Game Thread Ohio State 3, Southern Cal 35 (Sept. 13)

So you think the ACC is the best conference in the country?

I'm telling you not to under estimate the talent level there. Don't get caught up in the media hype about the SEC's talent and the lack of it in the Big Ten or the ACC. Those numbers don't lie. The ACC has produced 29 more players drafted in the first four rounds in the last four years than the Pac 10 has. That says something.
The poster you were replying to was correct in that you take USC out of the PAC 10 and those draft numbers for the PAC 10 are absolutely horrible. This isn't as true in the Big Ten or the ACC.
Wisconsin and Michigan has also produced a lot of draft picks. In the ACC it is relatively spread out with FSU and Miami leading the way.
In '09's first round there is an estimated 6 players from the PAC 10 going in the first round. 5 of them are from USC!
In the second round there should be about three players from the PAC 10 taken and 1 is from USC. So, in the first two rounds that makes 9 players with 6 coming from USC.
The Big 10 will produce an estimated 12 picks in the first two rounds with 6 coming from OSU. The talent is again going to be greater in '09 in the Big 10 and more spread out as well.
The ACC will again produce an estimated 12 picks in the first two rounds in '09.

Typically, Pete Carroll uses the first bye week to evaluate and acclimate the freshmen. Which freshmen will have an impact this season will be determined this week, as they will get a lot of reps. I think people are especially interested to see what TE Blake Ayles can do, as well as the frosh linemen and MLB Uona Kaveinga.

I haven't had a chance to watch the game yet, but from my endzone vantage point I think Sanchez needs to work on a few things. There were times when he stared down the receiver and times when he insisted on throwing into coverage when nobody was open. There also seems to be something wrong with Stafon Johnson; he just didn't look explosive.

Kurt or Thomps, I didn't watch USC-UVA as much as I wanted to...I know about USC but give me a rundown of UVA. Who would you compare them to talent-wise? If UVA played in the Pac-10, where would they fall? Big Ten?

Being a USC fan I hate to say this but UVA just wasnt very good, period. Theyve got some talent but their entire team looked intimidated, disorganized, and overwhelmed. Im oretty sure they would be in the bottom tier of both the Pac Ten and Big Ten if they played there. I hope they prove me wrong because it would do good for USC's SOS and Viriginia had pretty nice fans but their team just wasnt very good.

So a bye week before tOSU...after 1 game, what questions does USC have to answer before that game?

I think they will spend most of it getting their team mentally prepared to play such a good opponent so early in the season. I have a tough time believing that the SC players have yet to put the UVA victory behind them and realize that they are playing the best team they will see all year in Week 3. As such, I imagine most of the following weeks will be used by the USC coaches to hammer home two keys, namely execution and discipline.
I think the coaching staff will be watching the Ohio and Youngstown State games to see if there is anything in the Buckeye defense they match up well against or exploit, but I doubt they will spend that much time trying to come up with a totally new offensive or defensive scheme to test the Bucks.

A couple of SC player that I'm interested in: Rojo and Butch Lewis. Are the speed wideouts including Rojo and Arkansas transfer Damian Williams becoming the go-to guys in this offense to compensate for the lack of elite speed of the bigger WRs? And how solid of a player is Lewis at OT? A true sophomore starter from Colorado, is he ready for the big stage or still kinda learning the position?

no that youngstown state is a world beater, but UVA looked just pathetic Saturday

UVA's 3 man pass "rush" if you could even call it that was comedy, and half of the time it looked like their D was unorganized and out of position, I wonder if UVA fans are questioning Groh as it seems he didint have his team anywhere near prepared for that game

the whole team had the deer in the headlights look from the start and you could tell from the start that USC was going to run right through them

Uva is still a better test than Ohio and Youngstown State. Cupcakes.

I bet if you'd read the entire thread you'd have picked up the context.

No one was suggesting that USC should not have played UVA. People (mostly 2 USC fans) were saying that definitive conclusions can't be drawn from the game because of the Cavaliers immense suckitude.

As for suggestions that OSU should play a tougher schedule: If you think playing USC doesn't qualify, then I guess I have a higher opinion of the Trojans than you do.

My assessment of USC/UVA and USC/Ohio St.

Not sure which of you said it in this thread, but I took the same two things out of the USC/UVA game:

1. UVA is horrible.
2. USC is a lot better than I thought they would be. Offensively, they looked polished.

As for matching them up with Ohio State, I think the key is going to be the same thing it was in our losses to Florida and LSU in the NC games--how does our defense perform on third and medium? Ohio State rolls through the Big 10, dominating in these situations. Anytime a third and six comes up against PSU, Wisconsin, etc., you can pretty much bank on a win for our defense. That wasn't the case against LSU and Florida. They ate us alive. USC has the weapons to do similar things. To be fair, I don't think USC is going to be able to run the ball straight ahead at us and I don't think they can consistently beat us deep. But how well do we police the middle of the field? We have to be better than last year--significantly better.

Offensively, I'm worried. Without Beanie at 100%, we are a completely different team--much less two-dimensional. I love Saine and Boom as much as everybody else on here. But we immediately become a finesse team without Beanie. Without Beanie, I think Tress has no choice but to ask a lot more out of Pryor. That scares me. As good as he is, he is going to make mistakes and I think if we can just get a few designed keepers and short passes out of him, that's all we need. Take Beanie out of the picture and I think we have to ask Pryor to make big plays. Can he answer the bell? Maybe, but that's a lot to ask out of him right now.

It's gonna be a good one! Two heavyweights slugging it out. See you at the Colliseum!

How soon we forget that Beanie wasn't 100% last year.

He played through an ankle injury and a broke hand at one point.

With that he still put up 1600 yards, if there is any doubt on here - it should be on the number of yards he puts up because unless his leg is falling off, the man is going to play. It's just his attitude, if he can stand and run... he feels its nothing short of his duty to carry this ground attack.

Warrior in every sense of the word.

P.S.

while I did like Mandel's article on the Buckeyes pre-season... he apparently forget his med's again.
