Ohio State football: Penn State, friend of the Buckeyes

APFive wins down, three more to go for Penn State until the Nittany Lions march in to Columbus.
Joe Paterno is Jim Tressel's best friend right now. The more respect that the Nittany Lions gain in the college football landscape, the more Ohio State could gain from a victory over Penn State on Oct. 25.
Ohio State's national title hopes are slim (still no shot in my view), but if OSU can get past Wisconsin on Saturday, which should be difficult, Penn State might be the only other ranked team left on the Buckeyes' schedule. (Though Michigan State and Northwestern have a chance to sneak into the top 25 before Ohio State gets to them.)
Wisconsin didn't do the Buckeyes any favors by losing to Michigan last week, because if Ohio State wants to erase the USC loss, it needs to put together some impressive wins, and the Big Ten doesn't allow lots of moments for a team to be impressive.

Clark's arm is decent but not in the Troy Smith cannon category.

State Penn fans are starting to talk about blowing us out. Their memory is very short. We are not Michigan! They are not USC.
But, go ahead and make them #1 before they come to Columbus.

Clark reminds me of Troy Smith. A lot.

Agreed. And no, it's not because of their physical appearance. Against Wisconsin, the roll-outs, the cutbacks under pressure finding and throwing to WR's streaking down the sideline on a busted play - all vintage Troy. Jay Paterno didn't create a new offensive scheme, he just copied ours from 2006. And that one worked. Really, really well.

As I recall, the only way to beat that (our) offense was a speedy, disruptive D-line, safeties and linebackers that can shut down the short passing game, and praying Williams sprains his ankle while celebrating a return TD on the opening kick off.

Penn State has benefited more from an easy schedule than anyone else in the country.

I think Vegas makes us a 3-4 point favorite. Slides to 1 or 2 by kickoff.

Penn State hasn't had to face two playmakers the skill of Beanie and Terrelle yet. Should be interesting to see how they handle it.

One advantage each defense has, is that the practice against Terrelle and Clark will help prepare each defense for the game. PSU will be ready for the read-option. Hopefully we have some nice wrinkles....

If both lines continue to build on their improved play from today, we have a shot next Saturday. Additionally, PSU has done a good job of neutralizing our LB'ers the past few years, so the guys will have to step it up a notch.

I think this might be the first time we've played a Big 10 team ranked higher than us since 2004...

if by 'last few years' you mean some span not including last year, then perhaps.

What was psu in 05? They were the favorite and big ten leader, but I'm not sure where they were ranked pre-rail
