudah, Jeffrey JR
CB .8596 Arnette, Damon RS SR

Indiana has exactly 1 player rated ahead of his OSU counterpart - LG Harry Crider .8216 over Rutgers transfer Jonah Jackson .8135. In most cases, Ohio State's starter is vastly superior to his Indiana counterpart. Take for example, QB - whether it's Penix or Ramsey, neither is within a full point of Just Fields. That is hugely significant. I am not gonna go through this with a fine toothed comb, but I think you'll find that bears out across the board here.

I noticed that IU's top 4 roster players are:

Jack Tuttle QB .9321
Sampson James RB .9255
Beau Robbins DL .9070
Cameron Willimas LB .9005

Only Tuttle finds himself on the 3 deep. Sampson James was an Ohio State verbal, confirming the point that IU does have players who could play for Ohio State. My question is, and I realize these guys are all true Freshman, why aren't any of these guys in the three deep, at least?

Just a couple other quick notes to outline the talent disparity.

Indiana has 4 players who are 4 stars and rated .9005 or higher. By contrast, Ohio State has 60 4 stars or better, including 13 five stars (of which Indiana has zero). Ohio State has 40 guys rated better than Indiana's highest rated player, and 53 guys rated .9006 (.0001 above Cam Williams).

Indiana has 5 starters, at any position, who are rated as good or better than Ohio State's worst rated starter at any position (Devon Hamilton). Let that sink in. Ohio State's worst starter is better rated than every single player who starts for Indiana but for 5 of them. And you think Indiana matches up "almost everywhere." To the contrary, Indiana matches up literally nowhere. Not a single position. And certainly not a whole position group.

Now, to be absolutely clear, none of this means Ohio State can show up, throw it's hats on the field and walk out of there with a 50 point win. Indiana is well coached, plays to the whistle, and isn't going to shy away from the Buckeyes at all. I don't know that this Indiana squad is on par with the late 80s Indiana teams, and frankly, I can understand an IU fan's optimism in light of where the program under Tom Allen is now, vs. what IU has historically been... but... the idea that IU's talent and OSU's talent are essentially equal ("matches up almost everywhere) is patently untrue.
am i correct that these are recruiting rankings as opposed to how they would be rated as college players? i thrilled that our 4 four-star guys aren't playing because the older guys in front of them are better. in the past, they would all have been thrown in the fire.

quick paced, but not quick throw as you said before. new oc is trying to throw down field more, thus qb must wait longer for the play to develop. btw, our coaches and players have gone on and on about how great ohio st is to the point of nauseum. trust me. not a single player or coach has said anything like you are intimating. feel free to find a quote to prove otherwise

taking shots is not the same as putting some hits on a guy. all defensive coaches tell their players to hit opponents and let them know you came to play hard. i think you are trying to manufacture drama where there is none. i imagine your players aren't the least bit afraid to get hit by iu defenders. of course harbaugh last year complained indiana defenders were too rough after the game
A few things:
I don't care what you think.
The DC specifically called out and targeted (see what I did there?) our star QB. Playing word games with shots vs hits is diverting the message he was trying to send.
We will see tomorrow whether or not THE OHIO STATE BUCKEYES take it personally or not.
