Game Thread Ohio State 3, Southern Cal 35 (Sept. 13)

Last season USC went to Lincoln and destroyed Nebraska. The media came all overe themselves with that, and then as the season unfolded we found out just how bad Nebraska really was (went on to give up 76 to Kansas, 65 to Colorado, 40 to frickin' Ball State, 41 to Missouri, and 45 to Oklahoma State. They gave up nearly 38 ppg for the whole season. And this year's Virginia could be even worse. So USC's ass-raping of Virginia really should be taken with a truck-load of salt...

One could make the argument that it was BECAUSE of the beating USC gave them, that they could never recover and turned about to be such a bad team. That is the caliber of team we are dealing with here after all.

with all the banter going on about UVA, we need to keep in mind that the Cavs were outgained 452-100 BY FREAKING WYOMING in their opener last year. this UVA team is so bad that Phil Steele picked them to finish dead last in the Coastal Division, BEHIND DUKE!

Laramie, Wyoming is a tough place to play. Not necessarily because the team is good (it really isn't) or the crowds are especially rowdy (they aren't) but because the elevation there is 7200 feet. The first couple of weeks I lived there I could not climb more than a flight of stairs without getting a little winded. And there is nothing you can do to prepare a team for that. I don't care how tough you think you are, you are a little less tough at that altitude (at least until you have lived and trained there for about a month).

Now that I have insulted one of my alma maters just a little I want to get this out:

Go Cowboys! Powder River, Let 'er Buck!

It must be the same when they travel down here, near sea level. I went to the Wyoming-tOSU game awhile back, and we crushed them and ate their souls.

There is no excuse for getting the crap kicked out of you by Wyoming. I don't care if the game's played in Antarctica. That was a pathetic showing by UVA.

Not actually. Training at a high altitude is an advantage when you compete at a low altitude. At high altitudes, your body creates extra red blood cells to compensate for the lower oxygen levels. When you come down to sea level and compete, you have an added advantage. That is why the US Olympic training center is in Colorado Springs.

(Edit: After rereading BUCKYLE'S comment I see that he meant his comment to be tongue in cheek, rendering my correction of him unwarranted)

Wyoming got pummeled by Ohio State because Ohio State is a superior football program BY FAR. Ohio State would have won even if the game had been in Laramie. I just wanted to point out that you lose a little off your step when you play there. And I did want to be able to talk a little Wyoming football, even if just for a moment .

On a tangent, I did meet a guy while I lived out there that played in that game (he was a TE). He told me the hardest hit he ever received in football was delivered to him by one Andy Katzenmoyer during that game. he described Andy as the most fearsome football player he ever saw in his life. He also said it was an honor and treat to play in Ohio Stadium...an experience he will never forget.

And I do want to make things clear: I am a Buckeye first and foremost. Make no mistake about that.

Go Bucks!

No doubt about that. If Wyoming beats you, you are not that good. But the altitude does tend take something out of you, especially over the course of a football game.

That Virginia team had to relace all 3 starters on their DL, 2 in the secondary, their entire interior OL and was breaking in a new QB. USC clearly outclassed them, but I'm not ready to label them as on par with their '03 or '04 teams or even the greatest team ever!!!!!!!!11!!!1!! '05 version. Petey left Sanchez in there late into the game (Can't say I blame him) and we all know he's not unaccustomed to running up the score. I didn't see anything to make me any more worried than before. I still say it's a 50/50 toss up being that it's on the road. Reports around Beanie are promising and I think TP is gonna provide a huge X-factor.

So what are the biggest non-Beanie, non-Pryor conclusions from the YSU game?

I would say it is that we still haven't figured out how to convert on 3rd and 3s and 4s on a consistent basis. The empty backfield look, especially if SC's defense is backed up inside the redzone, is going to kill us. I could see SC blitzing us from LBer and safety all day if we continue to do that. If it was up to me, I'd have Prior hand it off to Beanie from the Piston. And if we don't get it, we'll just QB sneak Prior, who is 6-6, has long arms and good ball control.

Enough with the OSU questions. How about you tell us what kind of roles Rojo and Damian Williams will play and how good the OTs are?
