Ohio State 69, Virginia Tech 56 (Final)

im really not surprised. i honestly cant see us blowing out a solid VT team even though we have the ability to. our team isnt the type of team for conservativeness. we would be better off just staying agressive and taking our chances.

The problem in the second half was that we were turning the ball over too much, and settling for perimeter shots. It was a very sloppy half, but we did play well in the first half and came away with the victory. VT is a pretty good team, and I think we showed that we can play with a lot of good teams. It looks like it should be a successful season for us.

What I liked:
- Perimeter defense in the 1st half...gave us great offensive opportunities
- Great job not turning the ball over in the 1st half
- Out rebounding our opponent
- Mayes, Lewis, and Foster from behind the arc

What I didn't like:
- Terrance's play roughly the whole game. Bad fouls, turnovers in the 2nd half, all causes little PT
- Turnovers in the 2nd half. We got sloppy and couldn't do anything right
- Free throw percentage...I am sick to death of this 5X% crap
- Sloppy defense in the 2nd half...we looked like another team.

Overall a quality win over a quality opponent. This kind of play will put us undefeated or one loss most likely into the Big Ten season. We need to play 40 minutes of basketball instead of 25 if we want to finish near the top of our conference. Matta should have some good video for the team to break down the 2nd half. Good job boys...Big Ten 1 ACC 0

That was the first Ohio State basketball game i've ever been to. I have lived in Dayton my whole life...and therefore have gone to a lot of Dayton basketball games. I wasn't impressed. The team is great. The game was great. The fans and the atmosphere flat out suck. Student section was pathetic. Dayton could be playing crap state and your ears would still be ringing after a game like that one. Va Tech is a pretty major opponent, coming in at 5-1...and it's like nobody cared. Ohio State needs to do something to try and get more fans to come to the game. I love Buckeyes basketball...have enjoyed watching them on TV. But...the game wasn't that fun at all.

Nice write up, Golfer. If I could add a few things:

What I liked:
- I really like Mayes. He's got the quickest hands I've seen in a Buckeye uniform in a long time! A clutch floater in the lane in the second half too.
- JJ Sullinger plays like he's 6'10"! I really think he's found his role with Matta. He seemed to struggle two years ago, and I think he really fits into the Jason Singleton role. He doesn't need to be the scorer, but he gets his points where he can, he just out-hustles, out-rebounds, and out-plays most guys on the court.
- Foster! I love that guy. Ever since last year's Texas Tech game, I've been a huge Je'kel Foster fan. Did Matta recruit him? If so, he really seems to know how to find JUCO talent.
- Terwilliger played solid. Great post move in the first half and a couple strong rebounds. Definitely showed some promise.

What I didn't like:
- Second half 3 point shot selection. Lewis and Sylvester took a couple poor 3-pointers. Mayes took a tough one too, but the shot clock was running out, so no biggie.
- Dials looses the ball on the dribble. He needs to learn to shoot or pass out of a double/triple team - NOT DRIBBLE! I 5'10" guard can steal the ball from a 7 footer if he's dribbling. You loose all height advantage.
- Ivan Harris seems to be falling through the cracks. I was pumped when the Bucks landed that guy, and last year he started to come on, but mainly as an outside threat. Now that we're loaded with 3-point talent, he is losing a spot.

Most of all, the Bucks are 3-0. At this point in the season, the wins really matter. Late in the year, you always look back and say, "if we could only have had fewer losses going into Big 10 play, we'd make the tournament...". Get the wins now, worry about peaking in a few months.

Negatives:
1) Sloppy play. Poor ballhandling from big men is one thing, but our guards were getting pickpocketed left and right, when they weren't losing control of it all by themselves.
2) One handed rebounds. I realize we don't have tons of size, but even when we have position we usually go up with one hand. After following izzo's squads recently, it is a glaring flaw of ours.
3) Dials. He needs to get the ball down low more often. He will not always struggle to make moves towards the basket, but with his size we need to get him closer to reduce the amount of dribbling he does in the paint.
4) Lewis. He thrives on drawing fouls, but when the refs are letting stuff go, he HAS to adjust his game.

Positives:
1) Clutch shooting. We stepped up and hit the big shots when we needed them.
2) Matt Sylvester hustle. He still takes too many wild shots for my tastes, but the guy made a number of great "hustle plays." Besides the offensive rebound and layup down the stretch, he also wrestled away an offensive rebound on a FT, and made a steal on an inbounds pass (IIRC).
3) Sullinger. An absolute beast. Ripping down tons of rebounds in traffic, creating second chances. He is really coming into his own.
4) Twiggs. Great minutes. I was worried about our depth at C, but he came in and not only filled in nicely, but made an impact on both ends of the court. He has really come along nicely.

Changes:
1) Offensive identity: what is it? Last year, it was the 3 ball. This year, I think part of it has to revolve around Terrance. Right now, we seem to dribble it around up top for 15 seconds and then see what happens. We have too much athleticism & talent to dwindle away possessions.
2) Foster/Mayes. Mayes quietly got 13 down the stretch, but he needs to be more involved early on. He is so quick, that he can create his own plays (and makes his shots much more often than the wild stuff Matt puts up). He and JeKel need to be a bigger part of the offense.

Overall:
1) A win is a win. It was nationally televised, and this was a tough test.
2) We should have put them away early, but it did not burn us this time. All of the mistakes in this game can be learned from without any consequences.
3) The ACC is 0-1. Take that Rafferty.
