Memorable Madness in Madison
Camp Randall Stadium has been the scene of some great football games between the Badgers and Buckeyes. It has also been the home of some wacky plays and circumstances around the game. In honor of OSU's impending return to Camp Randall on Saturday night, we decided to take a look at some of the memorable games there during the-Ozone era, which began in October of 1996.
Before we get into the games though, some general comments about the Camp Randall experience.
If you are a sports writer, you never forget your first "Jump Around," a Wisconsin tradition in between the third and fourth quarter. It's not so much for the actual jumping, but for the fact that the press box sways forward and backward a couple of inches when the fans start jumping. A couple of inches doesn't sound like much, but when you are sitting in the box and it starts moving, it's terrifying. Visiting writers all try to keep their cool, but when you look around at the faces near you while the box is swaying, they all have a "holy crap is this thing going to fall" look on them. Yeah, everybody smiles and laughs when the swaying stops, but during the actual swaying the look is more like "OMG, this isn't worth dying over."
And as long as we're talking media experience, the press box food needs mentioning. It's awesome and has a home-cooked appeal to it that is unusual in a press box setting. It is, however, very much a Wisconsin menu. On my first trip I remember looking for some salad and found none, so I asked a young lady behind the counter if I had missed it. She looked me dead in the eye and said quite calmly but firmly and with no sarcasm, "Sir, this is Wisconsin. We have cheese, and we have meat." I realized she was right. The entire bill of fare consisted of meats and cheeses. On Wisconsin, my kind of place. Dip that cheddar cube into the melted swiss and call it wonderful.
2000 - Ohio State 23, Wisconsin 7
The Buckeyes traveled to Madison to take on the No. 22-ranked Badgers and came away with a 23-7 win. OSU tailback Derek Combs scored on an 80-yard run just three minutes into the game, then scored again on a 21-yard run to put the Buckeyes up 13-0 when the extra point was missed. Tight end Darnell Sanders made it 20-0 with a touchdown reception on a pass from Steve Bellisari early in the second quarter. The Buckeyes then coasted home to the win.
The game itself held little drama, but the postgame made up for it.
Many Ohio State players, including captain Ken-Yon Rambo, celebrated the win by dancing on the Badger logo at midfield after the game. The usually raucous crowd in Madison was outraged and the Buckeyes had to be hurried off the field after the incident. In the postgame interviews, the players who participated in the antics claimed it was in retaliation for the Badgers dancing in Columbus on the Block-O at midfield following Wisconsin’s 42-17 win in Columbus the previous year.
Wisconsin quarterback Brooks Bollinger was 19 of 34 with one interception in the losing cause in Madison.
