The Buckeyes are 100%, no-turning-back, no-second-chances, no-[censored]ing-way-in-hell, take-it-to-the-bank OUT of the national championship picture.

I disagree here, but I admit it will require a lot from this team (and misfortune of other teams) for us to get there.

First, we'll need to look like a different team than the one we put on the field against USC. We're already starting that process by playing Pryor as our number 1 QB, and putting more new faces/names on the field. We'll also need to play well in our big conference games (Wisky, Penn, Ill, and even Mich). Big wins against Wisky and Penn, in particular, could help to change public opinion. We'll need to really beat up teams with our defense, and our offense will need to become more explosive.

Additionally we'll need for the SEC and Big 12 to cannabalize themselves (like they do most years). It's unlikely, IMO, that either conference will provide an undefeated champion, let alone both of them. And teams that lose later in the season are usually worse off than teams that lose early on, which means we could be at an advantage here (again though, we'll really need to change a lot of perceptions about our team).

I'm not saying this is likely to happen, but it's possible.

In addition to every major contender having Oregon State-esq losses, plus another loss in a conference championship game, we would have to convince the voters that we are a different team at the end of the regular season (assuming we go undefeated, which is NOT a fair assumption to make by any means).

Think back to last year, and all the crazy shit that had to happen for us to get into the NC game after we lost to Illinois. The probability of everything playing out the way it did was very slim. The probability of what I detailed above happening would be even slimmer.

I'm not saying this is likely to happen, but it's possible.

Before the season, several people who have votes in one poll or the other said that they would be inclined to put a 2-loss SEC team ahead of a 1-loss Ohio State. They also said there were many others voters who were so inclined. This was in the context of the need for Ohio State to go undefeated.

We had a big hole to climb out of BEFORE the USC game. That hole is now so deep that it will take more than 8 wins against Big Ten teams to rehabilitate our reputation.
