Game Thread Ohio State 43, Youngstown St. 0 (Aug. 30)

I was happy with the way Jt played a lot of people. the 2nd strings both got to play a lot of quality time. I also agree with what Brutusmaximus said about the pass blocking and Saine, who missed several holes.
Say what you will our tackles have been beaten by better pass rushes.

I am gonna get hammered for this......but oh well.

Thought everything looked good overall today, defense was ridiculous (of course it was against YSU), Pryor is amazing.

O-line looked good on the run, but bad against the pass rush. Now of course that could have something to do with all the switching in and out of linemen, but they were getting beat around the ends bad (and again, it was against YSU).

Running game looked good. Saine seems scared for some reason, and missed large gaps in the line on several occassions.

Now all this can be chalked up to alot of things, including it being the first game, but there is one thing that troubles me:

I dont have any faith in TB, whether it be beating USC, winning an NC game, etc. He is far too inconsistent, has no mobility, and throws far too many dangerous passes (and yet again, this is against YSU). I watched most of the SC game, and I saw a different caliber team. Now this could be my last post on BP because I am sure someone will wanna ban me for all this, but I am just callin it like I see it.

Early on when they were settling for field goals in the red zone I was begining to become concerned. Then I came to the realization that this was being treated like a glorified scrimmage by the Buckeye Coaches. Think about it, when was the last time you can remember JT sending in what amounts to the third team on the depth chart onto the field with 7:46 to go in the FIRST QUARTER?

I think we all knew not to expect a 72-0 blowout long before the ball was kicked off. After all this was YSU and that has a huge bearing on how JT treats this game. He would do everything in his power to be sure that the Penguins were not humiliated in this game.

Today certainly wasn't spectacular, but I didn't expect it to be. Every game you play gives you opportunities to improve and I'm sure we will see more of the first team next week and with that some of the higher caliber play we are expecting.

No doubt, watching the USC game had me worried. However, I'd like to think since we have two relatively easy games on our plate before we face the Trojans, we're taking a different approach for preparation. Against YSU, we can afford to break up the pace of the game with liberal substitutions. While this doesn't equate to an offense running at peak efficiency, it gets a lot of young guys on the field (and experienced guys with toe injuries :smash:). USC didn't have that luxury, so they practiced to make sure everything was ready day 1.

The optimist in me says Bockeman and the O-line are shaking off some rust. The pessimist in me says they have regressed from last year.

The same mistakes in pass protection are a big concern. No one is getting the man off the edge. Boone slides down with Rehering and the blitzer gets in untouched. Is it the protection? Is it the back? Who's calling the blitz protection b/c it isn't the center {step snap}. That can't be the QB's man all the time to his backside. Pryor outran one such occurance, but its YSU! Boeckman had happy feet b/c he was getting knocked around EARLY. I saw him grimmace after one hit. Any thoughts?

It may not have happened on that last play. It may have happened on the play before (his second longest run of the game iirc). Buckeyes Rock said something about Beanie not looking right after he got up. UTGrad (I think) said it was his Jim Brown impersonation.

In any case... I can understand people thinking the worst. It's happened before and we're understandably nervous, given the expectations for this season.

Point is that he slipped and went down without contact. Like I said, maybe he got dinged up on the previous play, tried to play through it, and as soon as he tried to put weight on his right foot, he went down.

nice call. he said in the presser that he thought he might have rolled it a play or two before, and that it kind of popped on that play. hopefully it's okay in a day or two...

GAME 1: (2) Ohio State 43 | Youngstown State 0
Starts and fits
Pryor appears, defense rules, but Wells' foot eclipses all

Freshman Terrelle Pryor was off and running in his debut for Ohio State, finishing with 52 yards rushing and an 18-yard touchdown jaunt.

The clang, clang, clang of the victory bell echoed through Ohio Stadium yesterday, but it was hard to tell for whom the bell tolled.
Was it for Youngstown State, victim of a thorough 43-0 thrashing at the hands of Ohio State?
Or was it sounding the death knell for OSU's hopes of a national title, which ride largely on the shoulders of running back Chris "Beanie" Wells?
Wells went down with a right foot injury in the third quarter. As he lay on the turf, 105,011 fans fell still, turning Ohio Stadium into a house of prayer.
"Absolutely, your heart jumps," coach Jim Tressel said.
Afterward, Wells was in a walking boot as he limped up the tunnel and back to the locker room. Tressel said X-rays were negative, and the possibilities range from a minor sprain to something like turf toe, which can linger for months.

The Bottom Line

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

X-rays are negative, they say, but it's hard to see the positives when the team's horse has to be helped off the field. If Beanie's wearing Das Boot for long, the Buckeyes' championship odds get longer. Leaves are awarded on a zero-to-five basis.
Offense (three leaves)
Those who seek balance in their lives had to be pleased, the Buckeyes' 251 rushing yards only slightly outpacing their 244 via the air. As stout as Beanie Wells looked while he was in there, newbie QB Terrelle Pryor was that smooth on his journeys. Velvet. Less buzz, maybe, but a good start for Boecks.
Defense (four leaves)
Game ball to Jermale Hines, thrust out of the shadows by injury and no doubt ready to answer the bell. Overall, the Buckeyes allowed five first downs and 74 total yards and got their first shutout since '06. Say what you will about recent BCS foibles, but these guys devour the small fries.

I definitely see what youre talking about, but I think what you saw today was a fairly simple game plan. TB thought he could make the throws, and for the most part he did.

Well I wasnt basing my opinion on TB off of this one game. I am speaking in general. I didnt have any faith in him last year, and still dont. He does fine against teams with basically no defense, but you put pressure on him and it's over. Here's hoping that I am wrong.

No one ever said Boecks was equal to Sanchez. But that being said this game was a scrimmage with 3 QBs used and many more players. We are not USC, we are who we are. This is a solid team all around that will get better week to week. Does anyone really want to compare us to USC?
Does anyone really want to compare Boecks to (USC)Sanchez and how they were used today? Sanchez played most of the Virginia game and had the stats to show it. How many series did Boecks get?
It's always tempting to compare us to teams across the country, but the only comparison will be on the field Sept 13. That's the only comparison that really counts. Trust Tressel. Trust the coaches. :oh:

I have 2 negative things to say about the game yesterday and it has nothing to do with the way the team played. First off the ticket office better get their sh$t together on their will-call ticket pick-up. Last year I casually walked over waited about 10 mins and walked back to my tailgate and then went to the game. This year the wait was 30-40 mins. When I walked up to the Schott the line looked like the one for people still trying to buy tickets. And they grouped student pick-ups with the will-call. My friends had pack up everything and I had to meet them at the stadium.

Secondly, what is up with the PA announcer and this, "That's another Buckeye........." and everyone yells "First Down?" That was so frigging annoying. I went to an OSU vs Purdue game back in 2004 and their band would play some queer tune and the fans would yell, "1,2,3,4, first down." The OSU fans were glad they could count to 4. They did this on EVERY first down not just the big ones. I sure hope this doesn't continue.

One positive note though. As I walked from my tailgate to the Schott carrying a plastic cup with beer in it a police officer asked me what I had in my cup as I was about to cross Woody Hayes Dr. and I honestly said, "Alcohol." He said, "Go make a worm happy and pour it out." I complied and went on my way. This would not have happened pre Gordon Gee.

I must say the thing that bothered me the most from this game was the Red Zone troubles.

Besides that it was good to see Boom, Zoom, and Mo Wells getting carries.

Pryor looked good, O-line solid but some blocking schemes need to improve.

Kicking game looks stellar, the 54 yarder might have just made it from almost 60.

We still need more TE play.
