C.J. Gable, shown here at the 2007 Rose Bowl, was hurt during practice Tuesday when he was tackled from behind while running the ball in a scrimmage drill.

USC's backfield, already in flux with quarterback Mark Sanchez coming back from a knee injury, sustained another blow Tuesday when running back C.J. Gable suffered hip and ankle injuries.
Gable, a redshirt sophomore who started the 2006 and 2007 openers, sustained a sprained left hip and ankle when he was tackled during a scrimmage drill.
"It was real awkward the way he hit the ground," Coach Pete Carroll said.
Gable lay on his back for several minutes before he was assisted off the field by team trainers. He was carted to the locker room and examined by team physician James Tibone.
"I think his hip is the worst part," said Tibone, who declined to comment about how long Gable might be sidelined.
Gable redshirted in 2007 after having abdominal surgery following the third game.
He was on crutches Tuesday when he emerged from the locker room.
"I don't feel like talking," Gable told reporters.

They must have been scrimmaging an SEC team.

Seriously, what's with all the bad karma for this team?

Who do they think they are, the Cleveland Browns?

It seems like they have been bit by the injury bug early this year, but it could be a lot worse from the sound of things. Mostly just dings and scratches.

Thought this was interesting. Apparently, USC's star FS Taylor Mays doesn't think much of his teams offense...

USC's Mays: Offense? We don't need no stinkin' offense!

LOS ANGELES -- USC free safety Taylor Mays is just like you. He doesn't know who USC's starting quarterback is going to be against Virginia. Unlike you, he doesn't much care.
He wants a reporter to know that this is USC-2008, and USC-2008 is about one thing: defense.
"The only time the offense has success is if we mess up," Mays said while negotiating the post-practice festival of autograph-seekers packing Howard Jones Field that is a staple of the USC experience.
"I don't think anybody really impresses me on our offense, but the offense is going to be alright. They've got a lot of athletes and a lot of great players, too. But I'm not going to give them any pub because we're a defensive football team."
