I just want to see that killer instinct again. The '02 and '03 defenses (think Miami and KSU Fiesta Bowls) just had an unrelenting ferocity. Blitz, blitz, blitz at every opportunity, harrasing the QB and stuffing the run game. To my untrained football eye, compared to UF and LSU NC games, our defense couldn't have been more different from a strategic point of view.

So did '05. I believe we led the country in sacks that year or at least were right up there.

An attacking D is also vulnerable to big plays and those are even more likely to occur if you have an inexperienced D which we had in '04, '06, and '07. Expect to see a much more aggressive D this year. Hell, it was aggressive last year. But it doesn't really matter how aggressive you are if your D-line isn't pushing the O-line back and your LB's sent on blitzes are getting picked up by RB's and TE's. Our personnel is much better this year though and that's the difference.

"Our personel is much better this year" ? Please explain how? I do see more experience. Is that what you mean?

He's had some good defenses for sure, but the last three losses we've had were very alarming. We didn't make adjustments. You mentioned the lack of TE coverage, and I also remember us playing a soft zone that allowed the other team to pick up 5-7 yards whenever they wanted.

Against Illinois, we spread our defense and put three guys on the d-line, then they proceeded to run right through the gaping holes that were there all night. I think I remember the Illinois TE doing some good, as well.. but I'm not certain on that.

I guess what I'm saying is that we've always had the talent to take risks, and Heacock hasn't really done that in the last two huge games we've played.

Of course, it won't matter what defense we play if we turn the ball over.

You rang? And Malcolm Jenkins still got burned deep for the TD. What's the point then?

I've gotta agree with you here, ever since Dantonio left, we have become a defense that will sit in zone and try to force mistakes, but what won us a national championship was a defense that blitzed at every oppurtunitiy and fucked up the QB at every oppurtunity.

All comes down to the DL play. As 2007 LSU, 2007 New York Giants, and 2006 Florida have all shown us, championships are won along the dline.

We simply haven't had the horses to play that style since, and may never again. That D-line was sick, Sick, SICK. Those teams didn't even have to actually blitz that much, the front four could get great penetration by themselves. In fact, if you look at the film from that year, some of the best pressure we got was when we had 8 drop in coverage and only rushed 3 lineman. When there was a blitz with that D, the extra man usually had a clear lane because of the double teaming by the O-line.
I think this year we have the ability to bring more pressure, if the coaches put more trust in the DBs to go straight up man to man. If we bring aggressive pass rushing, the DBs don't need to be perfect. They just need to contain the receivers and hope the rush can either get to the QB or force him to hurry his throw. LSU did a good job of this in the NC, although I question the legality of jamming receivers 10-15 yards downfield.

No dude. It really happened.
Really? We must have missed that game. :roll2: Pretty obvious that he thought the video would be a tad bit more useful than posting a screenshot of it.
