Let's not underestimate one of the teams that reloads just as much as we do..

I know you're not saying we're going to blow them out, but it definitely sounds like you think we're going to win for sure. The last two times we underestimated a team, we lost (Illinois, Florida).

Sorry if I'm just reading too much into that. I just don't like seeing stuff like that, especially with an opponent like USC.

I don't think I'm underestimating USC. I certainly don't think the game's a lock, although I am cautiously confident that our talent and experience will give us an edge, especially on D. We've got about 6 guys who could just as easily be on an NFL roster than going to LA. Beanie's another guy who is already primed for the NFL. I can certainly see us losing a close game. I can also see us winning a close game. If one team dominates the game, my gut tells me it would be OSU. Not counting my chickens, mind you, just analyzing the known factors. Rest assured that on 9/13, I will be heavily self-medicated just to deal with the anxiety.

Talent and experience are great, but coordination is one thing.

Not to sell short our coaches, but I'm still not sold on Heacock;

LSU burned us with; - Using their Tight Ends
- Exploiting our DT's
- Mis-direction
- Play Action

If you think they havent watched that game over and over your crazy.

One of these area's we know should be better from the get-go (DT)
But we can't creep up and bite on action, we need to stay at home and get solid pressure with a 4 man front, and for god sake watch over the middle with the TE use.

Somewhat agree. Heacock has produced some very good Ds in the last few years. The one glaring example is the lack of TE coverage in the last two NC games. Especially frustrating was in the Fla game when they could dump off to the short middle at will. I normally don't question good coaches, but when I can see an obvious problem, they should too. All he had to do was put a LB or safety 7 yards off the line and tell him to stay there. Instant INT. As far as the LSU rushing attack, wasn't much Heacock could do. LSU's team blocking was unreal.

I just want to see that killer instinct again. The '02 and '03 defenses (think Miami and KSU Fiesta Bowls) just had an unrelenting ferocity. Blitz, blitz, blitz at every opportunity, harrasing the QB and stuffing the run game. To my untrained football eye, compared to UF and LSU NC games, our defense couldn't have been more different from a strategic point of view.

I just wonder if this D coaching staff is comfortable with attacking style?
I've gotta agree with you here, ever since Dantonio left, we have become a defense that will sit in zone and try to force mistakes, but what won us a national championship was a defense that blitzed at every oppurtunitiy and fucked up the QB at every oppurtunity.

All comes down to the DL play. As 2007 LSU, 2007 New York Giants, and 2006 Florida have all shown us, championships are won along the dline.

He's had some good defenses for sure, but the last three losses we've had were very alarming. We didn't make adjustments. You mentioned the lack of TE coverage, and I also remember us playing a soft zone that allowed the other team to pick up 5-7 yards whenever they wanted.

Against Illinois, we spread our defense and put three guys on the d-line, then they proceeded to run right through the gaping holes that were there all night. I think I remember the Illinois TE doing some good, as well.. but I'm not certain on that.

I guess what I'm saying is that we've always had the talent to take risks, and Heacock hasn't really done that in the last two huge games we've played.

Of course, it won't matter what defense we play if we turn the ball over.

Well, in the first half of play, Florida scored 34 points on us. 2nd half, 7 points. I'd say that was a solid adjustment.

Against LSU, 24 points in first half and 14 in the 2nd half.

So adjustments aren't the largest issue; it seems to be consistency all across the board - but more specifically in the first 30 minutes of play.

USC will use their TE'S quite abit I believe, until sanchez gets comfortable playing as the full time starter.:)

They still moved the ball in the second half.. two 40+ yard drives, and a 39 yard drive that ended in a score. One of the 40+ yard drives ended in a turnover on downs that would've resulted in a field goal if they would've kicked it. Similar with LSU.. two drives over 50 yards, one was a 13 play, 80 yard drive.

We certainly played better in the second in both games, but the scoreboard doesn't tell the entire story. We didn't make enough adjustments to do what we needed to do to win the game. They still moved the ball. But the point I'm trying to make about adjustments isn't really even what matters. We've given up 38 and 41 points in our last two bowl games. We need to not be in the position that we need to make large adjustments. An opponent like USC, with or without experience, is going to be good enough to score if we're not on the top of our game.
