Game Thread Ohio State 6, Penn State 13 (Oct. 25)

Kind of did in an edit, but I'd rather you explain why he's a poor-man's Michael Robinson. Many of us on here have compared him to Troy Smith, so I know I'm not alone. I have yet to see him compared to a QB who is now a RB in the NFL.

I'm looking at his stats right now, and out of the eight games that they have played so far, Clark has only thrown for over 200 yards in 3 of those games, and he's only rushed for more than 50 yards in 2 of the games. His completion rate is high (63%), and that explains the relatively high yards-per-attempt, because he doesn't go downfield all that much. So basically, we have an efficient QB, who can't really hurt you too much running the ball, and really doesn't go downfield a whole lot. Plus, his WRs have all been there forever, and so far they haven't done anything against MJ and those guys.

So what I'm saying here is that PSU is primarily a power running team, like they've been under Morelli. The only difference is that Clark is more efficient. But he shouldn't be mistaken for Troy Smith in terms of production or Terrelle Pryor in terms of athletic abilities here.

Norwood and Williams have actually evolved into pretty solid receivers.

I've watched Norwood make some pretty nice catches.

IMO, the key is to have some seriously good coverage on their good stable of receivers. Then play contain to watch the scramble. I say make them run it on us, and let Dex, Rob, Thad, and Cam handle their business.

The comparisons to Troy Smith have been made because his decision making has been excellent. He looks like he has a pretty strong, accurate arm like Troy, as well. He moves runs when he needs to, throws it away when he needs to, etc. Just looks like a really smart QB who has similar physical tools/features as Troy.

But I see what you're saying.

I do think the key to all games is stopping one aspect of the opponent's offense, and in this situation I'd agree that we need to stop the run. But I think we need to force Clark (or Clarke? I don't know) to make some mistakes, because I think he has the ability to beat us if we're caught out of position.

After OSU kicked MSU back to LJ Smith era and PSU struggle in the first half vs Mich, I wonder what the spread will be for this game. I think OSU is favored by a point.

This site (LVSC Open) has Penn State favored by 1.

Butler is on pace to be somewhere around the 700 yd range, which is pretty much what he's done since his freshman campaign. Norwood is on pace to be have about 100 more yds than his usual pace. William's production at WR has actually dropped a bit, but he's picking it up big time in the sp returns department. They can have a really good game collectively but I'm not scared of those guys.

I think your description of sound decision making and relative accuracy on short and intermediate throws fit the Michael Robinson description pretty well, that's why I brought it up. Troy Smith is at another level as a passer, because he can always hurt you with the long ball and he has that sixth sense for where the WR is going to be.

But I agree that Clark is a threat and can beat us if he manages the game. Royster is a kid that we really gotta worry about because he is big, fast and loves to run inside the tackles. Big test for this DL.

Well their OOC schedule was absolutely horrid. Coastal Carolina, Temple, Syracuse, and Oregon State...GMAFB!!! They beat Illinois (4-3 and not as good as last year) by 14 at home... a team Minny beat in Champaign. IMO Illinois is the best team they have played.

PSU has a very good team but hasn't played anybody. Illinois and Oregon State have average at best defenses.

They will be playing a secondary 5 times better than any they have faced this year. D Clark has benefited from playing shitting defenses(especially secondaries) all year. Yeah I know we laid an egg at Wisky but we always do especially in Madison.

Stop the run!!! Clark will throw 2 picks in this game.

If we continue to play defense like we have been we are gonna beat the shit out of our remaining opponents. This defense is starting to play like the 2005 defense. If the D-line continues to improve we will be scary come bowl season. Has anyone noticed how much better our linebackers look...damn its amazing when the D-line starts taking on blockers how the linebackers can be free to make plays!!!!! The secondary has benefitted as well.

I'll tell you something Michigan did Saturday. They exposed the MLB and safeties of PSU. I'll tell you how you stop maybin(sp)...you run right at his 237 pound ass!!!! They overpersued Michigan and when they did Michigan kicked the DE out and ran inside.

What film does PSU have to watch? I can guarantee you we will run plays they have never seen. On the passes to the half back(Smith) the MSU defense looked confused. There will be wrinkles for PSU...thank you Michigan for exposing some weaknesses not previously shown.

If the offense and defense improve this week as much as they have in the previous two weeks we will beat PSU. They are good but not the juggernaut their fans believe they are.

I'm concerned by not scared!!

Of the QB's we've faced this year, Clark is more like Mark Sanchez than anyone else. Both are accurate passers and can move the pocket and make something out of nothing. Neither are looking to run first, but they can throw on the run. I think Clark brings more to the table than Robinson did. He's a solid QB and excels in his teams offense. Pryor and Clark cannot be compared as they are two completely different QB's.

What I want to know is have PSU's guys made some kind of transcendental elevation in their game this year? We've beaten all of these guys before. What will make 2008 different?

They might have, when you have a QB you can actually trust not to give games away you might elevate your game. :tongue2:

Agreed.

Where Clark can "hurt" you running is by moving the chains and at the goal line. Not going to gash you like V Young or T Pryor, but can kill you by "death from a thousand cuts".

Their O-line is the best part of that team. If you can slow down their running game and get them behind the chains a few times, then we'll see how good Clark is, or isn't.

They'll probably try to contain the pocket on TP and play alot of zone, try to make him beat them throwing.
I sure hope JT lets us throw some on first down.
